CLOTH-CUTTING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERIGK J CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cloth-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cloth cutting machines of both the reciprocating and the rotary knife type. In the former, as commonly constructed, there is suspended from the frame of the machine in advance of the knife a presser foot which is adapted to rest upon and travel along the cloth in advance of the knife and hold the cloth in place, while in the latter or rotary knife type, no presser foot is generally used, but a knife guard is required which is suspended from the frame of the machine in advance of the knife to prevent the hand of the operator from coming in contact with the knife. It is necessary that both the presser foot in the reciprocating knife machine 7 and the knife guard in the rotary knife machine be adjustably mounted on the frame of the machine so that they can be raised and lowered to accommodate whatever thickness of cloth the machine is to cut.
This invention relates to the means which are employed for adjustably securing this knife preceding member, whether presser foot or knife guard, to the frame of the machine and for raising and lowering it thereon, and the object of this invention is to mount the knife guard or presser foot on the frame of the machine in such manner that it can be easily and quickly adjusted by the operator of the machine to accommodate any desired thickness of cloth and will automatically lock in such adjusted position so that the necessary adjustment can be readily made by the operator with one hand.

The invention is shown in the drawings as applied to the knife guard of a rotary knife machine of standard type which comprises a base plate A, a standard B secured thereto and supporting the frame G, a rotary knife D and a motor E which is carried by the frame and is geared or otherwise operatively connected with the knife. In front of the machine is hung the usual electric lamp F for lighting the pattern in front of the knife. All of these parts are common in rotary knife machines and may be of any suitable and desired construction.
G represents the knife guard which may be of any suitable construction. The guard shown comprises a depending curvedportion 9 which is adapted to move over the upper surface of the cloth and an upwardly extending portion 9 in advance of the front edge of the knife which cooperates with the lower portion 9 to form a guard for the front edge of the knife. The guard G is provided with an upright rod or bar 9 which is slidably mounted on the frame of the machine and can be moved up and down thereon for raising and lowering the knife guard, and this invention relates to the means which are employed for accomplishing this and which are constructed as follows: H represents a support or bracket which stands upright at the front of the machine and may be made integral therewith or may be secured to the frame G of the machine in any suitable manner. In the construction shown, this bracket is separate from the frame of the machine and has upper and lower ears or extensions k and h which are secured to the frame O by screws 72 h. This bracket is provided adjacent to its upper and lower ends with suitable ways or bearings I for the upright rod 9 in which this rod is adapted to slide vertically, and these Ways are closed by plates 6 Which retain this rod in sliding engagement there- With.

I claim as my invention:
1. In a cloth cutting machine, the combination with the frame of the machine, of a supporting bracket secured to said frame, an upright rod mounted to slide vertically in said bracket, a member carried by said rod 'and'arranged in front of the knife of an adjusting lever pivoted on said bracket "and connected at one end with said rod for raising andlowering said lniifepreceding member, and means for locking said lever in its adjusted positions, substantially as set forth;
2.
