JOHN 'H. BRADLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENTFSYLVANIA.
THERAPEUTICAL DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6,- 1915.
Application filed May 28, 1914. Serial No. 841,623.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. BRADLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Therapeutical Deof the lungs, or other afliictionsrehdering rest in recumbent positions diflicult, to sleep and to rest without the necessity of lying in v a prone position. 7
As is well known, any prone posture affects more or lessseriously the action of the heart, andthis structure has been devised with a.view of enabling persons suffering from heart and lung affections to sleep while in a sitting posture.
The structure is also available for use as a table for the serving of meals to the patient; as a desk for reading, writing and amusement, and as a support for medicine or for apparatus used in treating a patient.
These and other features of the invention are more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view showing the apparatus in use; Fig; 2, is a View of the apparatus partially detached from its supporting means, which latter are shown as carried by a bed; Fig. 3, is a front. elevation of the apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and Figs. 4: and 5, are'views illustrating details of the invention.
Theimproved structure comprises a table 1, upon which the armsjof the. patient may rest, and a head-rest 2, as shown in Fig.1. The table 1 isprovided with brackets or supports 3, having hubs 4, adjustably adapted to adjustable. bars 5, which bars may. be carried by posts 6 vertically adjustable "in yoke frames 7 carried by the side rails 8 of the bed, and which are adjustable thereon. The hubs 4: are secured to the bars-5 by looking screws 9, and said bars 5 are detachably connected with the posts 6; the latter having a flattened portion 10 adapted to a notched or slotted portion 11 carried by the bar 5 which also carries a locking screw 12 to secure the parts together when in a connected position.
The several supporting parts of the structure are made adjustable so that the table portion 1 may be raised or lowered, as may be desired, to suit patients of different size, and may also be adapted to beds of diflerent width. The joint formed between the bar 5 and the post 6 forms 'a hinge permit- I ting the table to be moved to positions at greater or less angles to the horizontal, as'.
may be found desirable for the comfort or convenience of the patient when resting or sleeping. The table may be held in such adjusted position by means of the locking screws '12. The bars 5 are swiveled to their notched or slotted portions 11 so that the table may be locked in a horizontal position by moving the joint formed'by the parts 10 and 11 to a position at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1,- as illustrated in Fig; 3.
The head-rest 2 is piv tally connected to an arm 15 adjustable in .a support 16, being held in position by a locln'ng or set screw 17, and this support has a post 18 which is ad-. justable vertically in a socketedsupport 19 detachably carried by the table; being retained in position by a set screw 20 when the desired adjustment is made.
To accommodate different width beds and increase the range of adjustment, the yoke frames may be made as shown at 7 -in Fig. 4, where they are shown as turned outwardly with respect to "the side of the bedframe, When turned inwardly a wider adjustment is provided without the necessity of changing the connection of the bar 5 with the hub 4 of the bracket carried by the table 1-.
Various forms of means for attaching the the latter, no matter what his proportions may be, may be enabled to find a positively comfortable position with-the least efl'ort.
While this structure has been devised more particularly for hospital use, it is not limited thereto, nor is itsuse limited to a connection 'with a bed. With but slight modification; involving no change in the in- I vention, the structureamay be applied to chairs of various types.
I claim: 1. The combination with a bed frame, of
laterally and vertically adjustable brackets carried by the side, rails thereof, a 'detachable table adjustably supported by said brackets, said table forming an arm-rest, and a head-rest centrally disposed with respect to and detachably carried by said table. 5 2. A therapeutic device designed to induce sleep, comprising laterally and vertically adjustable supporting means, a table detachably connected thereto and forming an arm-rest, and an adjustable head-rest 16 centrally disposed with respect to and detachably' carried by said table.
3. The combination'with a bed frame, of a table adjnstably supported'laterally and vertically by said frame, detachable" and detachably carried by said table. 20
In testimony whereof, l have signed my name to this specification, in the'presence of two subscribing. witnesses. I
JOHN H. BRADLEY.
