To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gnoner. P. WIGGIN- 'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders or Loose-Sheet Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in temporary binders or loose sheet holders.
My present improvements relate particularly to the adjusting mechanism.
I have especially designed my improvements for embodiment in temporary binders or loose sheet holders of the type shown in U. S. Letters Patent to Bushong, No. 851,276, issued Apr. 23, 1907. My improvements may, however, be readily adapted to binders considerably modified in general structure.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide in a temporary binder or loose sheet holder an improved adjusting mechanism by means of which the binder may be quickly adjusted to permit the insertion or removal of sheets or leaves or to secure the sheets within the binder. Second, to provide an improved temporary binder or loose sheet holder in which the binding strips may be released so that they may be quickly extended to their full length and' also quickly retracted. Third, to provide a temporary binder or loose sheet holder hav ing these advantages which is simple and convenient in operation.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:

In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawings, the covers are designated generally by the numerals 1 and 2. These covers preferably consist of rectangular frames 3 having inner walls 4: and outer walls 5 secured thereto to provide chambers within the covers.
The structure illustrated is provided with clamping or binding bars 6 pivotally mounted on the hinge members 7 projecting from the inner ends of the covers. These binding bars are illustrated and described in detail in the Bushong patent referred to.
Binding strips 9 are connected with the cover 2 at 10 and telescoped into the cover 1. The binding strips are provided with a cross piece 11 having a finger piece 12 disposed through a longitudinal slot 13 in the inner wall of the cover 1. This finger piece is adapted to be folded or collapsed and is shown in its folded position in the drawing. As its details form no part of my present invention I do not illustrate the same herein.
The binding strips are releasably secured to means for tightening and when disengaged or released from this tightening means the covers may be pulled apart freely or the binding strips retracted by means of the finger piece 12. This adjusting means in the embodiment shown in Fig. I consists of the actuating shaft 14: supported by the bearing plates 15 mounted on the inner edges of the side members of the cover frame, see Fig. I.
The shaft 14 is provided with a pinion 16 meshing with a rack member 17 which is supported for longitudinal movement. The
rack member is provided with upwardly projecting flanges 18 slotted at 19 to receive the shaft 14. The binding strip securing rod 20 is journaled in the flanges 18 of the rack member and extends transversely of the cover, the ends of the rod being supported in slots 21 in the bearing plates 15, see Figs. I and IV.
'Longitudinal movement of the rod 20 is prevented by the collars 22 engaging the flanges 18 of the rack member, see Fig. III.
The binding strip securing members or slides 23 are provided with upwardly projecting arms 2a through which the rod 20 is arranged, the securing or slide members i being supported against lateral movement on the rod by the collars 25. The rod is provided with clamping cams or eccentrics 26 between the arms of the securing members 23.
I preferably provide clamping plates 27 which are disposed between the clamping cams or eccentrics of the rod 20 and the binding strips, as shown in Fig. V. These clamping plates have lugs 28 at their ends which engage the arms 24, thereby retaining the clamping plates in position. By turning the rod 20 the bindingstrips are secured to or released from the adjustable rack member and, as stated, when released may be freely adjusted relative to the rack member. The binding strips are released merely by the turning of the securing rod 20. In retracting them they are preferably drawn up by means of the finger piece 12, the rod turned to secure them and they are then further tightened by means of the actuating shaft 1 1-, which acts on the'rack as described.
The shaft 14 is locked in its adjusted position by means of the stop wheel 29 which coacts with a stop pin 30 on one of the bearing plates 15. The shaft 1% is supported for limited longitudinal movement to permit the engaging and disengaging of these stops.
The spring 31 is mounted on the shaft to hold the stops normally in engagement. This spring rests against the rack member and engages the collar 32 on the shaft, see Fig. I.
The shaft and the securing rod are both preferably arranged to be operated by means of a key from the outside of the cover, which is slotted at 33 to receive the key. This provides an adjusting means which is capable of very rapid manipulation.
I have not attempted to illustrate or describe the various modifications which I contemplate, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired. I desire, however, to be understood as claiming my improvements specifically in the form illustrated as well as broadly within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, one of said covers having a chamber therein, of binding strips eX- tending between the covers, a pinion shaft arranged transversely within said chambered cover, bearing plates for said shaft, a rack member having flanges slotted to receive said pinion shaft, a pinion arranged on said pinion shaft between the flanges of said rack member to coact therewith, a securing shaft having hearings in said flanges of said rack member, said bearing plates being slotted to receive the ends of said securing rod, and binding strip securing members mounted on said securing rod.
2. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, one of said covers having a chamber therein provided with an inner wall having a longitudinal slot therein, of binding strips extending between the covers, a cross bar for said binding strips arranged within said cover chamber and '-tending between the covers, a pinion shaft mounted on one of said covers, an adjustable rack member .to which said binding strips are connected, a pinion arranged on said pinion shaft to coact with said rack member, a toothed stop wheel on said pinion shaft, a coa'cting stop, said pinion shaft being supported for longitudinal movement, whereby said steps may be engaged and: disengaged, and a spring acting on said shaft to engage said stops.
4. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips eX- tending between the covers, a pinion shaft mounted: on one of said covers, an adjustable rack member to which said binding strips are connected, a pinion arranged on said pinion shaft to coact with said rack member, stops to prevent rotation of said shaft, and a spring acting on said shaft to cause said stops to engage, said shaft being adapted to be actuated from the outside of the cover to disengage said stops and rotate the shaft by means of a key.
5. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips exll ii tending between the covers, an adjusting member to whichv said binding strips are connected provided with a rack, a shaft arranged transversely of the rack for rotative and longitudinal adjustment, and stops to prevent rotation of said shaft adapted to be engaged and disengaged by the longitudinal movement of the shaft.
In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips extending between the covers, an adjustable rack member, a pinion arranged to coact with said rack member, a cam rod having bearings on said rack member, and binding strip clamp members having arms through which said rod is arranged, said rod being provided with cams between said arms.
In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips 6X- tending between the covers, a cam rod, binding strip clamp members having arms through which said rod is arranged, said rod being provided with cams between said arms, binding strip clamping plates arranged between the arms of said clamping members and having retaining lugs engaging the same, whereby the clamping plates are laterally supported, a rack provided with bearings for said rod, and a pinion for adjusting said rack.
8. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips extending between the covers, an adjusting means for said binding strips comprising a cam rod, binding strip clamp members having arms through which said rod is arranged, said rod being provided with cams between said arms, binding strip clamping plates arranged between the arms of said clamping members and having retaining lugs engaging the same whereby the clamping plates are laterally supported, said binding strips being disposed between the clamping members and clamping plates, and means for laterally adjusting said rod.
9. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips extending between the covers, an adjusting means for said binding strips comprising a cam rod, binding strip clamp members having arms through which said rod is arranged, said rod being provided with cams between said arms, and means for laterally adjusting said rod.
10. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, a binding strip extending between the covers, an adjustable rack member, a pinion mounted on one of said covers to coact with said rack member whereby said rack member is adjusted by the rotation of the pinion, a securing rod carried by said rack member, and securing members carried by said rod and coacting therewith to adjustably connect the binding strips to the rack member.
11. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips extending between the covers, an adjustable rack member, a pinion arranged to coact with said rack member, a cam rod having bearings on said rack member, and binding strip clamp members coacting with and movable with said rod.
12. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips extending between the covers, a securing rod, binding strip clamp members carried by said rod, a rack connected to said rod, and a pinion for adjusting said rack whereby said rod is laterally adjusted.
13. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of a binding strip extending between the covers, an adjustable rack member mounted on one of the covers for longitudinal adjustment, a pinion mounted on said cover to coact with said rack member whereby the rack member is adjusted by the rotation of said pinion, a looking means for said pinion, and means to clamp said binding strip to said rack member, said binding strip being freely adjustable relative to said rack member when said clamp means is released.
14. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of a binding strip eX- tending' between the covers, an adjustable rack member mounted on one of the covers for longitudinal movement, a pinion mounted on such cover to coact with said rack member, and means for connecting said binding strip to said rack member, said binding strip being freely adjustable relative to said rack member when said connecting means therefor is released.
15. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips extending between the covers, a pinion carried by one of the covers, an adjustable member to which said binding strips are adjustably connected by a clamp means, said adjustable member being provided with a rack meshing with said pinion, the aXis of said pinion being disposed transversely of the cover whereby, when the pinion is rotated the adjusting member is moved longitudinally of the cover to retract or extend the binding cords, and means for locking the pinion.
16. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of a binding strip eX- tending between the covers, a pinion carried by one of the covers, an adjustable rack coacting with said pinion, means for adjustably connecting said binding strip to said rack, and means for locking said pinion.
17. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of a binding strip extending between the covers, a pinion carried by one of the covers, an adjusting means for said binding strip comprising a rack coacting with said pinion, said binding strip being connected to said rac and means for locking said pinion.
18. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of a binding strip extending between'the covers, an adjustable rack member, means carried by said rack member for adjustably securing the binding strip thereto, and a pinion for adjusting said rack member mounted on one of said covers.
19. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of a binding strip extending between the covers, an adjustable rack member to which the binding strip is connected, and a pinion for adjusting said rack member mounted on one of said covers.
20. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips eX- tending between the covers, a cam rod arranged transversely of the covers, binding strip clamp members movable and connecting with said rod, and means for adjusting said rod laterally.
21. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips extending between the covers, a securing rod arranged transversely of the covers, binding strip securmg members on said rod,.means binding strips.
22. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers,of binding strips eX- tending between the covers, a binding strip clamping rod arranged transversely of the covers, clamping members movable with said rod and ooacting therewith to clamp the binding strips, and a rack and pinion for laterally adjusting said clamping rod, all coacting for the purpose specified.
23. In a temporary binder, the combination with the covers, of binding strips extending between the covers, a binding strip clamping rod arranged transversely of the covers, clamping members coacting with said rod to secure said binding strips, and means for laterally adjusting said rod, all coacting for the purpose specified.
