useful Improvements in Gas-Engine-Valve- Grinding Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others-skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to tools, particu: larly to grinding and drilling tools, and. has for its object the provision of a simple and novel device by means of which the valve seats of a gasolene engine may be-properly ground.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character, the parts of which may be shifted and locked so that it may be used as a boring or drilling device.
More specifically the object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this character having means whereby the valve grinding tool may be rotated first in one direction and then in the reverse direc: tion by merely turning the handle continuously in one direction, automatic means being provided for operating the clutches for accomplishing this reversal. v
A further object is the provision of a device of this character which is simple and inexpensive in manufacture, practical and eficient in use, durable in service and a general improvement ofthe art.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,

Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device in operative position as a valve grinder, one clutch being engaged, Fig. 2 is a similar view, the other clutch being engaged and a the first clutch released, Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view, Fig. 5 is a sectional view through a portion of the device showing it adapted for use as adrill'stock, and F ig. 6 is a side elevation of the same portion of the frame showing the catch.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral "10 designates the main frame of the device which is formed preferably rectangular in shape and of any suitable material. The frame 10 comprises sides 11 and 12 and ends 13 and 14. A secondary frame 15 is secured upon the side 11 by bolts 16 or the like.
A shaft 17 is j'ournaled through the ends 13 and 14 of the main. frame and also through the secondary frame 15 and carries upon 1ts outer end any suitable chuck 18 or \lother suitable means for holding the desired tools for properly grinding valve seats, these not being shown as they form no part of v the present invention.
In order to rotate the shaft 17, T provide a second shaft 19 journaled through the side 12 of the main frame and through the secondary frame 15, having a gear 20 secured thereon. An operating handle 21 is secured upon the outer end of the shaft 19 whereby-it may be rotated. In order to drive the shaft 17 by rotation of the handle 21, I provide sleeves 22 and 23, loosely mounted upon the shaft 17 and carrying upon their inner ends pinions 2 1 and 25. The outer ends of the sleeves 22 and 23 are provided with clutch faces 26 and 27 respectively. As the handle 21 is rotated, the sleeves 22 and 23 will be constantly rotated owing to the engagement of the gear 20 with the pinions 24 and 25. Splined upon the shaft 17 outwardly of the sleeves 22 and 23 are shiftable members 28 and 29 pro vided upon their inner faces with clutch faces 30 and 31 adapted to be selectively engaged with the clutch faces 26 and 27.
When grinding valve seats, it is desirable that the shaft 17 be rotated first in one direction and then in the other. In order to accomplish this, I provide a yoke 32-disposed against the inner face of the side 12 of-the frame and provided at its center with an elongated slot for. the reception of the shaft 19. The yoke 32 has formed thereon laterally extending arms 33 and 34 which are disposed within grooves 35 and 36 formed in the clutch members 28 and 29.
The guides 37 are secured upon the ends of When the device is being used for grind ing a valve seat, rotation of the handle 21 and forth within the frame 10. As the yoke moves toward the lower end of the frame, the clutch members 27 and 31 will be engaged, and the shaft 17 will be rotated to the left. As the yoke is moved toward the upper end of the frame 10 by the engagement of the cam 38 with the stop 39, the clutch niembersi27 and 31 will be disengaged and the clutch members 26 and. 30 will be engaged, thereby rotating the shaft 17 to the right. This alternate rotary movement of the shaft 17 will be produced as long as the handle 21 is rotated.
In order to adapt the device for drilling or boring, it is necessary that the yoke 32 be looked upon the frame at one extremity of its movement, and to so arrange the stops that the yoke cannot be shifted by the cam. In order to accomplish this, the stop 40 is provided with slots 41 and 42 for the reception of screws 43 and 44 secured in the yoke 32. The screw 44 is provided with a wing nut 45 so that the stop may be locked in the path of or out of the path of the cam 38..
In using the device as a drill stock the yoke 32 is shifted I upwardly so that the lower clutch members 26 and 30 will be in engagement. The stop 40 is then slid outwardly and locked so" as to be out of the path of travel of the cam 38. The yoke 32 is then looked in its uppermost position by means of a spring latch 46 having a tongue 47 extending through a hole 48 in the side 12 of the frame 10 and extending into a hole 49 in the yoke 32. Rotation of the handle 21 to the right will then cause the shaft 17 to be rotated to the right continuously. When the device is being used as a valve seat grinder, the spring latch 46 is swung to one side, so that the tongue 47 will engage the side 12 and not extend into the holes 48 and 49.
It will of course, be obvious that the frame 10 is provided with a breast plate or other suitable means whereby it may be held by the operator.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawing it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simple and novel device by means of which reciprocatory rotary movement is produced for grinding valve seats or a continuous rotary movement is produced for boring or drilling, the changebeing almost instantly made by the operator.
It will be readily understood that I reserve the right to make various changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of the invention or limiting the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus 'described my invention, I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a shaft journaled therethrongh and carrying means for holding a tool, and .ns for rotating said shaft first in one direction and then in the opposite direction, said means comprising a shaft operating with a handle, a gear carried by said second named shaft, a pair of pinions loosely mounted on said first named shaft and engaging said gear, clutch members formed on said pinions, other clutch members splined upon said first named shaft, a yoke slidable within said frame and engaging said second named clutch members, projections on said yoke adjacent said second named shaft, a cam on said second named shaft and adapted to engage said projections for moving said yoke within said frame, whereby the corresponding pairs of said first and second named clutch members will be alternately engaged and disengaged, and means for locking said yoke at one extremity of its movement whereby one pair of clutch members will be held in engagement, one of said projections being then disposed out of and the other projection being movable out of the path of travel of said cam.
2. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a shaft j ournaled therethrough and provided with means for carrying a tool, pinions loosely mounted upon said shaftand carrying clutch members, a second shaft journaled in said frame, an operating handle on said second named shaft, a gear on said second named shaft and meshing with said pinions, clutch members splined upon said first named shaft, a yoke slidable in said frame and engaging said second named clutch members, and means on said second named shaft for moving said yoke back and forth within said frame whereby the corresponding clutch members will be alternately engaged and disengaged.
3. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a shaft journaled therein and carrying tool holding means, and means for rotating said shaft in opposite directions alternately, said means comprising a shaft journaled in said frame and provided with an operating handle, a gear on said second named shaft, a cam on said second named shaft, a pair of pinions loosely mounted on said first named shaft and meshing with said gear, clutch members on said pinions, other clutch members splined upon said first named shaft, a yoke slidable within said frame and engaging said second named clutch members, a projection secured on said yoke at one side of said cam, a second projection slidable upon said yoke at the other side of said cam,
means for securing said second named projection in its adjusted positions, and a catch for holding said yoke at one extremity of its movement with said first named projection out of the path of movement of said cam, said second named projection being moved into its position out of the path of travel of said cam, whereby one pair of said clutch members may be held in engagement for imparting continuous rotation to said 10 named shaft. o
