My invention consists of a dumb waiter,.

elevator or the like provided with doors leading to the shaft or chute of the same, said doors being adapted'to be operated by each other; so as to be opened and closed simultaneously, and mounted in novel frames formed of members preferably of` metal, the device in its entirety being ready to be set up at the place of the chute which said doors are to occupy, and other details areprovided, the construction and operation of which beinghereinafter set forth.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated Vin the .accompanying drawing, but the important instrunientalities thereof 'may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention I.is not limited to the specific details shown and described.

ln order to connect the chains 13 with the ears 15, the lower ends of the former are attached to the eye bolts o'r screw rods 19, the latter being adjustably fitted in said ears and retained 1n position by the nuts 20, on opposite sides of said ears, as most plainly shownin Fig. 5.

It will be seen that when the doors are to be opened to admit access to vthe adjacent portion of the shaft ofthe dumb waiter, the upper door is raised when owing to the chains13 being connected to the same and the-lower door, the latter is-caused to descend, thus separating the doors'and consequently opening the' same. These spaces constitute pockets the upper one of which receives the upper door when opened.,` and the lower one of which receives the lower door when opened, ythe pockets thus being Within the frame and not entering the dumb-waiter shaft.

The frames, doors and other appurtenances of the device are formed lof metal which are'light, strong, durable and fireproof and the bottom of the frame will be on the floor line of a basement or apartment, so that the doors will be suliciently above said line so as to be convenient of access for operation thereof, it` being evident that either door may be operated to cause motion of the other door in order to open `or close the doors simultaneously.

The shelf 8 and upper cross bar 7 of the interior frame connected with the side stiles of the latter, as has been stated, serve also to brace said stiles and consequently the inner frame between the ends thereof.

The front of the top pocket of the frame will be properly covered by the front wall of the chute ldownto the cross bar 7, and the frontof the bottom pocket of said frame will be properly covered by the frontwall vof the chute: up to the shelf 8 vso that said openings willnot appear in front. A

2. A' dumb waiter having an exterior frame composed of angular-side` pieces, a

cap, and a sill; vertically-extending channelshaped guides ymounted in said frame, means for connecting said guides Withsaid frame, slidable doors mounted in the said guides, the length of said frame and guides being greater than the combined height of the doors in closed position, forming pockets respectively at thetop and bottom of said frame to receive said doors respectively in the open position thereof, ears on the lower door extending laterally therefrom and passing freely through the central walls of said guides, exible members 'attached to said ears adapted to pass over 'pulleys on said guides and to be connected with the upper door, a crossvbar lat the base of the upper pocket, and a shelf at the top of the lower pocket, said shelf and cross bar hav- 'ing their ends connected respectively with said-channel-shaped guides and serving also to brace the latter vbetween their ends.V
