MANsoN, a citizen of the-.United States,V residing at llyria, Lorain county,A Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in VVarning-Signal Devices.; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention7 such as will enable others skilled in the art to -which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to warning signal devices, such as are. adapted to be used upon motor driven vehicles, for fog horns, or wherever it is desired to give 'a warning signal. lt/l'y invention more particularly relates to a type of signal of this character in which a diaphragm is actuated by a roughened wheel.
'lllhe particular objects of my invention and the invention itself will probably be better understood from a detailed description of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of my invention with the rear casing removed, a portion of the apparatus being shown in section. Fig. 2 is`a cross-sectional view of the embodiment shown in Fig. l. lP 3 is an end view of the motor employed in the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and Q. Fig. 4 is a view of the motor showing one of the eld coils in section. Figa 5 shows the end of the motor opposite .from that shown in Fig. 3. Figs. (S, 7 and 8 are details showing the roughened wheel emA ployed for operating the diaphragm.
Referring now to the embodiment illustrated in the drawing, at 10 l show a frame piece or supporting member, which is here shown as provided with a. large opening 11 in the central portion thereof. As will be seen, the frame piece 10 is iiat, so that it occupies but littleV space. A casing front 12 is provided, struck up, as shown at 13, to form a chamber for the diaphragm. As a draft must flow through this chamber to permit its clearance of foreign matter entering through the resonator, it is made large so that there will always be clearance 'for the draft, even when the diaphragm is in its maximum forward position.` An opening 14 is formed in the casing front, preferably in the central portion thereof. A resonator 15 may be provided connected in any suitable manner to .the easing front.V

The sonorous member, here shown as a vibratile diaphragm, is illustrated at 17. The diaphragm is clamped between the front and frame piece, as illustrated, and connected thereto by suitable means, such as screws 18. In the form shown, the diaphragm, the frame pieceand casing front are perforated, and the screws driven. through these perforations tightly drawing and holding the parts together, l prefer to insulate these parts and separate them by some suitable means, such as cork washers 20.
The outer edges of the front casing piece are turned back, as shown at 21, leavin a small space 22 between the annular mem er 21 and the frame piece, in order that the edges of the casing back 24 may be slipped in between these members. rlhe diaphragm actuating means is mounted upon the frame piece in any suitable manner. ln the form shown, l have mounted upon the diaphragm an anvil 25, which consists of a rivet-shaped member having a head 26 and a conical point 2T. Shock absorbing members 29 are placed between the head and point of' the members 25 and the diaphragm. These members are adapted to yield slightly under the shock of the wheel. lThe force which operates thev diaphragm is transmitted through the conical point 27.

A rouglrened wheel is provided for operating the diaphragm, in the form illustrated, operating through the member 25. The wheel 60 is mounted upon a hollow member 61 which is fastened to the armature shaft and rotates The member G1 also carries the commutator 62, so that the wheel 60, the commutator and the member 61 constitute a unitary structure removable from the armatureshaft independently of the armature. The wheel 60 is provided with a plurality of openings 70, through which the conductors from the armature to the commutatorl pass. The wheel 60 is roughened, as shown at by a plurality of serrations, which in running over the point 27 cause the diarhragm to vibrate. The wheel 60 is vformed by punching out a cup and indenting the sides thereof to produce the desired serrations. The apparatus is compactly mounted. 'A portion of the armature coil may extend within the shallow cup formed ofthe member G0, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The electrical terminals are mounted removably from the frame piece 10, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. When the member 60 is rotated, the roughened surface passing over the member 27 will Ycaiise the center of the. diaphragm to be displaced, flexing the diaphraffm. I believe these vibrations take place in nodes and in other irregular manlner, producing a loud signal. The vibrations are forced, regardless' of the natural free rate of vibration of the diaphragm.
It will be seen that theo apparatus constituting my invention is very compactly mounted, so compactly, in fact, that it forms mounted to one side a flat horn which can be mounted upon the handle bars of a motorcycle, or under the hood of an automobile without occupying space enough to interfere with the operation of the one "or the inspection of the apparatusunder Athe hoodlv of the other. It will also 'be seen that the roughened wheel 60 is of the armature and is removable with the commutator, so that these' parts can be removed without taking .the armature to pieces. y

I have shown specific details in the specific embodiments illustrated, for the purpose of describing my inlvention, and not that I wish to be limited either to the form illustrated or thcdetails shown therein, as it will be lapparent that many departures may be made from both the form and the details, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In an automobile horn, the combination of a flat frame piece having an opening therein, a casing front, a diaphragm mountedi between the casing front and the frame piece, an electric motor on the back of the lframe p-iece having an armature shaft suhstantially parallel to the dialihragm, anv armature on saidfshat't, a commutator on said shaft anda rolghened wheel on said shaft between the armature and the commutator adapted to be rotated when the armature shaft is rotated, and means through which said Toughened' wheel vibrates said diaphragm when the motor is operated.
2. In an automobile horn, the combination of a vibratile diaphragm, supporting means therefor, an electric motor, an armature shaft for said motor mounted substantially parallel to the diaphragm, an armature and a commutator on said shaft, and a roughened wheel between the armature and commutator adapted to be rotated when the armature is rotated and to cause the actuation of the diaphragm.
3. In an automobile horn, the combination of a flat frame piece having an opening therein, a casing front, a vibratile diaphragm clamped between said front and frame piece, said diaphragm being exposed at the rear through the opening, an electric motor mountedon theback side of the frame piece, a rotary armature for said motor mounted on one-side of the center of the diaphragm, a commutator for said motor on the other side of the center` of the diaphragm, an armature shaft carrying said armature and commutator, and a roughened Wheel mounted upon said shaft between the armature and commutator and adapted to be rotated when the armature is 'rotated to cause the actuation-cf the diaphragm.
