DRINKING-CUP."
Application filed October 25, 1913. Serial No. 797.277.

Be it known that .l. Janus (3r. Snauox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy. in the county of Gadsden and State of Florida. have invented new and useful Imprmemenis in Drinking-Cups, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to drinking cups for use individually, and has for an object to provide a simple form of cup, preferably ofan aseptic paper and which can be readi folded from a. blank into a cup shape for. use and will be inexpensive to 'makeso that it can be thrown away after use.
The invention contemplates, among other features, the formation of a cup from a single piece of paper or the like and which is adapted to be used only once, the cup being of a foldable nature so that it can bereadily carried in the pocket.
The invention further relates to a drinking cup embodying various improven'icnts over a patent on a drinking cup granted to me March 15, 1910, No. 952,365.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification. in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the vie s, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the cup is formed; Fi g. 2 is a side elevation, showing the blank partially folded to form the cup; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the completed cup; and Fig. l isa horizontal sectional view taken through the cup as shown in Fig. 3.
' Referring more particularly to the views. I disclose a blank 10 preferably madeof an oiled or waxed paper, and having a series of relatively crossed score lines 11 forming segl(') and 17, with the segmental portion 17 in (u'iposcil relation to the segmental portion l-l aud provided with a cut away part '18, leaving only a small fractionof the cut away portion 17 remaining integral with the blank, the adjacent segmental portions Li and 15 being also provided with a cut awaypart 19 common to both segmental portions. These cut away part-s do not extend through the center of the blank but only within a slight distance thereof. A flap '20 is formed with the segmental portion 16 and projects from the periphery thereof, as shown. Now
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6. 1915. Renewed December 12, 19 .4. Serial No. 376.935.
in folding the blank. the same is folded along one of the score lines 11 so that the inner faces of the segmental portions 13 and 16 will abut, after which the segmental portions 12- and 17 are folded along one of the lines 11', with the outer ,face of the segmental portion 17, and which has a cut away part, lying against the outer face of the sogmcntal portion 16. When this has been accomplished the segmental portions 1-1 and 1.3, abutting against each other due to the folding of the segmental portion 16 on to the segmental portion 13, are folded simultaneously along the score lines 11 and are preferably arranged to lie between the relatively folded segmental iiortions l2 and 1'7 forming a side 21- so that the edge of the side will overlap the segmental portions 14- and 15, as shown, the said edge of'the side being secured to the, said segmental portions by a vsuitable glue 22, it being understood that the segmental portion 13 forms an opposed side 23 and that the segmental portions 1% and 15, lying between the sides 21 and 23, form a continuation of the side 21 and which is glued or secured thereto.
The flap 20 is now bent upon the side 21 to lie against the outer face of the segmental portion 12 and is secured thereto by a suitable glue2-i or other adhesive so that the segmental portions forming the continuation of the side 21 of the lap 20 will securely hold the side 21 in position, thus complct'ing the drinking cup and which now can be opened to disclose a substantially conical compartment adapted to receive the In the use of the device described herein 1 have several advantages over the device disclosed in my Patent No. 952,365 in that with my new device as shown and described herein I find that the drinking cup can be formed without using as much paper as is.
. used in the structure disclosed in my Patent No. 952,365, all surplus of paper or other material being dispensed with by cutting the same out of the segmental portions which subsequently formed the sides of the finished drinking cup. It will be particularly notedthat those portions of the drinking cup which are glued before other portions thereof are exterior of the faces of the segmental sections which form the inner Walls of the compartment adapted to receive the fluid so that the glue for securing the parts of the drinking cup together as mentioned, will not come in contact with the fluid. It will be understood that before the cut away parts 18 and 19 are formed in the segmental portions 17, let and 15 respectively, the blank 10 is of a substantially circular form, having only the flap 2O projecting from the segmental portion 16 thereof and thus by reference to the drawings in the heretofore mentioned patent it will be readily apparent that a large amount of paper is saved in the manufacture of the cup, thus greatly reducing the cost of the same and also providing a neater and more efficient structure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A blank for making a paper drinking cup comprising a partially circular body having a series of radial scores on which the body can be folded to form slightly curved sides so that the body will be of a conical configuration, with a plurality of the sides lying adjacent and one of the sides overlapping the other, the third side being in opposed relation to the first mentioned sides, and a flap formed With one of the first mentioned sides and adapted to be bent across the edge of the overlapping side and secured to the outer'face thereof to hold the said overlapping side and first mentioned side rigidly together.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in p: r-sence of two witnesses.
