CHARLES CHEERS WAKEFIELD, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
FORCE-FEED LUBRICATOR.
menace.
Specification of Letters E'atent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
Application filed. May 18, 1914. Serial No. 838,274.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES CHEERS 'TAKEFIELD, a subject of the King of England, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F ores-Feed Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is for improvements in or relating to force-feed lubricators of the type having a plurality of pumps operated through a driving-member common to them all, by an eccentric and each having a separately adjustable device whereby its effective stroke may be adjusted so that its delivery may be controlled independently of the other pumps.
According to the present invention, there is provided in a. force feed lubricator of the type described, a driving-member having a stem sliding in a hollow vertical guide, a plurality of plunger pumps disposed on opposite sides of the stern, a head on the drivingm'ember having a flange which eX- tends laterally to operate as a tappet-plate for the pumps, tappet-members adjustably mounted in the head for operating the pump-plungers and an opening in the head to receive an eccentric whereby the drivingmember is driven.
The invention further relates to a forcefeed lubricator having a plurality of pumps, a separately adjustable member for each pump, and a single device for adjusting simultaneously the adjustable members of all the pumps without disturbing the original adjustment of each to the other, so that where the proportion of lubricant to be delivered to each part has been once decided, the delivery may be increased throughout the whole system while still maintaining the same relative proportions of the delivery to the different parts.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one method of carrying out this invention :Figure 1 is'a central vertical section through the lubricator; Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the casing of the lubricator at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 1, with the interior members in full; Fig. 3 is a plan of the lubricator with one half in section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section through the operatingsmember of the pumps on the line H of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a plan view of a controller for use with the lubricator;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a controller and lubricator.
Same letters indicate the same parts throughout the drawings.
The working parts of the lubricator are mounted in a container A which also serves as a reservoir for the lubricant.
The driving-member of the lubricator comprises a head 13 having in it a slot B which receives the operating cam C of a cam-shaft C mounted in bearings C in the casing A. The head B has a hollow stem B which has a sliding fit in a socket A formed integral with the casing A and constituting a hollow vertical guide for the driving-member. The socket is closed at the bottom where it has a screw-threaded extension A whereby the whole apparatus may be secured to any convenient support.
Grouped around the driving-member B is a series of pumps which are of known construction, and in themselves form no part of the present invention. Each pump comprises a barrel D rigidly supported in the bottom of the casing A and sliding in the barrel is a plunger D The barrel is provided with lubricant inlet ports D which are uncovered by the plunger when in the raised position shown in Fig. 1, so that lubricant can enter from the casing A, which lubricant is afterward discharged past a valve E and into a delivery conduit E when the plunger descends. To further secure the covering of the ports D the plunger carries an outer sleeve D which slides over the barrel and moves up and down with the plunger. This sleeve is shouldered at D and is received in a jaw B formed in a flange 13 on the head B of the driving-member. The flange B is provided with a series of jaws, one for each pumpplunger, so all the plungers can be raised simultaneously by the upward movement of the driving-member through the engagement of the flange with the aforesaid shoulder D on each plunger sleeve.
The head B has a second flange 13 above and parallel to the flange 13*, and in this is mounted a series of adjustable tappets F. Each tappet is screwed into the flange and one end engages the top of the pump-plunger as the tappet descends and at the other end carries a pinion F The pinions are grouped around and all mesh with a central gear-wheel F carried by a shaft G which is mounted in a bearing in the top cover A of the casing. The spindle projects through the cover and above the cover carries a double grooved pulley G. In each groove, an operating cord or flexible wire G is secured, and these wires extend out between rollers G on the cover to an operatingoted at J to the arm H and the cords are fixed to the operating wheel at J so that when the wheel is moved the cords must be positively moved with it. The wheel has a control-handle J and stops J which cooperate with the arm H In the periphery of the wheel or a' disk thereon notches J are provided which cooperate with any convenient form of spring-controlled detent, indicated at J".
It will be seen that the end of the spindle G is stepped into a cup-bearing G* which screw threaded into the head B of the operating-member. This cup-bearing serves a double purpose, as when itis out of the head, it enables the opposed projecting portion Z) to be machined-so that it may pr0- vide a good bearing surface for the eccentric C and the under-side of the bearings; cup G can also be itself machined to con stitute the opposite bearing-face for the eccentric C moreover, this cup-bearing G can easily be sunk further into the head to take up wear.
The operation of this apparatus is as follows z-Before mounting the wheel F in place, it will be seen thateach of the tappets F can be adjusted so that the pump it controls shall deliver the proper proportion of lubricant to the part it is intended to feed. Thus the tappet on the left of Fig. 1 is shown closer up to its plunger than that on the right-hand side so that the left hand pump will give a fuller delivery than the right-hand pump at each stroke. The requisite adjustment having been ascertained, the wheel F is now dropped into position and when connected up bythe operating wires to the operating handle J all the tappets will be held against rotation so that they will remain at the adjustment at which they have been set. As the 'eccentricshaft C rotates the eccentric will constantlyreeiprocate the operating head B so that the flange B first lifts all the pumps to draw lubricant into the pump barrels andthen the tappets F, thrust the plungers down to discharge the lubricant into their respective conduits." If
now the driver comes toa bank or has a pump plungers.
stroke of each pu1npplunger will thus be rendered effective. It will be observed that this increase of the effective operation of the pump-plungers increases the total delivery throughout the system but without varying the proportion of the delivery of one pump relatively to another. Similarly, if the driver requires to decrease the general delivery of lubricant throughout the system the control handle J can be moved in the reverse direction, that is, to the right of Fig. 5, whereupon all the tappets will be drawn farther away from their respective In a casing A a strainer A*' is conveniently mounted, so that when filling the container,
lubricant can be poured through this, and a conduit A may be, formed in one or more of the walls of the container to receive connections A, A whereby steam may be passed through the wall of the chamber to heat the lubricant.
It has before been proposed in lubricators to employ a hollow vertical guide in which reciprocates a Stem and head operated by an'eccentric and having an upper flange carrying an adjustable tappet for effecting the down-stroke of a single pump-plunger, and a lower flange for effecting the up-stroke of the same. Further, it is not in itself new to form the stem of the operating member integral with the head and the hollow guide integral with the oil-container. It will be appreciated that these features are only details of construction for which no claim is made per 86 in the' present application.
' What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
