l .Be it known that We, ERNEST FERRAN and FRANCIS D. TWEEDDALE, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State, of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Call-Registering Devices for Telephones, of which the following is va specification. i
Our invention relates to registering de- .vices for telephones wherein the electrically operated mechanism in nickel telephone boxes operates mechanical means for registering the number of switches. obtained through the telephone to which the said nickel boX is connected, and the objects of our invention are first, to provide improved means for registering every switch or connection which is made through the telephone to which the device is connected; and second, to provide improved means for regis; tering calls Where the desiredA connection or party is not obtained. In telephones Where a nickel or token box is used, theonly means by which the number of switches obtained may be determined, is by the number of 4token'in the bex. Subscribers have discovered and 'invented various means of obtaining switches and operating the signals at the central station without using tokens.
In the present equipment, a is provided with a cover 2 having an upper slot 3 through which the nickel or token Vv is inserted. The frame 4.- secured to the lbase plate l and Within the cover, 2, is provided With the impressed slot fhaving the inclined receiving portion 5, the curved passage 6' and the inclined return -or refund portion 8 through whichy the token V is delivered through the lovver slot 9 .of the cover 2 and into a suitable, receptacle 10. The lower ends of the springs 19y and 20 rest on the edge of -the bearing 17 the upper edge of the armature 16 so that when the said armature is operated by either coil l2 or 14 the engage the spring on that side and be returned-to normalposition by.

Pins 24 and 25A are. secured to the arina-` ture 16, the pin 125 being insulated therefrom, and project through apertures in the curved ortion 6 of the: slot in the frame 4 in suc a position that a token, of the 'cor- 'jrect size and shape in the said slot, will be retained by the said pins 24 and 25.
In the present state of the art when the party using the telephone desires to attract the attention of the operator for the purpose of making the desired connection, a token V is de osited in the slot 3 of the 'cover 2 and ro g. down theinclined portion 5 is delivered between the pins 24 and 25.

' suitable coils arranged to attract either end of the armature and to Withdraw one of the apins thereon; registering means operatively 'connected to one end of the said armature and arranged to register each movement of the said armature; and means for registering the passage of a token through the rex fund portion of the token slot.

In a callregistering device for telephones, the combination with a token collecting boX and the mechanism therefor, of a frame yhaving a token slot With a refund portion and a collectingxportion therein; a centrally pivoted armature mounted upon the frame and insulated therefrom; a pin secured to each end of the armature and projecting into the slot Within the frame, onevof the said pins being insulated from the said armature and arranged to release a token into the refund portion of the slot, the Aother pin being arranged to release a token into the collecting portion of the said slot; a disk rotatably mounted on the frame and having numerals successively arranged near the periphery thereof; a second disk rotatably mounted vvithin the first mentioned disk and having successive numerals arranged near the periphery thereof; suitable coils arranged to attract one end of the armature and the pin thereon and release a token into the collecting portion of the token slot and partially rotate the first mentioned incassa' disk when a current is passed through the said coils in one direction and to Withdraw the insulated pin and release a tolreir'l. into the refund portion of the token slot and to partially rotate the first mentioned disk u When a current is passed through 'the coiis in the opposite direction; and a coil ai. ranged to be electrically connected with the current 'flowing through lthe lirst mentioned coils, by the passage of a token through the refundrportion of the slot, and to partially rotate the second mentioned disk.
