RUDOLPH C. PLEINS, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR. T0 PLETNS SEAL LOCK COMPANY, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESGTA, A CORPORATION OF MINNESOTA.
HINGE.
Application filed February 27, 1814.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, RUDOLPH O. PLnINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges, its object being particularly to provide an improved hinge for box covers which will allow a particularly complete opening movement of the cover while reinforcing and bracing the hinge and protecting the same from injury when the supporting cover is in closed position.
To this end the invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
lln the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a hinge showing the members separated and with one member partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a section through the box cover and adjacent wall fitted with my improved hinge and showing the box cover open; Fig. 8 is a similar View showing the box cover closed; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the method of putting the members together.
In the drawings, A represents the pintle member and B the knuckle member of the hinge. The member B is formed at one end with an opening 2 through which the pintle Sis inserted, the end of the member B forming the opening, being bent to form the knuckle 4:- The pintle member, which is socured inside the side wall 5, as by nails or screws 6 is formed with an outwardly bent portion 7 to rest upon the top of the side wall, and with an upwardly bent free end 8 which is formed at its extreme edge with a pintle 3. The knuckle member is secured to the underside of the top 9 of the box as by nails or screws 10 and is formed at its outer end with an upwardly bent portion 11 which at its free edge is formed with a knuckle 4.
With the hinge members connected and se cured to the cover and adjacent side wall of .Ethe box, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the right Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 113, 1215.
Serial no. 821,389.
angle bend of the knuckle member will rest within the right angle pocket of the pintle member formed by the bent portions 7 and 8. This brings the knuckle of the knuckle member above the top of the box and leaves the back of the box free from any projecting parts, as knuckles, that could be injured by contacting bodies. This also allows the knuckle to be protected by the ordinary cleats 12 secured upon the top of the cover. To hold the hinged members in position and prevent twisting I provide the lug 13 projecting downwardly from the portion 8 of the pintle member, said lug bearlng against the outer face of the adjacent side wall of the box in use, as shown.
By means of my particular features of construction and arrangement I secure a hinge which will, as shown in Fig. 2, allow the cover to be opened to a far greater extent than is possible with the ordinary constructi on where the pintle stands outside the side wall of the box.
I claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a box and cover, a strap hinge of the class described, comprising a flat knuckle membersecured to the un der side of the box cover and formed with an upwardly extending outer end supporting a knuckle above the box cover, and a pintle member secured to the inner face of the adjacent side wall of the box and bent outwardly across the top of the side wall, thence upwardly past the adjacent outer edge of the cover and thence inwardly over the top of the cover, the pintle member carrying a pintle at its upper free edge secured within the knuckle.
2. The combination with a box and cover, of a strap hinge of the class described, comprising a flat knuckle member secured to the under side of the box cover, and formed with an upwardly extending outer end supporting a knuckle above the box cover, said knuckle being bent inwardly over the cover, and a pintle member secured to the inner face of the adjacent side of the wall of the box and bent outwardly across the top of the side wall, thence upwardly past the ad jacent outer edge of the cover, and thence inwardly over the coi er, the pintle member In testimony whereof I affix my signature carrying a plntle at 1ts upper free edge sein presence of two Witnesses.
cured within the knuckle and a lug projecting downwardly from the pintle member of RUDOLPH PLEINS' 5 thehinge for engagement with the outer face Witnesses:
of the box wall to prevent twisting of said H. S. JOHNSON, hinge. H. SWANSON.
