The
bumper, l5, is provided to limit the downward movement of the frictfon grip 'when it touched with the foot. Inlfig. l the fricq tion grip is shown in position to engage the valve stem and maintain the valve closed. In Fig. 2 the friction grip is shown in position to clear the valve stem and permit the valve to open. lf desiredsthe upper portion of the valve stem, 3h., shown in Fig. 4, where it is engageil bv the friction grip, may be slightly tapered inward in an upward di rectilin. With. this construction the friction grip Awould operate as a positive lock against the upward mov l:nent of the valve stem, as it would be within theline of ytravel of the constantly enlarging section of the valve stem. .Vhile the possibility of a friction grip of the ordinary type slipping is remote, the construction shown in Fig. 4 would elim inate any possibility of such slipping. Also, if desired, the adjustable thimble, 18, shown in Figo, may be enmployed to establish a fixed position in which the valve will be closed and the friction grip operative. This is accomplished by using a thimble constitilted of two conic shaped section-s, tapering inwardly in opposite directions from a common base, indicated at a point marked .X he spring actuated friction grip being inoperative while engaging the loner conic shaped section and offering no opposition to the upward or return movement of the valve stem until `the valve stern has made a full stroke downward, and thereby brought the friction grip into engagement with the upper conic section, just above the point X in which position it holds the valve closed,` until it is released in the ordinary way. The thimble is' adjustable, so that its position on the valve stein may be changed to suit the position of the packing nut 8, and that of the cover, l0, either or both of which would affect the relation of the thimble to the friction grip. Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A valve device, comprising a casing, a valve stem mounted in the casing, yielding resistance means for opposing the inward movement of the valve stem, a friction grip for engaging the valve stem, a packing nut, and a support for the friction grip having :in adjustment for regulating the position olf the friction grip with relation to the packing nut,
2l VA valve device, comprising a casing, a
valve stem mounted in the casing, yielding resistance means for opposing the inward movement of the .valve stem, a tread mount ed upon the upper end of the valve stem, av
friction grip for engaging the valve stem, a
packingv nut, and a support for the friction v grip having an adjustment for regulating the -position of the friction grip with rela- 65 tion to the packing nut.
3. A valve device, comprising a casing, a valve stem mounted in the casing, a bonnet having a recess for packing, a packing nut,
yielding resistance means for opposing the '70 inward movement of the valve stem, a frietion grip for engaging the valve stem, and an adjustable support for the friction grip.
4. A valve device, comprising a easing, a
valve stem mounted in the casing, a valve gaging the conic shaped upper section of the thimble when the valve is closed.
5. A valve device, comprising a casing, a valve stem mounted in the casing, a valve disk attached to the lower end of the valve stein, a thimble attached to the upper portion of the valve stem, having upper and Ylower conic shaped sections, taperingl iniiardly'in opposite directions from a common base, and a spring actuated catch for engaging the upper conic shaped section of the thimble when the valve is closed.
6. A valve device, comprising a casing, a valve stem mounted in the casing, a'valve disk attached to the lower end of the valve stem, a thimble attached to the upper part of the valve stern having upper and lower conic shaped sections, tapering inwardly in opposite directions from a common base, yielding resistance means for opposing the inward movement of the valve stem, and a catch for engaging the upper conic shaped section of the thimble when the valve stem has completed its inward stroke.
A valve device, comprising a casing, a
valve stein having a tapering upper portion and a cylindrical lower portion, and a friction grip for engaging the tapered portion of the valve stem.
8. A valve device, comprising a casing, a
valve stem having a tapered upper portion,
a valve disk attached to the lower end of the valve stem, and a spring actuated catch for engaging the tapered portion of the valveJ stem.
valve stem having a tapered upper portion,
-yielding resistance means for .opposing the4 inward movement of the valve stem, and afriction grip fr engagin the vallve stem.
In testimony whereof have hereunto set i 9. A valvedevice, comprising a'casing, a. 115
