Application filed February 3, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE F. BEEBE, a citizen of the United States, resident of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to simplify and improve the washing machines shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, issued to me September 7, 1909, No. 933,050, and October 5, 1909, No. 935,953.
A further object is' to provide means in connection with the clothes pounders which will render them practically noiseless in the operation of the machine.
A .further object is to facilitate the movement of the pounders and reduce the operating mechanism to a minimum number of parts.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan View of a washing machine embodying my invention,'Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, illustrating the position of the pounders in the tub and the preferred form of operating mechanism for the tub, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the machine, showing the mechanism for operating the same, Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view, illustrating in detail the pounder operating mechanism, Fig. 5 is a detail view of the upper portion of the machine, showing the cover of the tub in its raised position,'Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of one of the pounders and the supporting. yoke therefor.
In the drawing, 2 represents the supporting legs of the machine, on one side, and 3 the legs on the opposite side of the machine.
4 The legs 3 are substantially upright, while the upper portion of the legs 2 are inwardly I inclined and secured together at their upper ends, as indicated in Fig. 3. Suitable braces 4 and 5 are secured to the opposite legs to brace and support the same. A cross bar 6 is secured to the middle portions of the legs and extends beneath a tub 8 which is supported on a central bearing 9. The tub is provided on its underside with a ratchet ring 10 that is engaged by a dog 11 mounted on a pivotal'arm 12. A crank 13 secured on Specification of Letters Patent.

an arm 22 which is centrally mounted on arocking spindle 23 on the upper ends of the legs 2 and has a link 24 connecting-its other arm with'an operating lever 25. When this lever is operated, the rod 21 will be set in motion to revolve the shaft 14 and through its ratchet connection revolve the tube. A casting 26 is preferably mounted on the upper ends of the legs 2 and has a bearing 27 for the spindle 23 and is also provided with an inwardly projecting bracket 28. The spindle 23 has a fork 29 at its inner end and is pivotally connected with the outer end of a shaft 30 that is journaled in bearings in a plate 31, preferably of cast metal, having ears 32 for securing it to the top of the tub cover 33 and a forked outer end 34 that is pivotally connected with cars 35 projecting upwardly from the bracket 28. This construction allows the shaft 30 to berocked with the movement of the rocking spindle 23 i and also allows the cover 33 to be swung to an open position on the pivots of the plate 31. The inner end of the shaft 30 is secured to the middle portion of a rocker 36 and a second corresponding rocker 37 is centrally mounted on the upper end of an upright arm 38 that is preferably formed integrally with the horizontal arm 31. The link 39 is pivotally connected with the arm 38 at its inner end and at its outer end is .notched to receive a lug 40. This link operates as a lock to hold the cover in its closed horizontal position. Whenever desired, the
link may be lifted and disengaged from the lug 40 to allow the cover to be raised.
The ends of the arms 36 and 37 are forked and pivotally connected with upright yokes 41 which are movable vertically within openings 42 provided in the cover 33. These yokes form guides for plunger rods 43 to.

The pair of rocking arms 37 and 38 form, in effect, a parallel link motion and guide the yokes 41 in their vertical movement and prevent them from getting out of alinement and also keep the clothes pounders and their plungers" from swaying out of thgir vertical position with respect to the tu e I claim as my invention 2- 1. A washing machine comprising a frame, a tub mounted therein, a casting secured to said frame near the top of said .tub and having an inwardly projecting bracket formed thereon, a plate hinged on said bracket and projecting inwardly over said tub, a cover secured to said plate, a rocker arm centrally pivoted on said plate, means for rocking said arm, and clothes pounders andvplunger arms therefor operativelv connected with said rocker arm, said plate -vi; ging upwardly and outwardly on its pl ot to raise said cover and pounders.

A Washing machine comprising a frame, a tub mounted therein, a cover for said tub, a plate mounted on said frame and secured to said cover, a rock shaft journaled in said plate, clothes pounders operatively connected with said rock shaft, a spindle journaled in said frame and having its inner end pivotally connected with said rock shaft, and a pitman-rod operatively connected with said spindle.

A washing machine comprising a frame, a tub mounted therein, a cover for said tub, a rock shaft having bearings above said cover and projecting inwardly over the same, clothes pounders operatively connected with said rock shaft, a rocking spindle pivotally connected with said rock shaft and having an arm thereon, a pitmanrod connected with said arm, an operating lever, and a'link pivotally connecting said operating lever with said spindle for rocking said spindle and said shaft, and a driving mechanism connecting said pitman-rod with said tub.
