To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HAAKON A. lVLARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton. in the county of Montgomery and State or. Ohio. have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Alarm and Lock-Control for Cash-Registers, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and. exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in cash registers of the type having a plurality of drawers released by operations of the machine and. having independent alarms of dill'cront tones arranged so that when a drawer is opened its alarm will be sounded.
()ne object of this invention is to provide simple and effective interlocking devices between the cash drawers and the drawer controlling mechanism for preventing, when desired, successive operations involving the same drawer while the drawer remains open, but at the same time permitting operations ing other drawers. In the following description this interlocking mechanism is spoken of as the key lock mechanism, owing to the fact that the effect of its operation is to prevent depressing the key corresponding to" a particular drawer while the drawer remains open.
Another object is to provide a simple means for disabling. the key lock mechanism when it is desired to make successive operations involving the same drawer with the drawer open.
Still another object is to provide a single lock controlled device which may be adjusted to various positions to disable the key lock mechanism onlyor to simultaneously disable both the key lock mechanism and the alarm sounding mechanism.
l Vith these and incidental objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the improvement assembled in position. Fig. 2 is a rear view'showlng the drawer releasing mechanism and the related parts of the improvement. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of a part of the key lock controlling devices. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the drawer releasing mechanism showing the construction and application of the improvement. Fig.5 is an enlarged detail showing a section of the improvement. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the bell hammers and mechanism associated therewith. I
The invention is shown embodied in a register of the general type disclosed iii United States Letters Patent No. 616,866, granted December 27th, 1898,;to W. F. Bockhoii. Only two drawers and two'initial keys are shown. Instead of the differential mechanism controlling the posi tioning of the drawer releasing mechanism as shown in the Bockhofi patent the present construction has mechanism between the keys and the drawer releasing element proper whereby pressing one of the keys in will positively position the common drawer releasing element so that when the register is operated the drawer represented by the key pressed will be opened. This'positive mechanism is shown anddescribed in the pending application No. 665,086 filed by E. J. Von Pein, December 11th, 1911. The register also contains drawer latching mechanism, latch tripping devices, bell sounding devices and bell muffler mechanism disclosed in U nited States Letters Patent No. 745,937, to E. J. Von Pein, dated Jan. 5, 1901. Reference may be had to the patents and application mentioned .for a complete description of the illustrative machine.
The improvement made by this invention to the previous mechanism consistsmainly in providing an improved key lock mechanism by which successiveoperations of the machine involving the same drawer may be prevented without interfering with operations of the register to make entries involvin g the other drawer. A controlling device is provided whereby this key lock mechanism may be disabled when it is desired to op-f erate the. register repeatedly with the drawers open. The bell muffler mechanism described in the Von Pein patent has a device for disabling the bell sounding devices and part of the present invention consists in combining in one. lock controlled manipulative devlce means for disabling the key lock only or simultaneously disabling I both the key lock and the bell ringing mechshown in the accompanying drawings. This bank contains two initial keys 1 and 2 ar ranged to be pressed in against the tension of their springs and locked in the depressed position by the detent 3 and the retaining bar l in a manner fully explained in the Bockhoif patent. Each of the keys carries a pin 5 for holding the spring in position and extending at right angles to the shaft of the key into the path of one or the other of the slides 6 and 7'. These slides are provided with slots at their ends, the upper slots spanning a stub shaft 8 fastened in the key bank frame while the lower slots span the shaft 9 running through the frames of the machine. The slots are so arranged that the slides are allowed a certain extent of longitudinal mo vement. The slides are connected by'links 10 and 11 to arms 12 and 13 secured to a rock shaft 14. It will be seen that when .a key 1 is pressed in the shaft 14:
. will be rocked anti-clockwise and the slide projections 19. Depressing the keys 1 and 2 in succession will, through the mechanism just described, turn the rod 17 first in one direction and then the other thus bringing the projections 19 alternately under their corresponding leversQO. Each drawer sprovided with a spring operated latch 21 which engages. a latch-plate 2'2 fastened to the machine frame and holds'the drawer closed and for each latch there is one of the levers 20. These levers are pivoted as at 23 to one of the frames of the a machine with one end extending above the rear end of the latch 21 and the other ar- .ranged to be engaged by the corresponding projection 19 on the operating arm when the rod 17 is raised. The mechanism for lifting the rod 17 comprises a lever 27 (Fig. 2) pivoted at 28 and extending across the rear of the machine under a collar 24 fastened to the rod 17, a pitman 29 and a cam 31 fastened to the shaft 30. The upper end of the pitman has a hook shaped extension engaging the shaft 30, which is one of the main driving shafts of the register and given a complete rotation on every operation of the machiiie, while. the lower end of the pitman engages and supports the free end of the lever 27. A stud at the upper end of the pitman rides on the face of the cam 31 so that every time the register is operated and the shaft 30 rotated the pitman is lifted and the end to which it is attached to the lever '27 is raised. .As stated before, the collar 2-! under whi i the lever passes is secured to the rod 17 when the lever 27 is raised as just des i' ed the rod is lifted and the spring '35 compressed between the collar 2% and the, bracket 26. This causes which ever projection 19 is at the time positioned under one of the levers 20 to turn such lever on'it's pivot and disengage the corresponding catch 21 from the plate 32. The drawer is then free to be ejected by a spring 6-3 or opened in any other manner desired. This mechanism also operates the bell ringing mechanism. For each of the bells 33 there. is provided-a hell hammer 3i pivoted at with an extension 36 to engage the stop stud 37. The hammer is alwia s under the tension of the spring 38. Pivoted at -10 to the lever 20 is a pawl. 39 having an extension at the upper end engaging a corresponding extension on the hell hammer. A spring ll at all times.

The key lock mechanism of this inven' tion consists of a device for each drawer which automatically pushes the arm 18 out of engagement with. the lever 20 as soon as the drawer is opened, and then prevents the arm 18 from being again brought into operative relation with the same lever 20 until the drawer is closed. 1 lVhen the arm 18 is swung and held in this manner the result;

The devices for swinging the arm 18 to the inoperative position consists of the arms (Figs. 4 and 5) and the spring 25 which has its ends attached to studs 47 in the arms.
.These arms are held back out of engage- 7 44 the spring 25 will rotate the arm toward the front of the machine.- Each arm carries an anti-friction roll '49 which engages one of the bevels at the rear end of the releasing arm 18 and, as at the beginning of the operation the arm 18 is locked in position under the lever 20, the roll 49 is stopped against the bevel. However, as soon as the key is released and the arm left free to move as before described, the spring 25 will cause the arm 45 and roller 49 to act against the beveled end of the arm 18 and cam the arm to one side so that the extension 19 will no longer be in operative relation to the lever 20. The roll then passes off of the bevel and continues toward the front of the machine until it is resting a gainstthe' square side 51 of the arm 18. Consequently the arm cannot be again turned in that direction to the position where it can release the same drawer and the key corresponding to that drawer is locked against operation. When the drawer'is closed the angle iron 43 engliges the pin 44 and carriesthe arm 45 back to the normal position after which the key can again be depressed and the register operated to open the same drawer. As can be seen in Fig. 4, the width of the arm 18 and the locations of the rolls 49 on the arms 45 are such that when one-of the drawers is opened the register can be operated to open the other drawer. However, theoperation of the arm 4-5 for the second drawer will occur then as just described in connection with the first arm and as a result the iii-111.18 will be locked in an intermediate position, making both of the keys 1 and 2 ino ".erable.

The bell mufiler 'mechanism comprises two vertical shafts 46. Each shaft has a crank 52 at the upper end with a link 53 connecting the cranks in such a manner that rotation of one will rotate the other in the same direction and to the same extent. At the upper end of one of the shafts is another crank 54. Near the front of the machine is a handle 55 fastened to the upper endof a shaft which carries at its lower end the cam 56. This handle is adjustable to three positions as indieated in Fig. 4 and after being adjusted to the desired position it is locked in that position by means of a lock 57.v A stub shaft 58 has fastened to it an arm 59 which works against the cam 56. The same shaft also carries an arm 60. Attached to the. arm 60 is one end of-a long link 610 the other end being attached to the above mentioned crank 54. It will readily be seen that when the lock 57 is unlocked and the handle 55 turned anti-clockwise the-cam 56 acting against the arm 59 will rock the stub shaft 58 and the arm'60 clockwise, forcing the link 610 toward the rear and turning the shaft 46 also in a clockwise direction. This movement is transmitted to the, other shaft 46 by the intervening link 53 as before stated. Each of the shafts carries secured thereto an arm 64 (Figs. 2, 4 and G.) which when the shafts are rocked the proper distance, engages the bevel face of the lug 63 on the bell hammer trip pawl 39 and 10 1 disconnect it from the bell hammer 34. Then when the lever 20 is operated as above described the bell hammer will not be affected by the pawljand'the alannwill not be sounded.
Fastened to the lower ends of the shafts -l-(i are the short arms 61, Figs. 2, 3 and 5, carrying studs 62 which act as stops for the key lock arms 45. The radial position of the arm 61 on the shaft 46 with reference to the other parts carried by the shaft is indicated by the dotted outline in Fig. 5. \Vhen the handle 55 is at the position shown in Fig. 4, the-arms 61 are held. far enough toward the front of the machine for the studs 62 to permit the key lock-arms 45 to rotate the distance necessary to engage the drawer releasing arm 18 and swing itto the inoperative position and lock it there. The position of the arm 61 at this time is' shown in Fig. 3. When the lever 55 is turned to the Bell on Key-lock ofl? position the shafts 46' are turned and the arms 61 are carried rearwardly far enough for the studs 62 to support the arms 45 in the position in which they are normally held by the drawer angle irons 43. This position'of the arm 61 and the stud 62 is indiby oneof the keys until the other key is used. There is, therefore, nothing to prevent making successive registrations with a drawer open. On turning the handle to the third position, that is, the bell ofi' keylock ofi' position, the shafts 46 are rotated still farther and the arms 61 carried to the position indicated by the numeral 71 (Fig. When turned to this position the stud 62 engages the key lock arm 45, swings it toward the rear of the machine and holds it in the position shown by the dotted outline indicated by the numeral 45?. in this position the arm 45 is not only prevented from interfering with the position of the lever 18, but the bell mufiler arms 64 are forced into engagement with the bevel eled lugs 63 on the bell mufiler trip pawls 39. As a result the-pawls 39 are cammed back out of engagement with the bell hammers, thereby disabling the bell ringing mechanism.
\Vhile the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfil the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment shown and described herein, as it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What is claimed is: r
-1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with an; operating mechanism. of'a series of independent cash drawers, in-
dependent alarms for the respective cashv 65 independent alarms for the respective recepsible 'tacles, manipulative devices under the con trol of which any desired receptacle may be exposed and its alarm sounded by an operation of said operating mechanism, devices controlled by the exposed receptacle locking its corresponding manipulative device against operation until the receptacle is closed, and a common means whereby the locking devices and all of the aforesaid alarms may be simultaneously disabled.

of a pluralitylof drawers, an independent alarm for each, drawer, means requiring an operation of the operating mechanism for opening any desired drawer and sounding its alarm, means normally preventing sue cessive operation of the operating mechanism to sound the same alarm while the drawer remains open, and a lock controlled means whereby said preventing means only may be disabled, or both the preventing meansand all of the aforesaid alarms simultaneously disabled.

In a machineiptthe class described ceptacle may be rendered accessible, means comprising a plurality of spring operated arms for preventing successive operations of a manipulative device while its respective drawer remains open, and an adjustable device for holding said arms out of their effective positions when it is desired to operate a manipulative device successively corresponding drawer open.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with an operating mechanism therefor, of a plurality of drawers each having alatch for holding it closed, manipulative devices, a latch tripping element positioned by any one of said manipulative devices to release its corresponding drawer when the operating mechanism is operated, and means rendered eflective by the opening of the drawer for automatically moving the latch trippingelement out of position to release said drawer and preventing its return to the same releasing position while the drawer remains open.
9. In a machine of the class described, the combination with an operating mechanism with its releasing device being normally in an inefcomprising a spring released when the drawer opens for restoring the common'releasing device to its normal position.

In a machine of the class described, the combinationwith an operating mechanism therefor, of a plurality of drawers, common releasing devices for the drawers, said releasing devices being normally in a neutral position, manipulative devices for positioning said common releasing devices to release any desired, drawer by an operation of the operating mechanism, and means rendered effective by said operation for returning the common releasing devices to neutral position. i r

In a machine of the class described, the combination with an operating mechanism therefor, of a plurality of drawers, a common releasing device for the drawers, said releasing device being normally in an inef fectiie position, manipulative means for p0- sitioning the common releasing deviceto release any desired drawer on an operation of the operating mechanism, and means rendered efi'ective by the opening of the drawer for restoring the common releasing device to its normally ineffective position.

In a machine of the class described, the combination with anoperating mochanism therefor, of'a plurality of drawers, a1 common releasing device for the drawers, said releasing device being normally in an ineffective position, manipulative means for positioning the common releasing device to release any desired drawer on an operation of the operating mechanism, and devices said drawer releasing element to releaseany.
