ASSIGNQR TO AMERICAN STEEL SY'la TN G-YLANK-LOCKIN G DEVICE.
Applies non files; Jenner To all whomv it may 0mm 2:
Be it known that I Join A. LAMon'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Granite City, in the county oi Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Plenk-Locking Devices, of which the fol-- lowing is e, specification.
My invention relates to car trucks and articular reference to a novel spring plank locking device for use in connection therewith.
It is essential in the operation of car trucks that the side frames shall be tied together intermediate their ends this usually biting aaiomplished by the use of a spring nk or similar connecting device. In the use of east side frames it. is desirable that means shall be provided for readily disentying member therefrom and devices have been proposed with that However, all of these devices have certain objections which are sought to many be overcome in the present structure.
The tying member or spring plank need comparatively thin section ol metal may be utilized and preferably this member should in order to secure certain advantages "which are well known to those skilled in the art.
plank it 18 somewhat diflicult to provide any integral attaching element by means at which the plank or Furthermore it essential that the springs should rest upon a block or filler in order device is combined with the spring plank locking element in the present. structure. stood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein, of a side frame with my novel improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2 1S :1 plan view Fig. 3 i a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawis provided with a bolster opening 11, and with a seat or shelf 12, on which a spring not be of great size or weight. In fact a be of considerable width In the use of a thin section or the spring plate may be secured to the side frames to provide :1 secure sent therefor. plank may or may not be provided with the flanges 14. At each end the plank 12L is provided with font apertures 15, re ax-tering with similar apertures 1&3, through the seat 19. As a locking means I provide a block 1'7, having bosses 18 projecting from one face thereof, these bosses being adapted to enter the registering openings in the spring plank and seat. On the upper surface of the block 17, are small recesses 19, with which lugs, carried by the spring reminer, may coiiperate.
It will be seen that by the use of the construction shown the spring plank is securely held in place without the of rivets or bolts and that a comparatively light spring lank may be employed, the lockinq memher for the parts providing also a block on which the springs may rest.
The construction is capable of considerable modification and such modifications as are within the scope of my claims I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a car truck, a side frame having an apcrtured seat. a spring plank and a block il'fivldfid with bosses, said block resting upon said plank and said bosses serving to lock said spring plank and side frame together.
2-. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame having an apertured seat, a spring plank having apertures registering with those .in said seat, and a block having bosses registering with the apertures in sai plank and seat and adapted to removnbly loci; the parts together.
3. In a car truck, the combination of a side frame member having an epertured seat, a plate extending between adjacent side frames, said plate being provided with apertures in its ends registering with the zipertures in said side frame tnemberm springsupporting block, and lugs on said block, said lugs being adapted to enter apertures in said plate and side frame member an lock said parts together.
