residing at Newark, in the county of Essex, .lState ofNew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Washers; and I do hereby declare the following:to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relatesto a window washer. An .object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will apply soapy water to the window in such a .manner that the window may be thoroughly scrubbed during the operation of the device.
A. further object of the invention is to applyclean water .tothe window in such man- .ner that the soapy water which has been previously applied will be washed therefrom.
.A still further object is to provlde means for-applying the waterin its different states simultaneously.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses,
my invention comprises the .combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and subsequently .claimed.

Referring to the drawing by reference characters wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views, my device comprises an elongated body portion 1 which is U-shaped in cross section and which has an upper plate 2 and a lower plate 3 forming a chamber 1 therebetween. A bracket 5 is secured to the rear portion of this member 1 in a dished out inclined portion by screws 6 and the said bracket has a pair of downwardly extending arms 7 of arcuate formation and having a plurality of projections 8 formed thereon. Pivoted to the arms 7 and between the same isa ferrule 9 of hollow formation and having slots 10 in its sides. Slidably mounted in the ferrule 9 is a T-shaped member 11 having a handle 12 extending outwardly through one of the slotsand projections 13 extending outwardly through two diametrically opposite slots. A coil spring 1 1 is mounted on this T-shaped member 11 and is secured at one of its ends, as at 15, to the ferrule 9 and at its other end to the T- shaped member, as at 16. This coil spring normally tends to hold the projections 13 into engagement with the arms 7 so as to be located between certain of the projections to maintain the ferrule and the body member 1 1n a predetermined relation. The T-shaped member, however, may be operatedby means of the handle 12 to be withdrawn from its locked position and then the ferrule may be adjusted with relation to the body portion. A handle 17 is securedin the ferrule and extends therefrom.
In the chamber 4 is located a piece of soap 18 and on the front face of this soap and the front face of the body portion 1 is located a piece of felt or other suitablematerial 19 which extends over and backwardly upon the plates 2 and 3 and is secured thereto by a clamp 20 having a D-shaped portion 21 which extends around the body portion. ()nthe lower part of this D-shaped member is an enlargement 22 which has a plurality of threaded apertures 23 extending therethrough and in these threaded apertures are mounted a plurality of thumb screws 24 which are arranged to bear against a plate 25 mounted on the upper surface of the enlargement 22 to cause the plate to bind the felt on the plates 2 and 3 to hold the same in position.
In order that the soap may always be kept in contact with the inner face of the felt a plate 26 is slidably mounted in the chamber 4 and is adjustable by means of a thumb screw 27 which extends through a threaded aperture in the body portion 1 and is adjustable therein. When the soap becomes used the thumb screw 27 is screwed inwardly gradually so as to maintain the soap in contact with the felt 19.
On the upper plate 2 is mounted a cylindrical tank 28 having a series of nozzles 29 extending therefrom toward the front face of the felt 19. A U-shaped supply pipe 30 is connected to this tank and has a stop cock 31 at the juncture of the arms thereof. Connected to this pipe 30 is a fiexiblepipe 32.

An additional stop cock 34: is interposed in this pipe 32 so that water may be shut off from the tank 28. e In order that water may be applied to the soap the lower surface of the plate 2 is'recessed, as at 85, and at the rear end of this recess is located a valve 36, which valve extends upwardly and is connected to the lower part of the tank 28 so that water may be forced from the said tank into the recess 85 and applied to the soap. A valve operating stem 37 is connected to this valve and extends through the rear face of the body portion 1 and terminates in a finger piece 38 for operating the same.
In operation the handle is adjusted to the desired position with relation to the body portion 1 and soap is placed in the chamber 4: and the stop cocks 31 and 34c opened so that water will be forced into the tank 28 and ejected from the nozzles 29. At the same time the valve 36-is open and water allowed to flow into the recess 35 and onto the soap. As the felt 19 is drawn upwardly upon the window soapy water is applied to the said window through the felt from the chamber 35, it being of course understood that the felt has become saturated with soapy water. On the downward movement clean water is applied above the uppermost portion of the felt from the nozzles 29 and the soapy water thus effectively washed from the window.
From the foregoing description it may be seen that I have provided a device which will effectually wash a window with soapy water and during the downward movement of the device clean water will be applied so asto wash the soapy water previously applied from the window.

In a device of the class described, a body portion of U-shape in cross section, a chamber formed therein adapted to contain a cake of soap, a plate slidably mounted in said chamber to adjust the soap therein, a thumb screw to operate said plate, a piece of felt secured to the body portion and extending over the open side of the chamber, the said body portion having a recess formed therein, a tank mounted on the body portion,
a pipe having a valve connecting the tank and the recess, means for ejecting water from the tank above the said recess. and a handle adjustably connected to the body portion.
