In a lifting jack the combination with the frame, of a lifting bar having a rack thereon, a shaft, driving connections for said shaft to said rack including a pinion meshing with said rack, a ratchet wheel on said shaft, an actuating lever pivotally mounted on said shaft on the inner side of said ratchet wheel, an actuating pawl on said lever coacting with the under side. of said ratchet wheel, a holding pawl on said. frame disposed above and coacting with the upper side of said ratchet wheel, said pawls having outwardly projecting pins thereon, springs for said pawls, a. reversing member pivotally mounted onsaid shaft on the outer side of said ratchet wheel and having a cam on its'upperedge coacting with the pin on saidholding pawl, and a cam on its under edge coacting with said pin on said actuating pawl, a spring acting on said reversing member, and means for ing member in its inoperative position.
3. In a lifting jack the combination with the frame, of a lifting bar having a rack thereon, a shaft, driving connections for said shaft to said rack including a pinion meshing with said rack, a ratchet wheel on said shaft, an actuating lever pivotally mounted on said shaft on the inner side of said ratchet wheel, an actuating pawl'on said lever coacting with said ratchet wheel, a holding pawl disposed oppositely to said actuating pawl, springs for said pawls, a reversing member pivotally mounted on said shaft on the outer side of said ratchet' wheel to coact with both of said pawls whereby they are alternately engaged and disengaged, a spring action on said reversing member, and means for. retaining said reversing member in it inoperativeposition.

In a lifting jack, the combination of an actuating shaft, a ratchet wheel on said shaft, an actuating lever pivotally mounted on said shaft, an actuating pawl on said lever coacting with the under side of said holding said. reverss ratchet wheel, a holding pawl disposed above and coacting with the upper side of said ratchet wheel, said pawls having outwardly projecting pins thereon, springs for said pa'wls, a reversing member pivotally mounted on said shaft and having a cam on its upper edge and stops at the end of said cam coacting with the pin on said holding pawl, and a cam on its under edge coacting with said pin on said actuating pawl, a spring acting on said reversing member, and means for shifting said reversing member to and retaining it in its inoperative position.

holding pawl disposed oppositely to said actuating pawl, springs for said pawls, a spring actuated reversing member pivotally mounted on said shaft to coact with both of said pawls, and means for retaining said actuating member in its inoperative position.

In a lifting jack, the combination of an actuating shaft, a ratchet wheel on said shaft, an actuating lever pivotally mounted on said shaft, an actuating pawl on said lever coacting with said ratchet wheel, a holding pawl disposed oppositely to said actuating pawl, springs for said pawls, a spring actuated reversing member pivotally mounted on said shaft and disposed between said pawls to swing forward and disengage said holding pawl when said pawl is relieved of its load, said reversing plate being engaged by the actuating pawl-0n the lowering stroke of the lever and actuated against its spring to permit the engagement of said holding pawl, said actuating pawl being disengaged on being relieved of its load, by said reversing member, and being held therebv from engagement with said ratchet during the return stroke of the lever, and means for retaining said reversing member in its inoperative position.
7. In a lifting jack, the combination of an actuating ratchet wheel, an actuating lever, an actuating pawl on said lever coacting with said ratchet wheel, a holding pawl disposed oppositely to said actuating pawl, springs for said pawls, a spring actuated pivotally mounted reversing member disposed between said pawls to swing forward and disengage said holding pawl when said pawl is relieved of its load, said reversing plate being engaged by the actuating pawl on the lowering stroke of the lever and actuated against its spring to permit the reengagement of said holding pawl, said actuating pawl being disengaged on being relieved of its load, by said reversing member, and being held thereby from reengagement with said ratchet during the return stroke of the lever, and means for retaining said reversing member in its inoperative position.
