To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE ToMPKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Addison, in the county of Steuben and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nailing- Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in nailing machines and more particularly to a machine for automatically feeding nails to a guiding plunger and the primary object of the device is to provide a machine of this character which is of improved construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and which is extremely efficient in use.
A further object of the invention resides in providing an improved construction for receiving the nails from the magazine or chute and feeding the same to the driving plunger.
Still another object of the invention resides in providing a device which is so assembled that the same may be readily taken apart for cleaning purposes or for the purpose of replacing an injured part when desired.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims. e

In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 designates a casting which is substantially L shaped, one arm of which is designed tubular in effect as shown at 2 to form a barrel or the like. The other arm thereof which is designated in the drawings as 8 forms substantially a housing as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
Mounted to move vertically in the barrel 2 is a plunger 4, the lower end of which is tapered and designed to engage the head of a nail readily while the upper end thereof has a knob or handle 5 mounted thereon. The lower portion of the barrel 2 which has the outline thereof square in cross section has a pair of opposite side faces thereof cut away to receive therein a' pair of spring held jaw members 6. The inner 0pposed faces of these jaws 6 are grooved to provide a central channelway 7 therein for receiving a nail in a manner to be hereinafter more particularly set forth. This channelway 7, however, tapers outwardly toward its upper end and is designed to readily receive the lower tapered end of the plunger 4 therein to spread said jaw embers readily upon the lowering of said plunger to its effective position.
Formed on a portion of the barrel 2 just above the arm portion 3' of the casting 1 is a boss 8 which has an eye formed therein receiving one angularly bent end of a strong wire spring member 9. This wire spring member continues outwardly from the bent end thereof in a direction toward the outer end of the arm 3 of the casting and is looped a number of times as shown at 10 whereupon the same is directed or drawn toward the barrel and looped therearound as shown at 11. The free end of the spring is then clamped to an arm portion thereof by means of a clamp 12. The loops of the spring member are positioned on opposite sides of an upstanding arm or projection 13 formed on the outer end of the arm portion 3 of the casting 1 and in view of the particular position of this spring member 9' with respect to the casting, the upper arm portion of said spring bearing, the loop 11 has a strong tendency to move upwardly.
Extending transversely through the plunger A at a point intermediate of its ends is a bolt or pin 14 which projects through slots 15 formed at diametrically opposite points on the barrel2. These projecting portions of the pin or bolt 1 1 are adapted to rest upon the loop 11 of the spring 9 and said spring,therefore, retains the plunger 4: normally in a raised and inoperative position.
Said plunger is only forced downwardly against the tension of said spring member.
As stated above, the arm portion 3 of the casting 1 forms substantially a housing and this housing is for the purpose of receiving and feeding the nails to the jaws 6 at which point the same are driven downwardly by the driving plunger. This housing or the like 3 is designed somewhat channel shaped in cross section, having one side Wall and top and bottom walls. Thesone end thereof communicates with the interior of the barrel through 'a channel or the like 16. The upper and lower walls of this housing or the like 3 are grooved as shown at 17 to receive therein the upper and lower edges of a sliding plate 18. The upper edge of the plate 18 is offset for a portion of its length as shown at 19 for a purpose to be hereinafter and more particularly set forth and the'side wall of the housing or the-like 3 adjacent its upper edge is also grooved longitudinally as shown at 20 to register with this ofi'set upper edge 19 of the plate 18. Applied to the open side of the housing or the like 3 is a covering plate 21, the same forming anopposite side wall for the housing 3 and a retaining means for the siding plate 18. The upper edge of this covering plate 21 is also offset as shown at 22 similar to the offset upper edge of. the plate 18. This plate is removably applied in position and has near one end a longitudinal slot 23 formed therein through which projects a stud or the like 21 carried on the plate 18. The purpose of this laterally extending stud 24 will be hereinafter and more particularly set forth.
Projecting laterally from the upper end of the'upstanding arm or projection 13 on the portion 3 is a stud 25 upon which is fulcrumed a bell crank lever 26, such fulcrum point being at the junction of the arms of the lever. Connected with the end of one arm of the lever is a link 27 which also has pivotal connection with the aforesaid stud 24: which projects through the slot 23. The
end of the opposite arm 26 of said lever has a link 28 connected therewith, said latter in Fig. 5. Upon release of the pressure on the lever and the plunger 1 the latter will be returned to its initial position as will also the sliding plate 18.
As stated above, the sliding plate is designed for the purpose of feeding nails through the channel 16 to the gripping jaws 6 to be driven therefrom into an object by means of the driving plunger. In order to feed the nails to this device I provide a magazine or the like 30 which is constructed of a pair of spaced plates or the like, adjustably secured in spaced relation to one another by means of the clamping members 31 at the ends thereof. Connected with the outer end of this magazine 30 is a hopper (not shown) which permits the nails to be fed readily to said magazine and the clamping member 31 at the inner end of the latter is removably secured to abracket 32 which is angular in design and has one arm thereof secured to the permanent side wall of the housing 3. The inner end of the magazine is designed to abut the outer side face of the plate 21 and at this point said plate is provided with a vertical slot 33 which terminates at the upper edge of said plate and continues downwardly to a point adjacent the lower edge thereof. This slot 33 admits nails fed from the magazine to be readily received through the plate 21 to abut against the outer side face of the plate 18 which, in its normal position, has its inner edge inwardly of this vertical slot 33. As the nails are fed to this slot 33 from the magazine, the head portions thereof are adapted to rest on the ofl set or cut away portions 19 and 22 of the plates 18 and 21 respectively, while the shank portions of said nails are received directly in the slot 33 to fit against the outer face of the plate 18, as clearly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings.
The plate 21 is also provided with a horizontal slot 3 1 which intersects the slot 33 and the inner face of said plate 21 is reduced in thickness from its lower edge up wardly for a considerable portion of its height to provide a channel way or groove 35. This channelway or reduced portion 35 on the inner face of the plate 21 slidably receives therein an additional sliding plate or the like 36, the latter having at its one end an angular projection 37 thereon which projection has its free end tapered and bent outwardly, to form a spring tongue 38. When this plate 36 is properly applied to the inner face of the plate 21 the spring tongue 38 thereof alines with the horizontal slot 34 in the plate 21 and is designed to pass across the latter as said plate 36 is moved longitudinally of the plate 21. A portionof the upper edge of the plate or strip 36 when the latter is applied on the inner face of the plate 21, registers with the lower Wall of the slot 23 in said plate 21 and formed on said upper edge intermediate the end of said plate is a projection 39 while an additional projection 40 is provided at the end of said strip or plate 36 opposite that having the angular projection 37 thereon. The inner face of the plate 21 is provided with a projection 11 formed in the channelway 35 directly in the path of the member 36. This projection 4-1is, as clearly shown in Figs. 13
and 14: of the drawings, intersected by thevertical slot 33 in the plate 21 and one edge of said projection is adapted to receive thereagainst one edge of the angular projection 37 while the opposite side edge thereof receives thereagainst one side edge of the projection 39 so as to limit the sliding move ment of said member 36 in both directions.
That portion of the member 36 between the projections 39 and 10 receives the stud 2 1 thereover, it being understood that this stud projects through the slot 23 in the plate 21. At a certain position in the movement of the plate 18 this stud 24 will contact with the side edge of the projection 10 and cause the member 36 to be moved outwardly with. the plate 18. The normal position of this member 36 is such as to dispose the free end of the spring tongue 38 inwardly of the vertical slot 33 so that when said member 36 is moved outwardly with the plate 18, said spring tongue will be moved across the vertical slot 33 in the plate 21. By so doing, the one nail which is always positioned in this slot against the plate 18 will be gripped thereby. The tendency will be to force this nail inwardly inasmuch as this tongue 38 is formed of spring metal and in such position further feeding of the nails into the slots will be prevented. Upon a continued movement outwardly of the plate 18 through the complete downward pressure of the plunger 1, the inner edge of the plate will pass out wardly beyond the vertical plane of the slot 33 and the nail which has just been referred to as being gripped by the spring tongue 38, will be forced inwardly against the inner face of the permanent wall of the housing 3, such position being clearly shown in Figs. 10 and 11 of the drawings. Upon release of pressure from the plunger 4, the plate 18 will be returned to its initial position under tension of the spring 9 and in returning, the inner edge of said plate will contact with the nail and force the same through the channel 16 to the gripping jaws 6 which will hold the nail until the plunger is again forced downwardly to drive the same therefrom. It will be understood that when the nail is in a position against the inner face of the wall of the housing 3, as shown in Figs. 10 and 11 of the drawings, the head thereof rests partially upon the upper offset edge 19 of the plate 18 and partially within the groove 20. Upon the return of the plate 18 to its initial position the stud 24L projecting through the slot 23 of the plate 21 will con-- tact with one side edge of the projection of said member 36 thus causing the latter member also to be returned to its initial posi tion and upon such return the spring tongue 38 will be clear of the vertical slot 33 to permit an additional nail from the magazine to be fed to said slot as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings. The device is then in position to have the operation repeated as above de scribed and it will be seen that each time one nail is driven from the device, another nail is simultaneously fed thereto. In order to permit this device to be properly applied to the edge of a box or crate, as seen in Figs. 4, 5 and'6 of the drawings, a gage or the like 4-2 is provided. This gage 42 is of Y-shaped design and removably applied to one face of the lower portion of the barrel 2.
One of the essential objects of the invention is the provision of a device which may be readily assembled or dissembled when desired and in carrying out this object, the various parts are removably applied in position. Such may be readily seen from the drawings wherein bolts, studs, brackets and the like are all removably applied. In order to aid in carrying out this idea, the permanent side wall of the housing 3 has a pair of finger openings 41-3 formed therein. These openings admit of the stud 24 being readily removed from the plate 18 when it is desired to dissemble the parts.
From the foregoing description of the &
construction of my improved device, the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the func tions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A nailing machine comprising an upright barrel, a spring raised plunger therein, a housing extending laterally from and communlcating with the lower end of said barrel, said houslng having a slot in one side,
means for delivering nails to said slot, a'
feeding plate and a delivering plate mounted side by side in the housing and movable toward and away from the barrel, a spring tongue carried by the feeding plate and adapted to feed nails one at a time through 10 the slot into the housing in advance of the delivering plate, and means operated by reciprocation of the plunger for reciprocating the two plates in the same direction.
2.- A nailing machine comprising an upright barrel, a spring raised plunger therein, a' housing extending laterally from and communicating with the lower end of said barrel, said housing having a slot inone side, means for delivering nails to said slot,
a feeding plate and a delivering plate mounted side by side in the housing and movable toward and away from the barrel,
7 a tongue carried by the feeding plate and facing away from the barrel, said tongue being adapted to feed nails one at a time through the slot into the housing, when the delivering plate is retracted, means operable by actuation of the plunger for projecting and retracting the delivering plate, and
additional means for simultaneously projecting and retracting the feeding plate, but for retracting the latter to less extent than the delivering plate. 7
3'. A nailing machine comprising an upright barrel, a spring raised plunger therein, a housing extending laterally from and communicating with the lower end of said barrel, said housing having a slot in one side, means for delivering nails to said slot, a
feeding plate and a delivering plate mounted side by side in the housing and movable toward and away from the barrel, tongue carried by the feeding plate and facing away from the barrel, said tongue being adapted to feed nails one at a time through the slot into the housing when the delivering plate is retracted, means operable by actuation of the plunger for projecting and retracting one of the plates, and coacting stops on said plates, whereby actuation of one willsimultaneously actuate the other in the same direction. 4:. A nailing machine comprising an upright barrel, a spring raised plunger there in, a housing extending laterally from and communicating with the lower end of said barrel, said housing having a slot in one side, means for delivering nails to said slot, a feeding plate and a delivering plate mounted side by side in the housing and movable toward and away from the barrel, a tongue carried by the feeding plate and facing away from the barrel, said tongue being adapted to feed nails one at a time through the slot into the housing when the delivering plate is retracted, means operable by actuation of the plunger for projecting and retracting one of said plates, and a pick up mechanism for actuating the other plate from the plate operated by the plunger.
5. A nailing machine comprising an upri ht barrel, a spring raised plunger therein, a housing extending laterally from and communicating with the lower end of said barrel, said housing having a slot in one side, means for delivering nails to said slot, a feeding plate and a delivering plate mounted side by side in the housing and movable toward and away from the barrel, a tongue carried by the feeding plate and facing away from the barrel, said tongue being adapted to feed nails one at a time through the slot into the housing when the delivering plate is retracted, means operable by actuation of the plunger for projecting and retracting one of said plates, a pair of spaced stops on one plate, and a single stop on the other plate and spaced between the pair of stops, whereby movement of one plate will pick up and move the other plate.
6. The combination with nailing driving mechanism, of a housing extending laterally from and adapted to supply nails thereto, said housing having a slot in one side, means for feeding nails to said slot, a feeding plate and a delivering plate mounted side by side in said housing to slide toward and away from the driving mechanism, means on the feeding plate for feeding nails one at a time through said slot into the housing when the delivering plate is retracted, said feeding plate having a longitudinal slot, a stud projecting laterally from the delivering plate into the slot of said feeding plate, and means operable simultaneously with the driving mechanism for moving said delivering plate toward and away from said mechanism, whereupon the stud will slide freely in the slot of the feeding plate throughout a portion of its travel, but will actuate said feeding plate for the remaining portion of its travel.
