GUT-OUT BOX.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERTO. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented .a new and useful Improvement in Cut-Out Boxes, of which the following is a specification;

This invention relates to a cut-out box which is more particularly designed for containing a main line switch and fuses, although of course it is adapted to contain other than a main line switch and fuses.

The object of the invention is to provide a cut-out box of this nature which is so constructed that the circuit connections can be sealed therein and the fuses cannot be reached unless the circuit is open.

The embodiment of the invention illustrated consists of a box in which is mounted a block that supports a switch and the fuses. The cover of the box is arranged so that it means and it has an opening provided with a shutter which slides backand forth over the fuses. The shutter is arranged to engage with the switch or a portion connected thereto so that when the shutter is moved to expose the fuses the switch will be opened, and when the shutter is moved to close the opening in the cover and conceal the fuses the switch will be closed;

Of the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 shows a plan of a box which embodies the invention, with the cover in place and the shutter closed. Fig. 2 shows an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a plan with the cover removed. Fig. 4 shows a section with the shutter in the cover and also the switch in the box closed. Fig. 5 shows a similar section with the shutter started on its open movement and the switch thrown open.

The box or casing 1 may beof any deshape,that shown being formed of pressed steel with the usual side openings for the entrance of the conductors. One edge of the box shown is turned over soas to form a flange 2 on the front, and one edgeof the cover 3 is passed under this flange. Studs 4 project from near the corners of the cover into the corners of the box.

and is held in position by studs 7 which extend through the coverand slots 8 in the shutter. The shutter has a handle 9 b which it may be opened and closed.

In the box is a block 10 of non-conducting material. This block is mounted on a frame of the box. In the front face of the block 10 is a pocket 12in which are mounted clips 13 for the connection of fuses 14. The block is located so that this pocket is back of the window in the cover that is closed by the shutter. The fuse clips at one end are electrically con-;- nected with terminals 15 to which the ends of the load wires may be attached. The other fuse clips are electrically connected by conductors 16 with the ears 17 between which the switch blades 18 of a common form of knife switch are pivoted. The other end of the switch is adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from the sprin contacts 19 that are electrically connecte with the terminals 20 to which the other service wires may be connected. The switch is located in a pocket on the back or opposite side of the block from the pocket containing the fuses. Just as soon as the shutter is started up so as to expose the fuses, the yoke on its back by contact with the knob on the switch,

throws the switch blades backwardso as to open the circuit. Continuing the opening movementof the shutter swings the switch back so that the yoke will pass the knob. The knob projects forwardly into a slot in the insulating block and the yoke extends rearwardly into the same slot. The invention claimed is:

1. The combination with an inclosing case therein, of a switch mounted in the case, a shutter movable on the cover for opening and closing said window, means on the outside of the cover for moving the shutter, and means so connecting the shutter with the switch that closing the shutter closes the switch and opening the shutter opens theswitch.

The combination witha'n inclosing case having a cover with a window therein, of an insulating block having a pocket in its front face opposite the window in the cover, fuse a shutter movable on the terminals arranged in said pocket, a switch on the back face of said block, connections between the fuse terminals and the switch, a shutter adapted to open and close the window in the cover, means on the outside of the cover for moving the shutter, and means so connecting the shutter with the, switch that the movement of the former will'move the latter. 5. The combination of an inclosing case having a removable cover, said cover having a Window with a shutter adapted to open and close said Window, means on the outside of the cover for moving the shutter, an insulating blockh ving a slot in one edge mounted in the 0 se, fuse terminals on the front of the block opposite the window, a 7nblock into such engagement with a part of the switch that the movement of the shutter throws the switch and-that the cover cannot be removed until after the movement ofthe shutter has fully opened the switch.

6. The combination with an inclosing case having a window in onev side, of an insulating block mounted in the case, a switch mounted on the'block and entirely inclosed by the case, fuse terminals mounted on the block opposite'said window and connected with the switch, a shutter adapted to be moved for opening and closing the window in the case in front of the fuse terminals, and means connecting the shutter with-the switch, said means being the only means for opening and closing the switch.

7. The combination with a casing having a. removable cover with a window in the front and a movable shutter adapted to open and close said window, inclosed within the casing, fuses inclosed within the casing and electrically connected with the switch, and means actuated by the movement of the shutter for opening and closing the switch and for releasing and 100 locking the cover ROBERT C.
