AUTOMATIC SLED-BRAKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Aims PLATZEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Sled- Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sled brakes, and pertains especially to an automatic brake mechanism for sleds or sleighs composed of front and rear runners or sled portions.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple brake mechanism for sleighs and sleds of such novel and peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as to be automatically operated by the draft of the sleigh or sled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a brake wheel of novel and peculiar construction, and to furnish a special hanger for said wheel, and means for connecting the hanger with the draft appliance of the sled.
A still further object of the invention is to provide the brake wheel with a special spring connection permitting the wheel to be given thrust movement into braking position when released by the draft connected device.
Various other objects, advantages and improved results will be found in the practical use and application of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application :Figure 1 is a top view of a sled showing the application of the invention, with the tongue partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view, partly broken away, showing the wheel in braked position, the wheel being shown raised in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side elevation of the wheel and its hanger. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the wheel hanger.
The same reference characters denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The sled frame consists of front and rear bolsters 1 and 2 respectively connected by side frame pieces 3. The front runners 4 are attached to the bolster 1, and the rear runners 5 are secured to the rear bolster 2. The front and rear runners are provided respectively with brace bars 6 and 7. The tongue 7 is attached to the front bar 6 in Specification of Letters latent.

the usual manner, and has a double tree 8 provided with single trees 9.
A coupling pole or reach bar 10 connects the rear bar 7 with the front bolster 1 by means of a hook and link connection 11, so as to permit independent lateral movement of the front and rear runners, and the said front bar 6 is provided with a rod 12 slidable through a sleeve 13 secured to the bar 6, and having a ring 14 at one end and a hook 15 at the other end, the purpose of said rod will be hereinafter fully explained.
The rear bolster 2 is provided with a pair of lugs or ears 16, provided with a pivot rod 17 upon which is pivotally hung a bracket or wheel hanger 18 composed of a pair of angular plates 19 secured together at 20 so as to form forked ends 22 and 23. The forked end 22 of the hanger is pivoted on the rod 17 and a brake wheel 24 is journaled in the forked end 23 of the hanger. The wheel 24 has a portion of its periphery removed so as to form a flat straight face 25, from one end of which face a plurality of prongs, spurs or teeth 26 extend and project from a portion of the periphery of the wheel. One end of a spiral spring 27 is attached to the other end of said face 25, and the other end of the spring is attached to the pivot rod 17 so as to thrust the wheel when the wheel is released as will now be explained. The forked end 23 of the hanger has one end of a cable or chain 28 attached thereto, and said cable or chain extends over a sheave or pulley 29 on the bar 7 and the other end of the chain is hooked to the ring 14, at various lengths desired by means of a chain grabhook 30. The chain may be disconnected with the rod ring 14 and temporarily held by a hook 1 on the front bar 6.
The hook 15 is connected with the double tree so as to have the draft or pull of a horse or pair of horses on the double tree slide the rod and thereby operate the chain which in turn raises the wheel, out of braking po sition.
It will be seen that during the draft or forward movement of the sled the chain will hold the wheel out of braking position, but when the draft or pull of the horses ceases the chain becomes slack and the spiral spring automatically forces or thrusts the wheel into braking position.
Obviously the unbraked position of the wheel places the flat face 25 in position so that there no teeth in position to interferewith a load or passengers upon the sled,

1.'In a sled brake, a brake wheel having peripheral spurs, means for pivotalliy hangingthe wheel, and a spiral spring attached to the wheel: soas toipermitia partial turn of the wheel forwardly'in a braking operation.
2. The combination. with a sled having front and rear runners, and: a draft appliance, of' a thrust brake wheel, a double forked Wheel hanger, a spring connected with thewheel, and means connecting the wheel with the draft appliance for raising the wheel out of braking position.
3'. The combination with a sled having a pair of. front runners and pair of rear runners, a draft appliance, and front and rear bars connecting the respective. runners of said palrs, a shdable rod mounted on the front bar, and asheave mounted on'the rear bar in alinernent with said rod, of a spur wheel, a pivoted hanger in which the wheel for thrusting thewheel into braking position, and achain r ding on the sheave and connecting the said rod with; the hanger.
