Be it known that I, DANIEL W. Snmma citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and. State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Com uting-Ma- V chines or the-like, of which the ollowing is a description. K
My invention belongs to that class of machines or devices which are controlled by keys or their equivalent, such 'as, for example, a computing machine or the like in which movable keys control the setting up mechanisms which in their turn control the operation of the printing or recording and computing mechanisms or either of them. In such machines the printing and computing mechanisms are generally actuated by the operation of a hand lever or equivalent means which is either given a partial or en-,
applicable to any machine or construction however, whereln one or more movable keys are employed and 1t 1s deslred or required to have an intermittent movement of a certain part of the mechanism or machine.
My invention pertains particularly to a construction in.which the operating mechanism is controlled by the operation of the controlling keys of the machine. In the maand more particularly-pointed out in the chine shown in the drawings, only a portion of the computing machine being shown, the

Any equivalent arrangement may be employed to accomplish the same result. Any suitable means may be employed to revent the parts 6 and 7 of the key shown rom separating, a simple arrangement being a pin 9 through the stem 6 cooperating with a slot 10in part 7 permitting the required movement of the two relative to each other but preventing separation.
In the preferred construction the driving mechanism or member comprises a continuously rotatin or driving'shaft 5, or the equivalent, w ich is operatively connected by suitable means, includin clutch mechanism, or the equivalent, whlch is controlled by the secondary movement mentioned of any of the keys. The preferred clutch mechanism shown comprises parts 12 and 13 loosely arranged or supported on asuitable pinor shaft 14. Clutch part 12.is provided with the usual form of gear teeth, which mesh with the gear 11 secured to the driving shaft 5, which shaft may be driven by a motor (not shown) or any equivalent source of power so that the part is driven and continuously rotates with the shaft. The part 13 of'the clutch is connected by means of. a bar 15'or the equivalent to a crank arm 17 secured to the shaft 4, the bar 15 being pivotallysecured at points 16 and 18 to the clutch part and to the arms 17 respectively. The arm 17 is rigidly secured to the shaft 4 by meansof a pin 19 or its equivalent. To substantially connect parts 12 and 13 of the clutch to operate the shaft 4 as desired, a pawl 20 or its equivalent is provided and eccentrically mounted upon operated or controlled the setting up mecha member 13 in a recess 21, the pawl 20 being provided with a friction face 22 adapted to engage the face 23 on part 12. A resilient member 24 or its equivalent tends normally to force the pawl into engagement with. the
face 23 of part 12. As shown the pawl is preferably extended as at 25 to engage a stop'or detent for the pawl 28 is preferably provided with an arm 30 rigidly secured to arm 28 so that the two form substantially a bell crank. Normally the stop or detent 28 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 showing its position when the awl is re-' leased to permit or cause the operation of g shaft 4. This form of clutch mechanism and stop is particularly adapted for use in machines of the kind'mentioned, as the stop not only operates the clutch mechanism, but also substantially locks the parts or prevents rotation of the driven -member and operating shaft 4 when the pawl releases the part 13.
To operate or withdraw the stop 28 as required or desired, thereby releasing the pawl, I preferably provide an auxiliary arm or bar 31 carried by the arms 32 and 33, the bar being preferably ivotally secured thereto at points 34 an 35 respectively. The arm 32 is rigidly secured to a shaft 36, and provided with a bell crank arm 37 and the arm 33 is pivotally secured at 38 and provided with an arm 39, the two forming substantiallya bell crank33-39. The arms 37-39 are preferably connected by a bar 40 pivotally secured thereto at points 41 and 42 respectively. An arm 43 corresponding to arm 37 is also preferably secured to shaft- 36 on the opposite side of the machine and an arm 44 corresponding to 39 pivotally secured to the frame (see Fig. 2), the'two being connected by t bar '45 substantially similar to bar 40 and the arms 40 and 45 are connected by means of the connecting bar 46. On bar 31 (see Figs. 1 and3) is provided a pin 53 or the equivalent which cooperating with arm 30 controls the stop 28 when bar 31 is moved in 'a manner hereinafter described. A resilient member 54secured to the frame at 55 and to the detent or ment to accomplish the desired result may be employed. This forces down the adjacent bar 48 and consequently depresses the arms 47 and bar 46 partially rotating shaft 36 and moving the arms 32 and 33, consequently throwing bar31 so that the pin 53 moves the bell crank 28-30 whereby the detent or stop 28 releases the pawl 21. The resilient member 24 .and driving force of the part 12 force the pawl into driving engagement with the part '12 so that the part 13 is frictionally driven by the part 12, until the same makes a complete rotation and the pawl is again engaged by thedetent or stop 28. eThis movement gives shaft 4 a partial rotation thus operating the printing or. recording mechanism of the'machine'shown. In a device of the kind described and in combination, operating. mechanism, a series of controlling keys, driving mechanism for said operating mechanism normally out of engagement therewith, and means co-= operating with one or more of sa dpontrolling keys for throwing said driving and operating mechanisms into engagement, said means including a friction clutch comprising a rotatable driving member provided with an annular concentric engaging surface, a driven member rotatable concentrically therewith, and an engaging member pivot-v ally supported at one end by said driven member and eccentrically disposed thereon, said engaging member arranged to engage said engaging face but projectmg beyond the same, and a removable stop for said engaging member controlled by one or more of said keys and normally arranged in the path of the projected end of said engaging member in opposition to its'linev of travel and means for operatively connecting said driven member with the operating mechanism.

Ina computing machine or the like, and in combination, a series of controlling keys, operating mechanism, driving mechanism therefor normally out of engagement therewith, and means for throwing said driving and operating mechanisms into engagement, said means'including a friction clutch comprising a rotatable driving member provided with an annular concentric engaging surface', a driven member,rotatable concentrically"therewith, and an engaging member pivotally supported at one end thereof by said drivenmember and eccen tricallydisposed thereon, said engaging member arranged to normally engage said engaging surface but projecting beyond the same, a removable stop for said engaging member normally arranged in the path of the projected end of said engaging mem Lil-$5 .8

In a computing machine or the like, and in combination, a series of controlling keys, 0 crating mechanism, driving mechanism t erefornormally out of engagement therewith, and means for throwing said driving and operating mechanisms into engagement, said means including a friction clutch comprising a rotatable driving member provided with an annular concentric engaging surface, a driven member rotatable concentrically, ,therewith, and an engaging member Eivotally supported at one end thereof y said driven member and eccentrically disposed thereon, said engaging member arranged to normally engage said engaging surface, but projecting beyond the same, and a removable stop for said engaging member normally arranged in the path of the projected end of said,
engaging member in opposition to its line of travel, controlling means governed by the movement of the keys for said stop, and means for operatively connecting said driven member with the operating mechanism.

In a computing machine or the like of the kind described and in combination a series of controlling keys, operatin mechanism, driving mechanism there or, and means arranged therebetween for operatively connecting thesame, said means including a clutch comprising a rotatable driving art, a driven part and an engaging mem er arranged to operatively connect said parts, controlling means for said engaging member operatively connected with the keys and arranged to'prevent rotation of said driven part when the parts are out of engagement, and means for operatively means for operatively connecting said driven part and said operating mechanism. 10. In a computing machine or the like and in combination, a series of controlling keys, operating mechanism, driving mechanism therefor normally out of engagement therewith including a clutch comprising a driving part and a driven part, said driven part'operatively connectedwith said operat ing mechanism, means for substantially throwing saiddriving and, driven parts into engagement orv preventing the engagement thereof, said means comprising an engaging member carried by one of said, parts .arranged to engage the opposlte part, means' tending to force the same into engagement, means fornormally preventing the engagement of said parts and means governed by the movement. of the keys for controlling said stop. i

In a computmg machine or the'like and in combination,a series of controlling keys, operating mechanism, driving mecha-" nism therefor normally out of engagement therewith includinga clutch comprising a driving part and a driven part, said driven part operatively connected with said operatmg mechanism, means for substantially throwing said driving, and driven parts into engagement or preventing the engagement thereof, said means comprislng an engaging -member carried by one of said parts arranged to engage the opposite part, means tending to force the same into engagement,
means for normally preventing the engagement of said parts and locking said driven part in an inoperative position comprising a detent. or said engaging member arranged in the path ,thereof in opposition to its line of travel and means operativelyjassoc'iated with the keys for controlling said detent.
12. In a machine of the character described, the' combination of a plurality of 'controllin keys having an-engaging part,
an elonga ed longitudinally extendin varm or bar adapted to be engaged by sai part in its movement, an'auxiliary elongated longitudinally extending arm or bar, a bell crank lever operatively connected at opposite ends to said arms and ivotally supported intermediate its en s whereby a movement of one arm imparts a movement to the other, operating mechanism, a driven member, a drive interposed between the two, and means governed by the movement of the auxiliary arm to operate the drive.-

In ;a machine of the character described, the combination of a plurality of controlling keys, an elongated longitudinally extending arm or baradapted to be engaged by said keys-in their movement, an auxiliary elongated longitudinally extending arm or bar, a bell crank lever o eratively connected at opposite ends to sai arms and pivotally supported intermediate its ends w ereb a vertical movement of one arm imparts a ongitudinal movement to the other,'operating mechanism, a drive'mmember, a clutch interposed between the two, and means governed by the movementof the auxiliary arm to operate the clutch.

In a machine ofthe character described, the combination of a plurality of controlling keys having an engaging part, an elongated longitudinally extending arm or bar adapted to be engaged by said part in its movement, an auxiliary elongated longitudinally extending arm or bar, a pivotal connection between said arms whereby a movement of one imparts a movement to the other, operating mechanism, a driven member, a releasable clutch connection between the opera-ting mechanism and driven members, and .means operatively connected with the-aux liary arm to release the clutch connection between the operating mechanism operating mechanism, a driven member, a 'clutch interposed between the operating only a er the mechanismand 'driven member comprising ccooperatingnnemberswith means for maintaining theinf in-relative locking connection, and means operatively connected with the elongated arm to release the clutch members.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a plurality ofcontrolling keys having an engaging part, an elongated longitudinally extending arm or bar adapted to be engaged by said part in its movement, an auxiliary elongated loning cooperating members with means forgitudinally extending arm or bar, a bell crank lever operatively connected at opposite ends to said arms and pivotally supported intermediate its ends whereby a movement of one imparts a movement to the other, operating mechanism, a driven member, a clutch interposed between the operating mechanism and driven member comprisor bar adapted to be engaged by said part in its movement, an auxiliary elongated 1on- -gitudinally extending armor bar, a bell crankj lever operatively connected at oppositen'ds to said arm and pivotally supportedintermediate its ends whereby a movement of one imparts a movement to the other, operating mechanism, a driven member, a clutch interposed between the operating mechanism and driven member comprising concentrically arranged rotary members one of which being operatively connected with the operating mechanism and the other with thedriven member, a releasable locking dog interposed between the clutch members,
