EDMON W. KELLER, F GRIPPLE CREEK, COLORADO.
AUTOMATIC TRAIN-STOP MECHANISM.
To all whom it may conce'inz Be it known that I, EDMON W. KELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cripple Creek, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Train-Stop Mechanism and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends improvements in automatic train stop mechanisms,
-holding said lever against the action of a spring and diametricai operating means for tripping said latch to allow the lever to be swung.
lVith these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, and will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a diainetrical view showing that portion of my device which is adapted to be carried by a locomotive, Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of'the signal operated obstacle, Fig. -3 is a side elevation of the obstacle, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the latch carried by the throttle lever.
Referring in detail to the drawing by numorals, 5 designates portion of a locomotive boiler,-6 a pivoted throttle lever, 7 the engineers valve. and 8 the running board of a locomotive. The throttle lever carries a sliding latch. 9 which is adapted to engage a toothed segment 10 and lock said lever in any desired position. This latch may be 'manually operated in the usual manner by Specification'pf Letters Patent.

means of a latch rod 11 and grip, or handle 12.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I provide a base plate .13 of any size and shape, said plate being fixed to the boiler 5 at any suitable place. A lever 14 is pivoted intermediate its ends to the plate 13 and has a long upper arm and a short lower arm. A contractile spiral spring 15 is securely connected to the extremity of the upper arm of the lever and to the base plate 13. The spring tends to draw the upper end of the lever 14 away from the throttle lever 6. A flexible connection 16 is secured at one end to the top of the lever 14 and at its other end to the latch 9, said connection extending through an eye 17 carried by. thethrottle lever directly under the latch. A second flexible connection 18 is also secured at one end to the lever 14 adjacent the upper end' 15, I provide a spring latch 22. This latch is rigidly secured at one end to the base plate 13, extends under the lower end of the lever 1 and has a head 23 which engages one end of said lever to hold the latter in a vertical position. A flexible connection 24 is connected at one end to the latch 22 adjacent the head 23 thereof and at its other end to a trip lever 25 which is pivoted intermediate its ends to a bracket 26 suitably positioned upon the running board 8. A guide pulley 27 is provided so as to cause the connection 24 to exert a downward pull upon the latch 22.
For engagement with the trip lever 25, in case of danger, I provide an obstacle 28 in the forinoi' an elongated bar. This bar is endeavor to run by this obstacle, the latter will engage the trip lever 25 and rotate the same about its pivot so as to cause the latch 22 to be swung downwardly away from en gagement with the lever 1 1. As soon as this happens, the spring 15 will swing the upper end of the lever 14 away from the throttle lever 16 and engineers valve 17, causing the fiexible connections 16 and 18 to actuate the throttle lever and handle 19 respectively. A pull upon the connection 16 releases the latch 9 from the segment 10 and swings the throttle lever so as-to shut ofi the flow of steam to the cylinders of the locomotive. A pull upon the connection 18 swings the handle 19 so as to release air from the train line and apply the airbrakes. It will be understood that the lever 14 may also be made to operate other devices, such as a Whistle and sand-box, if desired. One of the advantages of my device arises from the fact that but a slight downward pull is necessary to disengage the latch 22 from the lever/14, this latch being of a spring material can be readily sprung from engagement with the lever no matter how strong the spring-1,5;
