Letters Patent No. 113,604, dated April 11, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF C'OMPIOSITl-ON-ROOFING. l
The Schedule reerrml to in these Letters Patent making part ol' tho name.
Tol all whom 'it may concern V Be it known that I, JAY J. WIGGIN, of ew York city,.in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Machine for Manufacturing Composition-Roofing; and I do hereby declare that th e following is 'a full, clear, and exact description thereof taken onzthe piane of the line y y, fig. 1.
parts.
This invention relates to anew apparatus for applying rooting compounds to paper, felt, canvas, 'or other fabric, and .consists in the use .of a movable vehicle carrying a distributing-trough and suitable rolL ers for feeding and laying the paper to and upon` the compound that has from the trough been discharged upon a hed of sand, gravel, or other material.
The invention consists, also, in a new form of valve applied to the trough, and in such a construction-cf 'the latter that steam or hot 'water can be kept around the rooting material to retain the samein th'e 'proper A inthe drawing represents the frame of my apparatus. It contaiustwo side pieces a a, which are heid apart by cross-pieces b b,yof` whichthe latter is at the rear end and somewhat elevated, to constitute the;handle for pushing the machine. i
B vis a large roller hung transversely in the frame A; O isa smaller roller-hung in A,behind theroller B; and
D is 4therollerfrorn which the fabric is unwound during the spreading process.
E' is a transverse troughor vessel secured upon the front end of the frameA. vIt basalngitudinal slot, d, in the bottom, which can be closed or more or less opened by a semi-cylindrical valve, e, that is hung in said vessel, Vas shown.
Similar{letter-sofV reference indicate corresponding a hotfwater` on steam-chamber, c, is formed therein, as shown.
fabric is placed within the trough, and the valve e opened to the desired extent. The fabricwonnd on the roller D is laid over the large roller B, and then back under C, asv shown.
.which there is a bed, G, of' sand, properly leveled and prepared.'
- While the `machine is being movedforward on` the track the mixture is depositedfrom the trough upon the sand-bed,'and then the paper is spreadevenly over the compound and pressed thereon by the rollers `B C. The machine is thus moved ahead until the fabric has been entirelyv unwonnd from the roller D down by the rollers. In this manner rooting material is spread with great regularity and rapidity.` The hot water in the hollow sides and ends of the Ltrough retains thel compound at the desired consistency land causes it to ow easily and iu vproper quantity. t
Having thus described mynvention,
I claim as. new andk desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The machine herein described for coveringfabrie with roofing-composition, the saine consisting ofthe frame A, rollers B O D, and discharging-trough E, substantially as set. forth.
distributing-trough E, substantially as and for the purvposes herein shown and described.
3. -The trough Econtaining the valve e, and -provided with the'hollow sides and ends for thereception `of hot water or steam. as specified.
