To all 'zc/mm it may concern Be it known that 1, Jason Lns'rnnnnnonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Ma chines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines of that class in which the rubber shaft is rotated in alternate directions and longitudinally moved at the same time.
The objects of my improvements are to provide a simple, substantial and; durable machine of this class, which shall be highly efficient, and extremely cheap I in cost of manufacture, and in which frictional resistance to the movement of the moving parts has been re need to the ineiniinum.

Referring to Fig. 1, tub 1 may be formed as shown, or may be of any other form, suitable to hold suds, not shown. The interior surface of said tub, may be either smooth or corrugated, as desired. Said tub is provided with bottom 2 and cover The latter has a large square opening 3 formed there through. Said opening is closed by lid 4-, hinged at one of its edges, on said cover by hinges l, and has its free edge detachably secured to said cover by turn buttons l, seen in Fig. 2. Frame 5 has frame base 5 formed therewith, said base being rigidly secured. on lid 4. Said base. the upper portion of said frame and said lid, each have an aperture formed through the central portion thereof. Vertical rubber shaft 6 is passed through said apertures, and is rotatably and slidably mounted therein, as here inafter described. Said shaft has notches 6 formed in one of its edges. Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, said shaft is preferably formed of an X shaped metal bar and has cross head '7 clamped thereon by clamp 8. Said clamp has clamp projections 8 formed on its inner surface, which engage notches 6 for adjustably holding shaft 6, at any desired height. One of the ends of said clamp is detaohably secured to cross head 7 by clamp hook 8' formed with said clamp and passedthrough an aperture in said cross head, while the other end of said clamp is secured to'said Cross head by thumb screw 9,

Referring to Fig. 3, sleeve 7 is formed with cross head 7 and extends therefrc iin, loosely through the previously mentioned apertures in base 5 and lid 4:, for slidably and rotatably guiding the lower end portion of shaft 6. The upper end of said shaft passes through and is slidably guided by journal piece 10, rotatably mounted in the previously mentioned aperture through the upper portion of frame 5. Said journal piece is held in place by the upper end of spiral spring 11, the lower end of which presses upon and is supported by cross head 7. Referring to Fig. 4c, each of the two ends 'of said cross head has a ball 7 formed therewith, and provided with ball jointed supporting means therefor, since they are both alike in construction and operation, a detailed description of one is sufficie t.
Referring to Fig. 5, toggle bar 12 is formed of separable halves secured together by bolts and nuts 12. Said bar has a socket 12 formed in each end thereof. Said sockets are adapted to interchangeably fit on ball 7 and bearing ball 13, the latter being provided with stem 13 formed there with. Said stem is secured in frame 5 as seen in 1. Cross arm ball 7 is held in one of said sockets, while the other socket embraces bearing ball 13, thus providing ball jointed supporting means for cross arm 7 as previously mentioned. Drive block 14 has rose face 14 formed on one side thereof. Said block is secured on the X shaped reduced portion 6 of shaft 6, by nut 15 screwed on the farther reduced and threaded portion 6 of shaft 6. Crank 16 has rose face 16 formed on the inner end portion thereof and spherically shaped handle 16 I 4, after which said lid 18 as indicated by dotted lines.
