Description

T. DAVISON.
RAIL ANCHOR.
APPLICATION man NOV. 19, 1914.
1,136,777. Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
m I IIIIM UNITED STATES PATENT @FFTDE.
THOMAS DAVISON, OF BRANTFORD, ONTARIO, CANADA.
nAIL-ANoHon.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS DAVISON, a
subject of the King of Great. Britain, and
resident of Brantford, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Anchors, of which the following is the specification.
This invention, relates to improvements in rail anchors, and the objects of the invention are to provide a simple and effective form of device which may be clamped to rails having different sized-bases and will bear a uniform pressure against the ties to prevent slipping of the rails with respect thereto, and it consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawing.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inventionin position on the rail. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation- Fig. 3
is a perspective view of thebottom clamping member. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the side clamping member. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamping wedge.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a rail and B the tie.
C represents the bottom clamping member including a portion adapted to extend beneath the rail and a hook shaped portion 11 adapted to fit around the bottom flange of the rail as shown and formed with oral strengthening ribs 12.
14 represents an abutment flange formed on the bottom member and adapted to abut the side of thetie, strengthened with a transverse rib 15. The end of the bottom clamping member remote from thehook shaped portion 11 is formed with an abutperiphment flange l6 and a transverse recessed,
portion 17 adapted to'receive the clamping wedge D. p
The end clamping member E is of the form shown in Fig. 4 and is adapted to fit over the end of the member C and is formed with a recess 18 into which theend of the member C is a'daptedto extend, the member It being of substantially Ushape and adapted to fit around the end of the member C and being formed with sides 19 having slots 20 through which thegwedge D is adapted to extend. The member E is further formed Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 20, 1915. Application filed NovemberlS, 1914. Serial No. 873,078.
.with an abutment flange 22 adapted to engage with the side of the tie B and is re inforc'ed with a rib 23. a The wedge D is formed with a recess 24 adapted to engage the side 20. When driven asuflicient distance the upper side of the member E may be reinforced with ribs 25.
The member E when placed in position on the member G is adapted to engage theflange of the rails, the said flange fitting in themouth on the member E. The end of the member C extends through a throat in the recess 18 against the rear wall of the member E. g
In use the bottom clamping member C is placed on the rail adjacent to the tie. The member E is fitted over the end and the wedge D driven in, connecting the two members. When the wedge has been driven in a sufficient distance the side 20 will catch in the recess 24. The wedge D may be removed by a blow from a sledge in the reverse direction.
It will be seen that by usin different sizes of wedges the devicemay e attached to rails having different sized'bases.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my inven- .tion, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all mat ter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative" and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A rail anchor comprising a bottom member-formed on one end with a hook shaped portion adapted to embrace the flange of the rail and being formed on the opposite side with an abutment flange, an
the side of the rail, said hook shaped portion having peripheral reinforcing flanges and being formed on one end with an abutment flange and on the bottom with an abutment flange having a reinforcing rib, an end clamping member fitting over the end of the bottom clamping member formed with a portion adapted to embrace the end of the rail, formed with slots to receive a wedge and formed on the underside with an abutment flange having a reinforcing rib, and a wedge adapted to extend through 10 the said slot and formed with a recess in which a portion of the end clamping memberis adapted to engage. v
