EDWARD A. LANGTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES T. HAYNER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
NON-REEILLABLE BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. e, 1915.
Application led April 4, 1914. Serial No. 829,411.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. LANGToN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non- Reillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable .those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bottles, jugs, ars and similar vessels, and the object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class which having been once filled and emptied of its contents cannot be reiilled or re-used.
The invention described and claimed herewith is an improvement on that described and claimed in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,047,662, issued December 17, 1912, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which y Figure 1 is -a central vertical sectional view of the neck portion of a bottle provided with my improvement ;-Fig. 2 a similar View showing the bottle inverted or partially so, and ;--Fig. 3 a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a the neck of a bottle of the usual or any preferred form, and in which is an annular valve seat a2 forming a passage way a3 adapted to be closed by a valve o normally seated on said valve seat, and comprising a cylindrical top portion or head having a downwardly directed projection b2 which extends below said valve seat. I also secure in the neck of the bottle at a predetermined distance above the valve seat a2 a conical plug c having a cylindrical base portion c2 and a central longitudinal bore or passage c3 which is also preferably tapered from the bottom to the top of said plug, and in said bore or passage are longitudinal ribs c4 any desired number of which may be employed.
In the construction shown, the plug c, or the base thereof, rests on an annular shoulder a4 in the neck of the bottle, and formed in said neck above said shoulder is an annular groove a5 which communicates with an annular groove 05 in the base portion of the plug c, and in order to secure said plug in the neck of the bottle, the grooves a5 and c5 are filled with cement cl, but my invention is not limited to this particular method of securing the plug in the neck, and said plug may be secured in position in any desired manner.
I also provide a closure stopper d2 which is adapted to lit in the top of the neck of the bottle, and which is provided with an annular rim portion als whichrests on said neck, and passing vertically through the plug c and secured centrally in the stopper d2 is a rod-e the lower end of which is provided with a head e2 which, when the parts are assembled into the position shown in Fig. 1, extends to within a very short disltance of the valve b, as clearly shown in said gure.
All the parts of the neck attachment involving the valve b, the plug c, the stopper cl2 and the rod e are preferably composed of glass, porcelain or similar material, and the stopper Z2 is provided centrally of the bottom thereof with a recess or chamber alt adapted to receive the top portion of the plug c, and while the top portion of the plug c is conical in form and the side walls of the recess or chamber d* of similar form, this is not an essential element of the construction, and said parts may be cylindrical in form, if desired.
In assembling the parts 0 and e, the rod e is first passed upwardly through the plug c and secured in the top of the stopper d2, after which the plug c is inserted into the neck of the bottle, and the stop cr d2 is raised and the liquid cement for i ling the grooves a5 and 05 is poured between the neck of the bottle and the stopper d2, while the latter is in a raised position.
In the use of a bottle or similar vessel provided with my improvement, the said vessel is first filled with the desired contents, after which the valve b is dropped into position, and the assembled parts c, d2 and e are then placed in the neck and the plug c secured as above described, and if at any time, it is desired to empty the bottle, or discharge a portion of its contents, the stopper d2 is raised and the bottle inverted or tilted, as shown in Fig. 2, when the parts c, d2 and e will assume the position shown in said iigure, the valve b will drop forwardly or downwardly and the contents 'of the bottle will iow outl through the plug c and into andl around the stopper Z2 and out, as indi-"I` y neck in the bottom of whichis an Vannular valveseat, avalve adapted to be seated on cated by the arrows X.
VThe head e2 of the rod e is valveshaped in form, and the ribs c* in the ybore of the. y
plug c are intendedto prevent the said-head e2V from closing the plug -c whenthebottle Y is'inverted or tilted, as shown in- Fig.
The valve Z) may also be made so as to serve as a float, and if an attempt be made to force liquids into the bottle, while holding the latter in an upright or partially upright position, said valve will'rise to its seat, and no liquids can enter the bottle.
It will be observed that the chamber f,
the valve yZvand the head e2 of the rod e are so proportioned that kthe valve b has but slight movement, and the downwardly directed projection b2 thereof always holdsn said valve in position for operation, and the proportional sizes of these parts may be so regulated that the valve Z) will have even slighter movement than with the construction shown. Y Having fully .described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;4.-
*Abottle or .other vessel said valve seat and rprovided with a downwardly directed projection, a hollow plug se cured in said neck and'having an upwardly directed eXtensionf-a stopper adapted to close said necky and providedfcentrally of the bottom thereof with av recess or 'chamberadaptedV to receive theeXtension of the plug, and a rod VpassedV upwardly through said plug Vand secured in said, stopper and movable longitudinallyY throughv said. plug and provided at its lowerend with `a head normally supported adjacent 'to saidgvalve.
'In testimony that. I claim the: foregoing I i as 'my invention I have signed my namein presence of the subscribing witnesses .this 2nd day of Aprilv 1914.`
