To all whom it may con cern Be it known that I, ADoNIRAM J. COLLAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yreka, in the county of Siskiyou and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ditch-Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ditch gates, and particularly to a type of gate which is intended for use in measuring water discharging from canals, ditches, reservoirs, or the like.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a ditch gate which is particularly adapted for measuring or delivering a constant volume of water from canals, reservoirs, or the like, in which the water level is liable to vary, or, in other words, where the water head in the source of supply may change at any time. Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the gate to increase or decrease the volume or flow of water through same.
Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompany ing drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of the gate showing its position in a ditch. Fig. 2 is a plan view of same.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a canal, ditch, reservoir, or other source of water supply. Connecting said source of supply with the consumers irrigation ditch or flume is a pipe 2. Suitably secured on the inner end of said pipe is a swivel elbow 3, or like device, to which a rectangularshaped funnel extension or gate 4: is secured. Positioned at the sides of the open end 5 of the gate is a pair of floats 6 and 7, one being on each side, which are connected together by a rectangular bracket member 8. Secured on the inner sides of said floats is a pair of guide arms 9 and 10, the inner ends of which are pivotally secured to the gate, as at 11 and 12. The gate proper is adapted to be raised or lowered, with relation to the floats, for purposes hereinafter to be described. This is accomplished through the following means:
13 indicates a screw rod, the lower end of which is secured to the top of the gate, as at 14. The screw rod extends up through a nut 15 which is turnably mounted in the bracket 8, and a hand-wheel 16 is secured to the nut for the purpose of turning the same.
In actual practice the operation will be as follows: By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that opening 5 is rectangular in shape and that this opening may be raised or lowered, with relation to the water level, through means of rod 13 and nut 15. If it is desired to deliver a flow through pipe 2 corresponding to three miners inches, it 1s only necessary to turn the wheel 16 until a scale 17, having graduations thereon indicating the flow of water through same, registers three miners inches. A constant flow will thus take place through the opening in the gate corresponding to three miners inches, and this is permitted to discharge through pipe'2 to the consumer. Any rise or fall of level within the canal or ditch will not aflect the flow through the gate in any manner as this is automatically supported in a constant position, with relation to the level of the water, through means of the floats 6 and 7. A constant flow is thus delivered to the consumer regardless of any variation in the water level within the source of supply. A smaller or greater quantity of water can be delivered by adjusting the position of the gate by lowering or raising the same by means of the rod 13 and the hand-wheel 16, as previously described. Practically any amount of water may thus be delivered to the consumer regardless of any variation of level within the source of supply. Means have also been provided for preventing unauthorized persons from tampering with the gate or changing the flow through same. This is accomplished by locking the hand-wheel 16 against movement with a padlock, or other suitable means, indicated at 18. A further means has also been provided which will prevent anyone from weighting the floats after the gate has once been adjusted. For instance, it would be very easy for anyone to place a suflicient amount of weight upon the floats to cause these, with the connected gate, to be lowered a considerable distance with relation to the water level, thus in creasing the flow through the gate without operating the hand-wheel 16. This is prevented in the present instance by inclosing the gate, with connected floats, in a box-like structure B.
