To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX RooKs'rRoH, manufacturer, a subject or citizen of the Kingdom of Saxony, in the German Empire, residing at Villa Liitzow, Klein Sedlitz, near Pirna, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Platen Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to protective devices or guards on platen presses for preventing injury to the hand of the workman.
Platen presses are known which are thrown out of gear and simultaneously braked by a protective bow or small frame. In these known devices the danger of the hand being crushed is not completely obviated, particularly when the workman puts his hand, after the guard or frame is already bearing against the surface of the platen, into the narrow gap between the platen and bed in order to adjust the guard, which is inserted slantwise, as frequently occurs. As the platen has then already passed under the guard, or the small frame is already bearing on the platen, the protection to the hand is no longer operative.
A primary object of this invention is to provide an improved protective device to which this defect is not attached.
To this end, I arrange over the gap between the platen and the bed a sheet-metal plate which runs transversely over the machine and covers over the gap between the platen and the bed. When the workmans hand is placed in a dangerous position the plate is shifted and the machine is thrown out of gear and braked, so that the movable plate takes the place of the hitherto usual bow or frame and renders the same superfluous.
Two illustrative embodiments of my invention are represented by way of example in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation showing one form of my improved protective device when the machine is working normally, Fig. 2 is a like view showing the position of the device when the hand is placed against it before the complete closure of the platen, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are like views, respectively, showing the second form.
Referring firstly to Figs. 1 to 3, levers 2 are pivotally mounted on the side of the the stop 7 for the disconnecting gear are mounted on the spindle 3. This plate covers over the dangerous place, While the stop 7 brings about the disengagement and braking of the machine, as when the hand is placed on the platen under the plate 6, this stop bears on the arm 8 of the two-armed lever 9.. rotatable about the fixedly pivoted lever 11, rotates this two armed lever and, by means of the connecting-rod 12, lifts the catch 10 away from the disconnecting rod 13. WVhen the machine is working normally, on the contrary, the stop 7 passes the arm 8 of the lever 9 without contacting with it. (Fig. 1).
Referring now to Figs. 4 to 6, in this form the machine is not thrown out of gear directly by the rocking of the plate, but illdirectly by means of an intermediate member mounted on the platen. A plate 18 is rotatable about the ends 17 of two supports 16 screwed to the left-hand and right-hand sides of the frame of the machine. One end of this plate is carried by one arm of an angle lever 26 whose other arm 19 is formed as a cam. This cam controls the lever-arm 20 which is fast on the one end of a spindle 21 passing transversely through the platen, and on whose other end is mounted the intermediate member or lever-arm 22. When 'the machine is working normally the cam 19 bears on the lever 20, whereby the intermediate member 22 on the other side of the platen is lifted so that it passes freely over the arm 23 of the disconnecting lever 24: (Fig. 4:). If the hand remains on the platen, as shown in Fig. 5, the cam 19 is lifted and does not bear on the lever 20. Consequently, the arm 22 is not influenced and remains in the path of the stop 23 against which it abuts when the platen is closed, whereby the disconnecting lever 24: is rocked and the catch 25 lifted from the disconnecting rod 27 and releases the same.
