Be it known that I, JAMES L. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nut-locks and has reference more particularly to that type of such devices which employ a U-shaped member, the arms of which are adapted to be received into slots formed in the threaded faces of the coperating threaded elements for preventing the same from being rela-` tively rotatably moved.
One of the primary objects of my invention is to provide in a nut-locking device of the above character novel means for preventing the U-shaped locking-member from being displaced from its operative position, whereby positive locking of the threaded members against relative rotary movement will be insured.
Another object of my invention is the provision of simple and effective means for locking a nut from rotary movement on a bolt, and such as may be cheaply and economically manufactured.
A further object is to provide in a nutloclring device of the above described character a construction wherein the threaded end of the bolt is shaped in a novel manner to provide for precluding the U-shaped locking-member from being removed and to permit said member to bey easily removed at will by the use of a suitable tool..
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a nut-locking device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the locking device; Fig. 4L' is a view in perspective of the nut-locking means in operative position as shown in Fig. l; Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of my invention embodied in another form; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the modiiication.
From an inspection of the drawings, referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, and 3, it will be noted that the bolt and nut designated generally by the reference characters 7 and 8 respectively, are of standard type with the exception of the formation of the threaded end of the bolt, which will be The threaded face of the bolt is formed with longitudinally extending slots 9 diametrically oppositely disposed, and the nut is formed on its threaded face with several pairs of diametrically oppositely disposed slots 11, each pair being adapted to register, or to be igirved into alinement, with the slots kin the A U-shaped member designated by the referencecharacter 12 formed preferably of a strip of Vresilient wire, asis clearly shown in Fig. 2 serves as means adapted to cooperate with the bolt and nut members to hold the same from relative rotary movement. The arm portions of the member 12 may be entered in the alined slots and the said member moved toward the bolt until substantially the full length of its arm portions have been moved into the slots to operative position. The function of the U- shaped member is readily apparent, since by the reception of the arm portions thereof in the alined slots the nut is precluded from turning on the bolt. To insure that this nut-locking means may not be withdrawn, I have provided a novel means for holding the U-shaped member in operative position, which means will now be described.
The lthreaded end of the bolt is formed with a reduced head 13 which is shaped to provide a cam-face designated by the reference character 14. rIhe cam-face extends from a-point in proximity to a plane passing longitudinally through the alined slots, away from the bolt at an angle to said plane and is arranged in the path of the crossportion of the U-shaped member 12. `When said member 12 is being moved to operative position said cross-portion will engage the cam-face and be sprung laterally with yrespect to said plane. At the inner end of the cam-face the head 13 is formed with a recess 15 into which the cross-portion of the member 12 will spring as said member is moved to its operative position. This movement of the said cross-portion is obvious since the cross-portion merely returns to its normal plane from which it has been sprung by forcing it against the cam-face 1-1 during movement to operative position. To facilitate springing the cross-portion of the member 12 laterally have iiattened this portion as is shown clearly in Figs. 1 to 4, making the upper end of said member more resilient and susceptible to lateral movement. After the 'said cross-portion of the member 12 has entered the recess 15v said member Will be precluded from being refV tracted by reason of the cross-portion-abut ting the upper vvallof said recess. From the foregoing itis apparent that the nut- 1 locking memberv 12 ispositively locked from being displaced.
