LIFTINGr-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
Application filed April 10, 191%. Serial No. 831,029.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOYD J. GAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brookfield, in the county of Tift and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lifting jacks and it has for its object the provision of an improved article of this nature constructed in such manner that a lifting lever may be moved bodily with relation to the standard of the jack to approximate working position, after which the swinging movement of the lever is utilized to lift a vehicle wheel or other object, clear of the ground.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.
in the accompanying drawin Figure 1 is a side View of a jack constructed in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 is a partial perspective view thereof, Fig. 3 is a partial front elevation thereof, and Fig. l is a partial rear elevation thereof.
Li re numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 5 designates a standard that is supported upon a foot or base, 6. The standard 5 is vertically and centrally slotted throughout substantially its entire length as indicated at '7 through which slot a lever 8 works. This lever is pivoted upon the pin 9 which is supported in ears 10 of ahead 11. This head is preferably formed of resilient sheet metal so that its lower portions comprise spring fingers 12 which fingers are adapted to have yielding engagement with relatively long ratchet teeth 13 formed upon the front face of standard 5. The rear face of the standard is provided with ratchet teeth 14: which are reversely arranged with relation to teeth 13 and are much shorter to thereby give a liner adjustment to the throw of lever 8 than is secured in getting the approximate position of head 11. The head 11 comprises the fingers l2 and the ears 10 and the eX- tensions 15 which latter engage about the said standard 5 to hold the head in sliding engagement therewith. A yoke shaped pawl it is pivotally connected with the lever 8 at 17 and as the rear or handle portion of the lever is drawn downwardly this pawl rides over the ratchet teeth let to hold the lever in any position to which it may be moved to hold a load, such as a vehicle axle or wheel ivhich rests upon the forward end 8 of the ever.
It is believed that the operation of the device will be apparent without further remarks however, it may be briefly stated that in use if it be desired to raise a vehicle wheel from the ground, the standard is disposed adjacent the part to be raised and the head is moved bodily while the handle portion of the lever is in an elevated position to thereby bring the forward end 8 of the lever to an approximate engaging position with the part to be lifted. The head is held in this position of preliminary adjustment by the engagement of the fingers 12 with the ratchet 13. When the handle end of the lever is forced downwardly the forward end 8 thereof moves upwardly lifting the part engaged from the ground. At the same time the yoke pawl 16 rides over the ratchet teeth 14: in the manner above set forth.
While the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
i. In a lifting jack the combination with a standard having reversely arranged ratchet teeth upon its opposite faces, of a head slidably engaging said standard said head being made of sheet metal and comprising integral spring fingers adapted to engage the ratchet teeth upon one face of the standard, a lever pivoted to said head and a pawl carried by said lever for engaging the ratchet teeth upon the opposite face of the standard.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a vertically arranged standard which is centrally slotted and which has reversely arranged ratchet teeth upon its opposite faces, of a sheet metal head slidably engaged with said standard and comprising integral spring fingers adapted to engage the ratchet teeth upon one side of said standard, a lever pivoted to said head and a yoke shaped pawl pivoted to said lever and extending across said standard to engage the ratchet teeth on both sides of the slotted portion of the standard..-
3. In a devicev of the character described the combination with a vertically arranged standard which is centrally slotted and which has reversely arranged ratchet teeth upon its opposite faces, of a sheet metal head slidably mounted upon said standard and comprising integral spring fingers extending downwardly from its lower portion, which fingers are adapted to engage the ratchet teeth upon one side of said standard, a lever extending through the slotted portion of the standard and pivoted to said Copies of this patent niay be obtained for'flve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner 0':
