Description

GEORGE E. SGHAETZEL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
LIGHTING DEVICE FOR GAS-BURNERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
Application filed January 2, 1914. Serial No. 809,858.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Gaonor. H. SCHAETZEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Lighting Device for Gas-Burners, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speci cation.
My invention relates to a device for lighting gas burners and, particularly, to improvements on the form of device shown in my prior patent, Number 1,036,727, granted August 27, 1912.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one form of device made in accordonce with my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the ortion of the gas stove to which my device is applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 2-2 of'Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Like marks of reference refer to similar parts in the several views of the drawings.
5 represents the frame of a gas stove which 15 rovided with a plurality of burners 6. T e burners 6 are supplied from a main pipe 7 by means of branch pipes 8. Valves or cocks 9 control'the flow of gas from the main pipe 7 to the branch pipes 8. The pi e 7 also has leading from it a pipe 10 which is threaded in a boss 11 formed upon a casting, 12, which casting forms one part of a two-part casing for containing the pilot light. The pipe 10, as well as supplying gas to the pilot light, serves as a means for supporting the two-part casing. On the interior of the casting 12 is formed a boss 13 which is hollow and communicates with the boss 11. Threaded in the boss 13 is a short sleeve 14 containing the valve seat 15. This valve seat 15 coo erates with a needle valve 16 on the end 0 the stem 17 threaded into the outer end of the sleeve 14. The stem 17 is provided with a knurled head 18 for rotating it.
19 is an opening controlled by a needle valve and forming the pilot light.
Resting on the casting 12 is a second casting 20 formingrthe upper part of the twopart casing. his casting 20 is provided with a number of conical sockets 21 corresponding in number to the burners 6. In the form shown in the drawings, there are four of these sockets 21. Each of the sockets 21 is adapted to receive the inner end of a tube 22, said inner end being referably beveled at 23, as best shown in 1g. 2 of the draw- 1n arch of the burners 6 is provided with burner holes 24 and with an opening 25 adapted to receive a nipple 26. The lower end of this nipple is preferably slightly beveled so as to be driven lightly into the opening 25. The nipple 26 is provided with a lateral passage 27 for discharging gas into the tube 22 and with an upward passage 28 for assisting in carrying the light from the passage 27 to the burner openings 24. Each of the tubes 22 is provided at its outer end with an extension 29 having an opening adapted to fit over the end of the nipple 26. The opening in the extension 29 should fit the nipple rather loosely so that, in placing the tube 22 in position, the end 23 may be first inserted in the socket 21 and then the opening in the extension 29 moved downwardly so as to surround the nipple 26.
30 is a cover late which is held in position on top of tile casting 20 by means of a screw 31 passing through the said cover and entering said casing. This cover plate may be swung aside, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to give access to the pilot light 19.
It will be observed that the top of the casting 20 is so shaped as to provide passages for the heated air of the pilot light, while, at the same time, the pilot light is thoroughly protected from drafts by the two-part casing and the cover plate, 30.
The operation of my device will be readily understood from the above description.
The stem 17 is rotated by means of the knurled head 18 so as to allow gas to escape through the opening 19. This gas is ignited and forms the pilot light which is allowed to burn continuously, the size of this light being re ulated by means of the knurled head 18. on it is desired to light one of the burners 6, the corresponding valve 9 is operated to allow gas to pass rom the pipe 7 to the burner, As the gas is discharged from the burner, a portion of it will pass out of the lateral opening 27 and into the pipe 22, whence it will be conveyed to the pilot light 19. After the gas has been ignited by the pilot light 19, it will flash back through the pipe 22 to the opening 27 and, thence, be carried across by the gas esca ing from 28 to the regular burner ho es 24 o the burner 6.
It will be noted that owing to the connection between the two-part casing inclosing the pilot light and the burners, it is not necessary to have the arts in exact alinement, as the form of joint between the inner ends of the pipe 22 and the socket 21 allow a suiliciently perfect joint between the parts even when the axis of the ipes 22 does not coincide with the axis of t e sockets 21.
It will be evident, also, that my device is readily taken apart for cleaning.
Havin fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent of the United States is:
1. The combination with a plurality of burners, of a casing rovided with a source of ignition, and a urality of tubes, each supported at one end by one of said burners and at the other end having a flexible connection with said casing.
2. The combination with a plurality of burners, of a casing provided with a source of i nition, said casing being provided with a pTurality of sockets, and a plurality of tubes, each supported at one end by one of said burners and having the other end inserted in one of said sockets and forming therewith a flexible connection.
3. The combination with a plurality of burners, of a casing provided with a source of ignition, an upwardly extending ni ple havin a lateral opening carried by each of said urners, and a plurality of tubes ada ted to convey gas from said nipples to sai source of ignition.
4. The combination with a burner, of a. source of ignition, an upwardly extendin nipple having a lateral opening and carrie by said burner, and a tube engaging with said nipple and adapted to receive gas therefrom, said tube extending from said burner to the source of ignition.
5. The combination with a plurality of burners, of a casin rovided with a source of ignition, a nipp e avin a lateral opening carried by each of sai burners, and a plurality of tubes, each having an extension adapted to fit over one of said nipples, the other end of each of said tubes being supported by said casing.
6. The combination with a plurality of burners, of a casin provided with a source of ignition a nipp e having a lateral opening carried by each of said burners, said casing bein provided with a plurality of sockets, and a plurality of tubes, each having an extension adapted to fit over one of said nipples, the other end of each of said tubes entering one of said sockets.
7. The combination with a plurality of burners, of a two-part casing, one part of said casing being provided with a pilot light and the other art with a plurality of sockets, and a p urality of tubes, one end of each of said tubes being supported on one of said burners and the other end entering one of said sockets and forming therewith a flexible connection.
8. The combination with a plurality of burners, of a two-part casing, one part of said casing being provided with a pilot light and the other bem provided with a lurality of sockets, a nipple carried by eac of said burners, a plurality of tubes, one end of each of said tubes surrounding one of said nipples, and the other end en aging with one of said sockets, and a pivota cover carried by the second part of said casing.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal in the presence of the two subscribin witnesses.
