To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUST V. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logcabin, in the county of Larimer, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in handles, and particularly to detachable handles.

One object of the invention is to provide a simple detachable handle which is particularly adapted for drinking cups and especially cups which have beads around the mouths thereof.

Another object is to provide a handle which may be readily attached to or detached from a drinking cup, and which, when detached, can be readily placed within the cup and retained against loss.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cup showing my handle attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4i of Fig. 3 looking toward the cup.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents a cup which is formed with the rolled rim or bead 11 at the mouth thereof, and in connection with which my invention is particularly adapted for use. The handle comprises a grip portion 12 which has a downturned portion 13 at the upper end thereof, this downturned portion engaging the inner face of the upper end or mouth of the cup. Secured to the grip portion adjacent the member 13 is a depending block 14; which engages against the outer face of the rim or head of the cup. Secured to the lower end of the grip portion is an upwardly extending flat steel spring 15, the upper end of which engages under the bead 11. Carried by the spring is a suitable knob or finger-piece 16 for pulling the spring outwardly to disengage the upper end thereof from beneath the bead 11.

When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, the upper portion of the grip 12 rests on the upper side of the bead, with the bead confined between the downturned portion 13 and the block 14:. This positively limits any movement of the grip toward or away from the cup. The upper end of the spring 15 hearing against the underside of the bead prevents any lateral rocking movement of the handle, or any vertical movement thereof. The handle is thus firmly held on the cup.

To disengage the handle from the cup, it is only necessary to grasp the knob 16 and pull the spring 15 toward the grip portion so that the end clears the outer face of the bead, whereupon the handle can be readily moved upwardly to slip the same from engagement with the cup.

When the handle is not in use, the same may be placed within the cup and the cup folded, so that the handle will be at hand yvhen needed and be prevented from being What is claimed is:

The combination with a cup having a bead at the mouth thereof, of a detachable handle comprising a grip portion in the form of a loop, a downturned finger formed on the grip portion engaging within the mouth of the cup, a lug carried by the upper end of the grip portion adjacent the base of the finger and spaced therefrom, for engagement outwardly of the bead, and a vertically disposed resilient member carried by the lower end of the grip portion and extending upwardly under the head, said resilient member being provided with a finger-piece for withdrawing the member from under the bead.
