T0 all'whom iamay con-cern Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. WooD- ward, America, and residing at No. 577 St. Joseph street Lachine Province of uebec, Do-` minion f Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Fillers, of which the following is a specifition.
The invention toA be hereinafter described relates to shoe fillers.
he main objects of the invention are to providea marketable,` transportable filler economical in` its' production and use and will have the following qualities; permanent pliability, proofnesls, elasticity, resiliency, softness and workability, strongly adherent to leather whether wet or dry, tenacious, low melting, quickY cooling, non -shifting.
At present there are two classes of fillers on th market-rubber cement fillers, and ground cork fillers. .Neither of these adeuately meets-the demands.V The first is dangerous from fire and is wasteful and expensive because of evaporation, While thel second requires a long time t0 set, involving long and expensive delays in the other stepsof manufacture. To fully and adequately meet all of the requirements hereinfore enumerated the present filler has been invented.
It comprises `the ingredients hereinafter` stated', and mixed substantially in the manner and proportions set forth in the followf tion. Preferably, what will be hereinafter termed the compound, is first made.V This compound, which also performs the function of a binder, isthen mixed with a base of ground or granulated cork, sawdust, leather dust, orany suitable substance of like nature.
The preparation of the above filler is as follows 240 lbs. of resin is heated to the melting point in'a steam jacket kettle or other While it is in a hot iuid state 240 lbs. petrole-um wax or wax tailings is put in, melted, andmixed. To this hot fluid lbs. of bircarbonate of soda which is stirred in until thoroughly hot Huid mass is mixed market as red engine oil. The o il acts on Specification of Letters Patent. Application tiled August 8, 1913. Serial No. 783,795.

the resin to destroy all tendency to .brittlemass cools and the wax greatly'increases the flexibility of the resulting mixture or compound. This final compound is soft, semi-plastic, flexible, resi lient`v elastic, non-brittle,
workable, low melting, quick cooling, and
described is stirred the base material in the proportion of 25 lbs. of base to 6 gals. of compound.4 This completes 'the filler. When allowed to coo] it is ready for use. if desired, it may be put covering the outside of each loaf with a layer of the .base material in well known manner, or it may be put up in barrels or boxes. A filler thus prepared is practically non-infiammable.
`The vheated compound and consequently, the filler containing it, gives ofi a nonin flammabley gas, thus substantially preventing combustion of the filler.
ated, this filler has the additional qualities of noninlammableness and 'smoothness and when being molded into.
specificallyY meniip in loaf form Aby above named are common simi lar properpliable, waterproof, stable, tough, tenacious, adhesive, readily.
l Thus, in atldition to the qualities previously enumer tiolned. Many of these are well known on the market and would readily occur to any one Skilled in the art to which this invention relates. Therefore, they need .not be Set forth here. f
Having fully set forth and described my invention, what I claim and desire to protectby Letters Patent of the United States.
1. A permanently tenacious, quiclcsetting, permanently elastic; non-inflammable' shoe ifiller capable'of being molded into a thin pliable layer filling the shoe bottom, said Y fil er comprising, wax tailings, resin, petroleum oil, a comminuted resilient solid ma- B g terial and a substance which when combined :with said ingredients'and heated, gives o a non-inflammable gas. .4
f "L 2. A -shoe filler consisting of Wax tail- 'zklgs, resin, petroleum oil, a substance which iii-e osi non-inflammable saseuPOn heating of lthe filler, and a connuinuted resilient solid material.
ings, resin, petroleum oil` bi-carbonate of soda, and a" coml'initpd resilient solid ma- `terial.
