To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. HALLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pipe couplings and more particularly to air or steam pipe couplings for passenger or other trains.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of simple and efficient means for coupling the train pipes of adjoining cars automatically when they are coupled together so as to obviate the necessity of entering between the cars to join the hose, as is customary.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character embodying means which provides for the relative differences in the position of the adjoining cars both as to vertical and lateral displacement.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is arranged to automatically connect train pipes of adjoining cars and which device may be so positioned as to cut off the air or steam when the cars are uncoupled.
iurther objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing. which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a pair of coupled cars showing the position of the devices thereon. Fig. 2 is a verticalsectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4- l of Fig. 3 and locking in the direction of the arrow. Figs. and 6 are sections taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1 and showing the valve in open and closed positions, respectively. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a locking washer. Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1 and 2 represent the separate cars to be connected which are coupled as usual by the ordinary draw heads Suspended from the platform or floor of the car, as is usual,

steam or air or any other suitable controlling medium, as is well understood.
In applying this device to the air pipe the end of the said pipe is preferably closed by a cap 5 and adjacent the cap and interposed in the length of the pipe is a valve casing 6 having one leg 7 of an angular valve body 8 seated therein. The 0pposite leg 9 of the valve body is seated in a casing 10 to be hereinafter described. The leg 7 is provided with oppositely extending ports 10 and 11 which form a communication between the main portion of the pipe 4 and the extension hav ing the cap 5 so that if the apparatus should get out of order an angle cock could be ap plied to the extension having the cap 5 and the usual coupling hose connected thereto.
Both ports 10 and 11 communicate with a horizontal port 12 formed in the leg 7, which horizontal port communicates directly with a vertical port 13 formed in the leg 9. The port or channel 13 communicates with an outlet port 14; and as the casing 10 is revolubly mounted upon the leg 9 the port will communicate with either end 15 or 16 thereof.
Secured to the end 15 is a nozzle 17 ar ranged to fit in the horn 18 of the coupling device of the adjoining car, this horn 18 being secured to the end 16 of the valve casing 10. The horn consists of an elongated sleeve 19 having a flared mouth piece 20 secured thereto so as to direct the nozzle into the horn and this mouth piece is so arranged as to compress a suitable packing 21 in the sleeve 19 to hold a swab 22 in place. The swab 22 is arranged to clear the nozzle 17 of any dirt or other foreign material and the packing is arranged to fit the nozzle so as to make a fluid tight joint.
It will be seen from an inspection of the drawings that when the casing 10 is arranged in position as shown in Fig. 5 that the port 14: will be open to the horn 1S and that when the casing is reversed upon the leg 9 that the port 14: will be open to the nozzle 17, while an inspection of Fig. 6 will show that when the casing 10 is turned at right angles to the line of direction of the train pipe that the air will be cut off from both the horn and the nozzle 17.
In order to support the device in proper position beneath the car body the train pipe is held in brackets 28 and the body 8 has threaded thereinto an extension arm 24: whose terminal end is supported in a hanger 25 depending from the underneath side of the platform or floor of the car.
So far as described, the casing will be free to rotate upon the legs 7 and 9 and in order to prevent such action each leg is pro vided with an extension 26 having a flatted side 27 and fitted upon the extension is a washer 28 having an aperture 29 corresponding with the shape of the extension so as to prevent its rotation thereon. The washer is providedwith a plurality of raised bosses 30 extending radially and arranged at quartering intervals so as to engage similarly positioned recesses or notches 31 arranged in the outer ends of the casings. These washers are held in engagement with the ends of the casing by means of springs 32 which surround the extensions and are arranged between the washers and suitable nuts 33 screwed upon the extension. The nuts are held in position against accidental loss by the cotter pins 34 and serve to adjust the tension of the springs 32 when necessary.
In the operation of the device the horn 18 of one car is arranged to project toward the adjoining car while the adjoining car has the nozzle thereof projecting toward the horn so that when the cars are brought together to' be coupled the nozzle will project into the'horn, pass through the swab and packing and be free to work back and forth. As the casings 10 are arranged to rotate upon the legs 9 it will be seen that any difference in relative lateral movement between the cars will not affect the connection and as the legs 7 are rotatably mounted within the casings 6 any relative distance in position vertically will not afiect the connection.
It will, of course, be understood that while the casing 10 is normally held against movement through the medium of the washer 28 and the leg 7 held against movement through the engagement of the washer of the casing 6 that these parts may be moved when suflicient pressure is used toward this end.
As electrical connections may be made in a similar manner I do not wish to be restricted to the showing in the present drawings but to the invention as covered by the appended claim.
IVhat is claimed is 2- In combination, conductor elements arranged to be secured to the cars to be connected and adapted to carry a source of energy, angular controlling members having one leg pivoted in the conductor elements, coupler elements pivoted for horizontal movement upon the other leg of said angular controlling members, and means for holding the controlling members and the coupling elements in operative coupling position, said means aranged to permit relative lateral and vertical movement between the cars and to hold the coupling elements in inactive position when necessary thereby cutting off the source of energy to the coupling elements.
