Description

UNI A? LOUIS DOYEN, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
METHOD OF COLORING WOOD.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS DoYEN, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at 2 Rue Chambiges, Paris, in the Republic of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Methods of Coloring Wood, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a very simple method for preparing the surface of wood which is to be varnished waxed or similarly treated with any suitable ingredient or composition and is intended for use in the manufacture of violins, pianos and other musical instruments and also in cabinet work. The improved method permits of giving the wood a golden coloration by means of which the grain and veins of the wood are enhanced and the appearance of the same is improved; moreover when the varnish or other composition has been applied to the wood so treated, the latter has fine tones, reflections or shades which it has not in its natural state. By my improved process I am able to give the surface of the wood lighter or deeper colors as desired from a light golden tone to a brown golden color which is highly desirable for many purposes.
My method consists in submitting the wood from which the sap and resin naturally therein contained have not been removed to the action of vapors of nitrous acid or nitrogen peroxid N0 The sur- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915..
Application filed January 17, 1913. Serial No. 742,689.
faces to be treated are exposed in a hermetically closed chamber to the action of said vapors which are formed in said chamher by any known means. The vapors of nitrogen peroxid may for instance be formed by causing nitric acid to react on clippings of copper. The tones so obtained on the wood surface may be easily varied by simply exposing the wood to the action of the vapors during a shorter or a longer period. In practice the limits to be observed are approximately one minute and twenty minutes.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The herein described process of treat ing wood, which process consists in subjecting wood containing its natural sap and resin to the action of nitrogen peroXid.
2. The herein described process of treating wood, which process consists in subjecting wood, containing its natural sap and resin, in an air tight chamber to the action of nitrogen peroXid generated within said chamber.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS DOYEN.
