rHE NORRIS PETERS COI. PHOTOALITHO.. WASHINGTUN. D. C.
'barrial sarafrns 'par TEMPORARY BINDER GR LOOSE-SHEET HOLDER.
Application filed January 6, 1913.
To all 'who/m. it may concern Be it known that l, Ruini-ione Knorr- MING, a. citizen of the United States, residing at liiilwaukee, lllisconsin, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovements in Temporary Binders or Loose-Sheet Holders, of which the following is a speciiication.
rlfhis invention relates to improvements in temporary binders or loose sheet holders rlhe main object of this invention is to provide in a temporary binder or loose sheet helder, an improved adjusting mechanism.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
l accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims,
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure l is an edge view of a structure embodying the features of my invention. Fig. ll is a detail section taken on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. l, the binding and the sheets or leaves being omitted. Fig. lll is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. 1I. Fig.
lV is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 4 4 of Fig. lli. Fig. V is a detail section on a line corresponding to the broken line 5-5 of Fig. lll. Fig. Vl is a detail section on a line corresponding to line 6-6 of Fig. lill.
ln the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
The structure illustrated is of the extensible post type, the binding members 1 being provided with telescoping post members 2 and 8. The binding members 1 are provided with inwardly turned flanges 4.- at their edges. The covers 5 are secured to the binding members by suitable flexible hinge connections 6. The back plate or back piece 7 is provided with upturned fianges 8 at its ends which embrace the ends of the binding members to support them against longitudinal movement.
rlhe binding members 1 are provided with flanges 9 at their ends which slidably engage the flanges 8 of the back piece. An adjust- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr., 20, 1915.
serial no. 740,449.
ing plate 10 is mounted upon the back piece for longitudinal movement, the adjusting plate being provided with longitudinal slots 11 which engage the supports 12 which are shouldered to receive the same, as clearly shown in Figs. 1V and V. A pair of levers 13 are pivotally mounted upon the supports by means of the pivot screws 14. rFliese levers are provided with pins 15 which engage transverse slots 16 in the adjusting plate so that as the adjusting plate is moved longitudinally, the levers are simultaneously actuated. The pins and slots are arranged on opposite sides of the lever pivots so that the levers are actuated in opposite direction. The adjusting plate is actuated by the screw 17 which is journaled in a suitable support 1S on the back piece 7 and its inner end is journaled in the adjacent support 12. This provides a very rigid support for the screw. The screw engages the nut member 19 secured to the under side of the adjusting plate 10.
The binding members are connected to the levers by the links 20, the links being connected to the levers by the pivots 21 and the binding members by the pivots 22. T he binding members are arranged so that their flanges close over the levers when the binder is retracted, the links being oset at 23 to overlap the flanges as illustrated.
By this arrangement of parts a binder having relatively small dimensions may be provided with a large expansion or capacity. 'li'he screw 17 is adjusted by means of the key, one of the flanges of the back piece being provided with a key opening 24 in alinement with the tang of the screw.
The structure here illustrated is a modification and in some respects an improvement upon the structure illustrated and described in my application for patent Serial Number 7 40,447 filed concurrently herewith, in which application l have claimed broadly certain features herein illustrated and described.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. ln a temporary binder, the combination with the binding members provided with inturned flanges at their rear edges, a back plate having forwardly projecting flanges at its ends embracing the ends of said binding members, levers pivotally mounted on said back plate, the flanges of said binding members being adapted to close over said levers, and links` connecting said levers to said binding members, said links being offset forwardly to overlap lthe binding member flanges and being pivotally connected thereto.
2. ln a temporary binder, the combination with the binding members provided with inturned flanges at their rear edges, a back plate having forwardly projecting flanges, at its ends embracing the ends of said binding members, an adjusting member having longitudinal slots therein and transverse slots, said transverse slots being on opposite sides of the longitudinal slots, supports on said back plates engaging the longitudinal slots of said adjusting member whereby it is supported for longitudinal movement, levers pivotally mounted on said supports above said adjusting member, the iianges of said binding members being adapted to close over said levers, pins on said levers engaging said transverse slots whereby the levers are actuated in opposite directions by the longitudinal adjustment o'f Copies of this patent may be obtained for said adjusting member, and links overlapping the ianges of said binding members pivotally connected thereto and to said levers, the links being pivoted to the levers on opposite sides of the lever pivots, all coacting substantially as described.
3. In a temporary binder, the combination of the binding members, a. back plate, an adjusting plate having longitudinal slots therein, supports on said back plates en gaging the longitudinal slots oi' said adjusting plate whereby it is supported for longitudinal movement, operating connections for said adjusting plate to said binding members, and an adjusting screw for said adjusting plate, said screw being journaled in one of said adjusting plate supports.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
