application filed February 3.8, wie.
Be it'known that l, THOMAS l. Peron,
.l r., a citizen o the United States, residing at South Oran e, in the county of Essex and State of New ersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Belt Clasps or Buckles; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refern ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, `which form a part of this specification. This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in clasps or holding devices; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to a novel clamping means or holding device, in the form of a buckle which is especially adapted for use in connection With the respective end-portions of belts, such as are Worn with garments.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and 'simply-constructed clasp or fastening for belts and other uses, which is readily attached to the belt or strap, and the clamping member of which, When-in engagement with the free end-portion of the belt, firmly and positively clamps or grasps the said end-portion of the belt, so that no matte'r how great the pull or strain, the clasp or `fastener Will not be` come displaced, but can be readily removed or adjusted b'y the application of a slight lifting pressure upon the back ofthe main body of the buckle, so as tofthereby provide a. sufficient disengagement of the clamping member with the belt-portion, so as to pen' i't the latter to be slid back and "Forth upon the back of the buckle for proper adjustment, or for the removal ol the belt from the body of the wearer.
Other objects of the present invention will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan vienr of a belt-clasp or Speccation of Letters Patent.

fastener made according to the principles of the present invention, said vieiv showing in connection therewith, and in plan, the two end-portions of a belt with which the clasp or fastener is employed; and Fig. 2
is a side elevation of the belt-clasp or fasvback of the main body of the clasp, and the other end-portion of the belt being represented in its clamped relation with the said clamping member. Fig. 4 is a similar sectional representation of 'the various parts shown in said Fig. 8, but illustrating the pivoted .clamping member in its disengagedv relation With the free end-portion of the belt. F ig. 5 is a rear face view of the beltclasp or buckle in its detached relation from the belt or strap. Similar characters of reference are employed in 'the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring nowK to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character l indicates a. complete belt-clasp or buckle showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention, andthe same'comprises a suitably formed and suitably ornamented faceplate, as 9, which is preferably outf Wardly convexed, substantially as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and l nf the drawings. The said face-plate isformed upon itsrear face and at its longitudinally extending marginal edge-portions with rearwardly extending marginal rib-like il anges, as 3, the respective flanges 3 being connected at or near their respective end-portions by means of laten ally extending plates or bar-like members '4 and 5, one oi said members, as 5., being loop-shaped clamping memberv 8. At a pomt'between the said ears or lugs 9 and ilo After proper adjustment,
the part 10 of said member 8, and to pro ject inwardly in a direction toward the back of the face-plate 2, is a clamping jaw 11 which is formed with a suitably shaped grasping edge, preferably chamfered, as at 12, so as to be adapted to be brought into tirar biting and retaining engagement with the free endportion of the belt in the inanf ner and for the purposes to be presently described. 4
In applying the belt-clasp or buckle to the belt, the one end-portion 13 of the belt is inserted in the opening,r of the loop-shaped member 8 and portion 14 of said member S. The tree endportion 15 oi' the belt 'is then passed over the laterally extending plates or bar-like members l and 5, so that said portieri of the belt will lie directly against the rear face of the face-plate 2, substantially as illustrated in Fig. ot' the drawings. The free slidable arrangement of the belt-portion l5 ,upon the back of the buckle, and between the guiding langes 3 and above the said plates or bar-like members 4 and 5 allows for a quick and easy adjustment of the belt and buckle about the body of the wearer. the loop-shaped member 8 automatically moves in the direction of the arrow thereby moving the clamping jaw 11 into its biting and clamped retaining engagement' with the endi as clearly represented portion 15 of the belt,
in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
It will be fully evident from an inspection of said Fig. 3 that no matter how. great a pull is exerted in the direction of the arror.7 y upon the end-portion 15 of the belt, the more securely will the belt-portion be clamped between the rear ol the face-plate 2 and the clamping` edge 12 of the clamping jaw 11, as Will be clearly understood from an inspectionof said Fig. 3 oi the drawings.
To rc-adjust the belt upon the body of the wearer, or to remove the belt, all that is necessary is for the operator to place the thumb back of thc'ifacc-plate of the buckle and press slightly in an outward or forward direction, whereby the clamping engagement of the jaw llwith the belt-portion 15 becomes broken, so that the buckle may be adjusted with relation to the "ree'eri'd-poi tion of the belt, or that portion of the belt may be entirely removed from the buckle.
From the foregoing description of the present invention it will be clearly seen that' I have devised a simply constructed beltclasp or buckle which can be cheaply made, is readily adjusted with relation to the belt, and the grasping and pulling` action of which is most positive, no matter how great thepull or strain. so that the belt will be properly retained in its secured relation about the body ot the wearer.
securely fastened about the,
y members vhinged portion of the Lasserre said bar-like members, combined with al loop-shaped member to which an end of a belt-strap is adapted to be attached, pintlereceiving ears extending from said loopshaped member into registration with the pintle-receiving ears of said bar-like member, a pintle extending through the said registcring ears, all arranged sothat'the said loop-shaped member is pivotally connected with relation to the said faceplate at one laterally extending edge portion thereof and is adapted to be projected longitudinally beyond the said edge-portion oir' the face plate in the clamping position, and a clamping means connected with the said loop shaped member and adapted to be moved against a belt-portion arranged back of the said face-plate for pinching the belt-portion against the laterally extending marginal edge-portion of the, face-plate, substantiall asand for the purposes set forth.
In a' beltbuckle, a main body comprising a conrexly termed facelate and longitudinally extending guide anges proje'cting from the rear face of said faceplate, at the marginal edge-portions thereof, banlike members connected with the respective endportions of A said guide-flanges, said bai l ke extending laterally across the rear face of said face-plate and'forming with the respective end-portions of the face-plate strap-1'eceiving and guiding spaces, pintlereceiving earsconnected with' one of the laterally extending marginal edges of one of sa d barflile members, combined with a loop-shaped member to which an end of a belt-strap is adapted to be attached, pintlereceiving ears extending from said loopif, banlike shaped member into registration with the 1 pintle-receiving ears of said bar-like membei, a piutle ,extending through the said `registering ears, alll arranged so that the said loop-shaped member ispivotallyv connected with relation to the' said face-plate at one laterally extending edgeportion thereof and is adapted to be projected longitudif nally beyond the said edge-portion of the face-platein thevclampino' position, and a clamping jaw extenda; lngularly from the said loop-sharp;
