CLIP FOR HABROW-TEETH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedApr. 6, 1915.
Application filed April 18, 1914. Serial No. 832,798.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS M. FINE and LYMAN BURNAM, citizens of-the United States, residing at Walla Walla, in the county of Walla Walla and State of Washington, have invented new and useful'Im provements in Clips for Harrow-Teeth, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips for harrow teeth and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a clip mechanism of simple and durable structure which is especially adapted to be used for securing harrow teeth in proper position upon the bars of a harrow frame, of iron, steel or other metal. The parts of the clip structure are so arranged as to permit the harrow teeth to be disposed at a right angle to the bar of the frame of a harrow or at an acute angle with relation to the same as desired.
lVith the above object in view the clip structure includes a block in the shape of a rhomb in side elevation said block being provided at its ends with notches adapted to receive the opposite side portions of a [1- between their ends and the said channels A harrow.
having converging side walls. tooth having a rectangular shank is adapted to be positioned in one or the other of the said channels and is held therein by means of the U-bolt hereinbefore mentioned.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of one of the harrow bars showing the manner in which a tooth is secured to the same by means of the clip structure. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the bar showing the clip in edge elevation. Figs. 3 and 4: are detailed views of the clip structure.
The harrow to which the clip structure is especially adapted to be applied includes bars 1 of any suitable metal the said bars being channeled longitudinally. The clip structure includes a block 2 which is rhombshaped in side elevation and which is proof a U-bolt 4E. The bolt 4 passes transversely through the intermediate portion of the bar 1 and is secured in place by means of nuts 5 screw threaded upon the ends thereof. The block 2 is provided at one side with shoulders 6 which are adapted to fit between the opposite edge portions of the bar 1 and which serve to prevent the block 2 from turning with relation to the bar 1 when the nuts 5 upon the bar 4 are tightened. At its opposite side the block 2 is provided with channels 7 and 8. The said channels 7 and 8 extend from edge to edge of the block the channel 7 being disposed at a right angle to the opposite edges of the block and the channel 8 at an acute angle with relation to the said edges. The channels 7 and 8 intersect each other at points midway between their ends and thesaid channels are provided with inclined side walls. The.
chiu iznel 8 is a little deeper than the channe A harrow tooth 9 is adapted to be used in combination with the U-bolt and block hereinbefore described and the said tooth is pro vided with a shank which is rectangular in transverse section. The said shank portion of the tooth is adapted to be received in either one of the channels 7 or 8 and the intermediate portion of the U-bolt 4 bears against the outer part of the said tooth shank and holds the tooth securely in that channel in which it is placed. Therefore it will be seen that the tooth 9 when its shank is in the channel 7 will be disposed at a right angle to the bar 1 and the said tooth when in the channel 8 will be disposed at an acute angle to the long dimension of the harrow bar 1. In view of the fact that the tooth 9 when disposed at an acute angle with relation to the bar 1 will be subjected to greater strain than when it is disposed at a right angle to the said bar the channel 8 is made somewhat deeper than the channel 7 in order to afford greater bearing surface for the block being provided at that side opposite the side thereof at Which the shoulders are inountedrwith a channel adapted to receive a harroW tooth.
2. A harroW tooth clip comprising a block Which is rhomb shaped in side elevation and provided at its ends With recesses, said block being provided at one side With channels which extend from edge to edge of the block and Which are disposed at angleswith relation to each other, said channels intersecting each other at points midway between their ends one of said channels being deeper than the other, the said channels having converging side Walls and a U-bolt having edge portions adapted to enter the recesses of the block.
In testimony whereof We aflix our signatures in presence of tWo Witnesses.
