Description

tinted seat patent Gtihiire.
Letters Patent No. 113,480, dated April 11,1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN PITCHING BARRELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I WILLIAM ANHEUSER, of the city and county of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain Improvements in the Process otPitching Barrels, of whiclrthe following is a specification.
My invention materially consists in a novel mode of pitching barrels by the use of superheated steam.
Formerly barrels have been pitched by beating them in open fire, pouring in the melted pitch and rolling the barrels.
A 'later process, which has been patented, is to blow a current of hot air, which has been heated by passing directly through or over the fire-place, into the barrels for the purpose of-melting the pitch. A tan-blower has been used to that effect.
In this process, however, the air, passing directly through or over the fire-place, is saturated with the flying ashes and the noxious gases escaping from the burning fuel, whereby all these impurities are communicated to the melted pitch.
1 employ a current of steam or air, which I force through a heated pipe or coil of pipes, super-heating the same in the usual manner, but entirely preventing the immediate contact between the fire, smoke; or burning gases and the steam or air which is usedto melt the pitch.
By my process the melting of the pitch, and consequently the pitching of the barrels, is eii'ected in a clean and convenient manner, avoiding the introduction of impurities into the barrels.
In myprocess I do not confine myself to any peculiar shape or form of heating apparatus, butdcclare any form admissable which prevents the immediate con act of the fire with the steam or air used for pitching.
Now, be it remembered that I do not claim the process of pitching barrels with hot air or steam in general; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The process of pitching barrels with pure superheated steam or air by forcing the same through a heated pipe or coils of pipes before passing it into the barrels, preventing the immediate contact between the melting medium and the fire, substantially as above described, and 'for the purposes herein mentioned.
I WM. ANHEUSER. Witnesses:
