SWITCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar, 30, 1915 Application filed February 17, 1912. Serial 110,678,193.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RAY P. FARRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oxnard, in the county. of Ventura and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Switch-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve- ,ments in switch boxes for'electric wiring.
5 and it is the primary object construct a switch thereon additional between the studs of 'or otherwise provided In carrying out my invention it is my primary object to provide a switch. box having means whereby the box may be attachedto a studding, the said box being further provided with means whereby laths may be easily and quickly connected therewith, thus obviating the necessity of the employment-of a board or the like which is provided-with an opening for'the reception of the switch box.
It is a further-obj'ect of the invention to box having a normally open side, the edges of the said side being of such a. formation boxes or sections of boxes, so that the main or supporting box may carry a plurality of auxiliary boxes, thus changing the device into a gang box.
With the above objects in view and others of a s1milar nature as will hereinafter be set forth, the invention resides in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of elements set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a switch box constructed in accordance with the present invention, the side plate being removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the side Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the. device illustrated in 'Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the removable side plate.
As iswell known in the art, switch boxes for electric conduits are sustained in' place partitions through the medium of a board which is secured between two of the said studs. This board is sawed with an opening for the'reception of a box, the ordinary box being formed with perforated ears through which are passed screws for retaining the box upon the board. It will be'readily understood that by such a construction a great amount of time and labor is expended,
vided with an open side side plate or a box section may be readily P as to receive and retain arranged at a right plate in position.
of the. present.
box which is pro- .wherein either a invention to construct a inserted, the said box having angularly arranged flanges provided with openings adapted to receive nails or the like to permit of the box being securely attached to a stud, while the said removable side plate is provided with pockets for the reception of laths, thus dispensing with the board commonly employed for sustaining the box.
eferring now to the drawings in detail, the'numeral 1 designates This box 1 embodies a top, 2, a bottom 3 a rear or back 4 and a side 5, as well .as a removable plate for the open side, as will hereinafter be more fully set forth. The closed side 5 is formed with ears 6 and 7 the same extending above the top 2 and below the bottom 3. The side 5 is further provided with a flange 8, the same being preferably integrally formed with the box and being angle to the ears 6 and he ears, as well as the flange are, provided with openings 9, the said openings being adapted to receive securing elements, such as nails whereby the box may be re tained 'upon a stud 10. The side 5 beyond its connections suitable openings 12 for the reception of the electric wiring, while the back 4.as well as the bottom 3 are provided with similar openlngs designated by the numerals 13 and 14,
respectively. The back 4 is formed with projections 14', the same being adapted to serve as stop members for the removable side or for the sections which are employed for making a gang box as will hereinafter be more fully described. i
The longitudinal edges of the top 2 and bottom 3 are curved to provide substantially semi-cylindrical ways, designated respec tively by the numerals 15 and 16. The material from which the box is constructed is preferably of a resilient metal and the said ways 15 and 16 are centrally slitted to pro vide the inturned-spring tongues 17 a1id\18.
The numeral 19 designates the side plate for the box, this plate is constructed of a single piece of resilient material comprising my improved box.
with the stud is formed with the material between the said slits being bent outwardly to form lugs21, the plate is cenngitudinally extendslits, and the metal between the said slits is bent to provide a sto 22. The stop 22 is arranged centrally o the plate and immediately between the lugs 21, so that the trally provided with said step will provide a support for the completing the pockets for the laths 23- and 24:. The plate 19 has its longitudinal edges inclined from the offset members 25 and 26, and the said vided with cut away 29 and 30, the latter by the spring tongues inclined edgesprovide plate is further proor depressed portions adapted to be engaged 17 and 18 while the meanswhereby the said plate may be readily within; the
ways 15 and'16.
. to close theopen side of ing right angular stamped lugs,
What is claimed isi In combination witha inetalhc switch box having an open end and open side, a plate removably mounted upon the box so as said box, an outwardly projecting upper and lower stamping being step shaped in contour and mounted upon said plate,'an outwardly extending right angular stamping formed midway between said step-shaped members, and an upper and lower pair of outwardly extendeach pair of said lugs disposed midway between one of said first mentioned step like stampings and said last named right angular stamping and being spaced apart on either si e of the latter whereby to receive a lath. q
