To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY G. VocEL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania,have invented a new and useful Combined Table'and Clothes-Drier, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful table and clothes rack and consists of mechanical means for converting the table into a rack or vice versa.

It further consists of novel means for raising the table top and for locking the same in its elevated position.

It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a combined table and clothes rack embodying my invention, showing parts broken away. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a portion of the device in detached po sition. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view of the casing, gear and rack employed. Fig. 5 represents a sectional view of the table, with parts omitted, showing the position of the track and roller when the parts are closed. Fig. 6 represents a partial side elevation and partial sectional view of portions of the device, showing the boxes.

Similar numerals of reference indicate coresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings. In a combined table and clothes rack, I have found that it is necessary to be able to place the rack in suitable position and to close the same by simple means and at the same time, provide for the opening and closing of the table top. My invention is designed for these purposes and in the drawings, I have shown a construction which I have found in practice operates successfully, but it will be evident that changes may be made in the arangement of the parts and other instrumentalitics may be employed, which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described, but desire to make such changes as may come within the scope of the invention.

any desired manner from longitudinal movement. At a suitable point on said shaft, I mount a gear 5 which is adapted to mesh with a rack bar 6 guided in a suitable manner in the casing 7, carried by the frame 1 of the table, it being noted that said casing is closed excepting at the point where the gear 5 is situated, where it is open, in order that the same can mesh with the teeth of the rack. On the upper end of the rack is journaled a roller 8, which is normally situated slightly below the upper edge of the frame or sides of the table. Hinged or otherwise suitably secured to the frame 1 is the table top 9, to which is attached a track 10 having the inclined or cam face 11 at one end, it being noted that said face is situated on the inner sideof the roller 8 when the parts are closed.

12 designates a stop or pin carried by the track against which the roller is adapted to abut when the parts are in elevated position or at the proper time.

13 designates arms which are pivotally attached at a suitable point in their length, as at 1%, to the frame of the table, the upper portions of said arms having the rods 15 extending across to similar arms 13 on opposite sides of the frame and to these arms 13 and 18 are pivotally attached the arms 16 and 16 which are pivoted at the point 17 forming a lazy tong construction, it being understood that any desired or required number of these arms are connected together.

From the lower or free ends of the arms 13 and 13 are the extending cords or cables 18, which pass around the shaft 1.

The operation of the parts will be readily apparent. When the parts are in closed position, the clothes rack or lazy tong construction is closed within the frame of the table and the lid or top 9, of the table, is down. When it is desired to use the device as a clothes rack, by rotating the shaft 4, which can be done in any desired manner, in the present instance by grasping the bar 19, the gear 5 is rotated which raises the rack bar 6 causing the roller 8 to abut against the bottom of the table top 9. The roller 8 first comes into engagement with the inclined or cam face 11 thus causing the lid 9 to be raised and a continued movement of the rack bar 6 brings the table top to the upright position shown in Fig. 2 with the roller 8 in contact with the face of the track 10, thus holding or locking the top in its elevated position, it being understood, of course, that if it is desired to extend the lazy tongs to their farthermost position,the roller 8 will contact with the stop or pin 12. As the rack bar 6 is being elevated, the cords or cables :18 are wrapped around the shaft 4 or may be operated in any desired manner, so that the free ends of the arms 13 and 13 are caused to approach each other, thus rotating the upper portions of the arms around the pivot point 14 and causing the extension of the lazy tong construction, whichwill thus assume the position seen in Figs. 1 and 2.

. As soon as it 1s desired'to discontinue the use of the device as a clothes rack and it is again desired to use it as a table, by a re verse rotation of the shaft 4, the lazy tongs will be lowered into the table. The rack bar 6 is lowered, permitting the lid or top 9 to fall back into position.- It will thusbe seen that the table top is mechanically elevated and locked in its elevated position while the clothes rack is brought into operative position.

Between the arms of the clothes rack and carried by the frame 1, I preferably place the boxes or receptacles 20 adapted to 'receive the clothes or other articles, and which can remain in the receptacles whether the table is opened or closed.

7 Upon the shaft 4 I preferably place the ratchet 21 and mount the dog 22 upon a suitable stationary point so that said dog can engage the ratchet and thus lock the parts and prevent rotation of the shaft as desired, by which means the clothes dried can be elevated from the table and held at the desired predetermined point.

Having thusdeseribed my invention, what I claimas newand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In aidevice of the character described, a table, a clothes rack foldable therein, and means for elevating the table top and opening the clothes-rack simultaneously into operative position. a 2. In a device of the character described, a table, having a top hinged thereto, a clothes rack foldable in said table, and means for simultaneously raising said top and opening said clothes rack and for locking said top in its elevated position.

3. In a device of the character described, a table, a top, a clothes rack foldable in said table, a rack bar suitablysupported, means engaging said rack bar for raising and lowering the same, and a roller 011 said rack bar engaging with the table top to elevate the same and hold it in elevated position, and means for elevating said clothes rack.

4. In a device of the character described, a table, a top hinged thereto, a clothes rack foldable in said table, a shaft suitably supported and having a gear, a rack bar suitably supported and engaged by said gear, a roller on said rack bar, a track on said top with which said roller is adapted to contact when the top is in elevated position, and means for elevating said clothes rack.

5. In a device of the character describer'l, a table, a top hinged thereto, a clothes rack foldable in said table, a shaft journaled in said table, a gear on said shaft, a rack bar with which said gear meshes, a roller on said rack bar, a track on said table having an inclined face leading thereto and with which track and face the roller contacts, and means connected with said clothes rack and adapted to be suitably actuated by the rotation of said shaft for elevating or lowering said clothes rack.

6. In a device of the character described, a table, having a. top, a clothes rack foldable within said table, means for elevating the table top and said clothes rack and opening the latter simultaneously, and means in engagement with said elevating means for locking the same whereby the rack can be held in different positions.

7. In a device of the character stated, a table, a movable top for said table, an expansible clothes rack foldably mounted within said table, means to expand said clothes rack, and means operated by said expanding means to lock said top in open position.

8. In a device of the character stated, a table, a top movably secured to said table, an expansible clothes rack secured to said table, and common means to expand said clothes rack and elevate said table top.

9. In a device of the character stated, a table, a top movably secured to said table and adapted to be raised and lowered, an expansible clothes rack secured within said table and foldable therein, and means to expand said clothes rack in a vertical direction and hold the same in expanded position.
