TBE-BENDING MACHINE.
Application led January 21, 1915.
To all @.071 om t may concern Be it lrnoivn that I, ROY F. REDDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, St. Clair county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube-Bending Machines, of Which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to machines for bending steel tubing into various shapes and has for its prime object the production of an improved machine of the character described Which shall be largely automatic in operation and by aid of which the out-put of the operator for a given period may be greatly increased with a consequent reduction in the cost of production of various articles.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals refer to like Vparts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the complete machine; Fig. 2, a top plan vievv taken along line A-B of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a view in elevation depicting certain elements not disclosed by the aspect of the machine as illustrated by Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a detailed view depicting a section of tubing bent by aid of the machine.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide a table 1 supported by standards 2 and provided at one side With a receptacle 3. Mounted upon this table is a plate A4, the outer edge of which is formed on the arc of a circle and Whose inner edge is peculiarly curved as indicated by dotted line 5 in Fig. 2. Seated upon plate 4 and projecting above table 1 (as best shown in Fig. 3) is a disk 6 grooved as at 7 and locked against movement by bolts 8, which project through said plate and are fastened beneath said table by nuts, not disclosed. Projecting centrally through disk 6 is a shaft 9, carrying adjacent its upper extremity a gear 10 meshing With worm-gear 11 keyed upon shaft 12, the latter being driven by a motor through the agency of a belt and pulley.
Disposed upon the upper surface of disk 6 and loosely encircling shaft 9 is a toothed annular member 13, and disposed thereabove is a clutch 14 having vertical keyvvays formed in its inner surface for the reception of splines 15, the latter Working freely in said keyways, whereby said clutch may be raised and lowered upon shaft 9. Encircling clutch 14 is a yoke 16 secured to a lever Specification of Letters Patent.

SeraI No. 3,517.
17 and provided upon its inner surface With pins 1S which engage a groove 19 formed in the collar of said clutch, one extremity of lever 17 being hingedly connected at 20 With a stationery support 21 and the other end thereof connected to a helical spring 22 suspended from a stationery support 23.
Projecting horizontally from member 13 and rigidly secured thereto is a lever-arm 24 to Whose under surface is fastened a similar arm 25 Which extends inwardly beneath disk 6 and loosely encircles shaft 9, said armsbeing spaced apart to accommodate a roller 26 retained by bolt 27.
From the foregoing description the construction and arrangement of the several elements can be fully understood and the operation of the machine is as follows: A straight section of tubing having been inserted, as shown in Fig. 3, between disk 6 and roller 26, a grooved forming-block 28 is next disposed between said tubing and roller and, this having been accomplished, lever 17 is then depressed by the operator which serves to bring the revolving clutch 14 into engagement With member 13. As soon as the teeth of said clutch and member are in mesh, roller 26 begins to travel over block 28 Which is thus gradually swung around and presses the tubing closely against the groove of disk 6, whereby the angle 29, shown in Fig. 4, is formed. Coincident with the completion of the formation of angle 29, roller 26 rides down the beveled extremity 30 (Fig. 2) of block 28 and, the pressure being thus released, the pull of spring 22 is then sufficient to immediately raise lever 17 and clutch 14, said block dropping simultaneously into receptacle 3. rfhe tubing is then removed, and the other end thereof may be inserted for repetition of the operation above described, the final result in such case being the production of the U-shaped article shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the position of block 28 may be minutely adjusted by loosening nut 31 and manipulating threaded post 32 which is carried in the head of said block and contacts with a stop 33; it Will also be observed that a stop 34 is provided to limit the projection of the tubing Within the machine so that the angle formed in each section thereof Will be disposed at exactly the saine point,
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A machine of the character described comprising a table, a disk rigidly fixed thereon, a groove formed in the periphery of said disk, a toothed Vannular member revolubly mounted upon said disk, a lever projecting laterally from said member, a roller secured to said lever, a block removably disposed between said diskand roller, a groove formed insaid block `disposedopposite the groove of said disk and corresponding tothe size thereof, a revoluble shaft vertically projecting through said member, a toothed clutch slidablyV mounted vupon said shaft Aand revolving in unison therewith, devices for bringing said clutch into engagement with said member, means for automatically releasing said clutch and block, and mechanism for driving said shaft. v
2. A machine of the character described compri-sing a table, adisk rigidly fixed thereon, aY groove formed in thel periphery of vsaid disk, a toothed annular 'member revolubly mounted upon said disk, a lever projecting laterally from said member, a roller secured to said lever, a block removably disposed betvven said .disk and roller, a groove formed in said block disposed opposite the groove off said disk and -corresponding to ythe size thereof, a revoluble shaft vertically projecting through said member, a toothed clutch slidablynounted upon said shaft and revolving in unison therewith, devices for *bringing said clutch into engagement Wifth saidimember, means for adjusting the lposition of saidblock, means for automatically releasing said clutch and block, and mechanism for driving said shaft.
A3. A machine lof the character described comprising a table,a disk rigidly xed thereon, a groove formed in .the periphery Vof said disk, a toothed annular member revolubly mounted :on said disk, an arm projecting laterally from said member, a roller secured to said arm, a block removably disposed between said disk and roller, a groove formed in said block disposed opposite the groove ofsaid disk and corresponding to the size thereof, .a revoluble shaft vertically prof `anism for driving said shaft.
t. A machine of the character described comprising a table, a disk rigidly fixed thereon, a groove formed in the periphery of said disk, a toothed annular member revolubly mounted upon Asaid diskr` an arm projecting laterally from said member, a roller secured to said arm, a block removably disposed between said disk and roller, a stop disposed in the path of said block, a threaded post adjustably fixed in the head of said block adapted to contact with said stop, a groove formed in said block disposed opposite the `grove of said disk and corresponding to the size thereof, a revoluble shaft vertically projecting through said member, a toothed `clutch slidably mounted upon said shaft and revolving in unison therewith, a groove extendingl around the collar of said clutch, a lever hingedly supported adjacent to and encircling said clutch, pins carried by said lever projecting Within the groove of said collar, a. spring connected with said lever `adapted to normally retain said clutch out of engagement with said member, and mechanism for driving said shaft.
