FLY-WHEEL FOR EXPLOSION-ENGINES.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. DASH- wooD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at St. John, Province of New Brunswick, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Vheels for Explosion-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fly wheels for explosion engines.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved fly wheel for eX- plosion engines which may be conveniently grasped for cranking the engine, no matter what the position of the iiy wheel may be.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is an elevation of a structure embodying the features of my invention, the Iiy wheel being shown in vertical central section, the engine body and cylinder being shown in conventional form, the base of the engine being omitted. Fig. II is an inside view of the fly wheel, partially in vertical section, on a line corresponding to the broken line 2 2 of Fig. I looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
In the drawing, similar reference numerals refer to similar parts in both views.
Referring to the drawing, l represents the cylinder and 2 the crank case of an eX- plosion engine. The base is, as stated in the description of Fig. I, omitted. These parts are shown in conventional form.
The crank shaft 3 is provided with my improved fly wheel which, in the structure illustrated, consists of a disk-like web 4 having a hub 5 and a rim 6. The rim 6 has Specification of Letters Patent.

a portion 7 projecting inwardly from the web, and this inwardly-projecting portion is provided with a continuous series of internal corrugation-like linger holds 8. These linger holds are conveniently positioned for grasping the rim in cranking the engine, and as they are continuous, the rim can be conveniently grasped, no matter what the position of the crank may be.
In cranking some engines, it is customary for the operator to grasp the spokes, or to grasp the rim adjacent to the spokes. This is quite a dangerous practice, and many accidents have occurred by reason of the operator being struck by a spoke when the wheel is jerked from his hands, or being unable to release his hold quickly enough owing to the position in which he has to place his hands in order to grasp the wheel. My improved fly-wheel can be conveniently grasped in any position, and there is practically no danger in cranking the engine. It can be securely grasped, and, at the same time, it is easily released, or if jerked from the operators hands, they are positioned so that no serious injury can result.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In an explosion engine, the combination with the crank shaft, of a fly wheel therefor comprising a web and rim, the rim having a portion projecting inwardly from said web, the inner side of said inwardlyprojecting portion being fluted or corrugated to provide a plurality of finger-holds.
2. In an explosion engine, the combination with the crank shaft, of a iy wheel comprising a substantially solid web and a rim provided with internal corrugation-like finger holds adjacent to its inner edge.
