GAN-BODY-FEEDING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST M. AUGENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Can-Body-Feeding Machanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in can body feeding mechanisms and relates more particularly to that type of feeding mechanism used in connection with corn or other filling machines.
lhe object of the invention is to provide a mechanism which will feed cans at a very high speed in an upright position, one at a time, with the open ends up, to a table or platform connected with the filling machine, and to accomplish this feeding without injury to the can bodies.
The improvements furthermore consist in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the 'lrawin forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a mechanism embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, A represents the guideway adapted to support can bodies or other articles in a vertical position, the same being composed of a plurality of angle bars 10, 10 and strap irons 11, 11, the supporting guide way forming preferably the lower end of a gravity feed chute down which the can bodies or other articles are adapted to feed, and said guide way is provided at its inner end with a circular recess or orifice 12 through which the can bodies or other articles are adapted to drop onto a continuously rotatable table or platform 13 connected to the filling machine and provided with a plurality of vane or arms 14, whereby the can bodies may be propelled to a position to be filled. The can bodies or other articles feed down the chute A by gravity and are temporarily restrained from continuing their movement by suitable means, such, for instance, as a vertically reciprocating member 15 having a pair of fingers 16, 16 which extend into the guide way and engage the front side of the can body or other articles, sa d member 15 having a depending arm 17 shdably mounted in the bracket 18, and adapted to be moved up and down by means of a pivoted lever 19, the latter being normally held in an upward position by a spring 20 secured to the lever and to a stationary part of the bracket 18. Also mounted in the bracket 18 are a pair of vertically extending shafts 21, 21 located on opposite sides of the guide way and each-provided with an arm 22 at its upper end, said arms having a path of movement extending over the guide way A and adapted to engage the can bodies or other articles, and so disposed that the arms alternately extend over the guide way. Each of the shafts 21 has secured thereto at its lower end a gear 23, the
' same being suitably geared together by pinions 24, and adapted to be driven from a gear 25 secured to the lower end of one of the shafts of one of the pinions 24, said gear 25 being in turn driven from a gear 26, and the latter in turn driven from a gear 27 preferably mounted on the shaft supporting the table or disk 13 and driven by any suitable means from any moving part of the can filling machine to which the feeding mecha nism is attached. One of the vertically extending shafts 21 is provided at its lower end with a double cam 28 to operate the lever 19 bya pin 29 mounted in the free end of the lever 19, whereby the projections or fingers 16 are reciprocated up anddown twice during each complete rotation of one of the shafts 21.
In operation, the can bodies B feed down the gravity chute and are temporarily held by the stops 16 until engaged by one of the arms 22, whereupon the mechanism is so timed that the stops 16- will be depressed and the can body given a sharp shove which projects the can body to a position over the recess 12, whereupon the can body drops down onto the table 13 andis then transferred to a position beneath the fillin nozzle of the filling machine, it being an erstood that all the parts re properly timed so that the operations may be continued indefinitely as the can bodies feed down the gravity chute.

In a device of the class described, in combination, a gravity feed chute having a horizontal portion at the bottom thereof and. provided with a recess therein through which' the articles are adapted to drop by gravity, a rotating arm having a path of movement above said horizontal portion of the .guideway and adapted to engage the articles therein, and means located adjacent said rotating arm adapted to temporarily prevent the passage of articles along the guideway. j
4. In a device of the class described, in combination, a horizontally disposed can body supporting guideway provided with a recess thereinthrough which the can bodies areadapted to drop by gravity, a plurality of rotating arms-having a path of movement above the guideway and adapted'to alternately engage the can bodies therein, means for temporarily preventing the can bodies from moving along said guideway v and it table located below the recess in the guideway onto which the can bodies .are ilapted to fall after they pass through the recess.
5. In a device of the class described, in-
combination, a canbody gravity feed chute having a horizontally extending portion at the lower end, thereof and provided with a recess through which the can bodies are adapted to fall by gravity, a pair of vertically extending rotating shafts located on opposite sides of said horizontal portion of the guideway, each of said shafts being provided with a projecting arm adapted to alternately engage the can bodies while in said guideway, and means for'temporarily preventing the can bodies from moving along the guideway, said means comprising a vertically reciprocating member adapted to be moved into and out of the guideway.
6. A timing and feeding mechanism of the character described including, in combination: a gravity feed chute having a horizontal portion at the bottom thereof;
means for temporarily stopping articles on said horizontal portion as the same come down the gravity feed chute; a rapidly rotatable member having a path of movement above said horizontal portion adapted to engage the articlesafter having been stopped by said means, to project them forwardly; and mechanism for removing said means from in front of the articles before said rotatable member engages the latter, substantially as specified. A timing and feeding mechanism of the character described including, in combination: a horizontal guideway having a recess therein through which articles are adapted to fall; means adapted to be moved into the path of articles moving along said 'guideway to thereby temporarily arrest the same; rapidly movable members having a path of movement over said guid'eway and adapted to alternately engage articles there: in after the same have been arrested by said means, said members serving to project the articles to said recess; and mechanism for timing the operation of said means and said movable members whereby said means are moved to an inoperative position prior to the engagement of the articles bysaid members, substantially as specified.
