To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, FREDERICK H. KUT- NEWSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malden, in the county of lVhitman and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Twine- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to twine holders and its objects are to provide a novel and improved construction, particularly improved, first, with respect to the provision of means to clasp the twine cord or equivalent, tensioned so as to securely grip the twine and to automatically yield upon the passage of uneven portions or knots therethrough, and second, with respect to means for moving and maintaining the free end of the twine elevated as above a counter and conveniently positioned, so as to be away from and out of interference with adjacent articles.

The present and preferred embodiment of the invention is hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate like or corre sponding parts, 1 is a base adapted to or be supported from a counter or other proper object. The'twinc 2 is wrapped around a stationary hub as at 3, mounted on the base 1. Also supported from the base is a suitable bracket shown having integral angle arms, 41 and 5, respectively mounted horizontally and vertically. As a means of fastening the bracket to the base, the same is provided with screw threads at 6 and 7. The lower portion of arm 5 passes removably through an opening in the base and at the threads 6, a nut, 8, engages the arm 5, said nut resting on the top face of the base. At threads 7, a clamp nut 9 engages, being tightly clamped against the base and entering a recess as shown. Arm 1 has extending therefrom an angle arm 10, preferably square or otherwise shaped in cross section as to slidably mount thereon clasp plates 11, forming part of a tension clasp means employed for the twine or cord, the latter pass- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing yieldingly between the plates. On arm 10, a spring 12 is mounted so as to bear against the plates to urge them into contact and to bear against a nut 13, mounted on screw threads 142 of the arm, serving to fasten in position the parts of the clasp device.

After passing through the plates the cord passes through a guide member shown as an eyelet 15, carried by a Weight member 16, slidably mounted on arm 5 and thence through a guide member shown as an eyelet 17, secured adjacent to the top of arm 5. Upon pulling the cord at its free end the same passes through the eyelets 15 and 17 tightening the cord and raising the weight 16, on the vertically disposed arm 5, thereupon, upon further pulling of the cord, it unwinds from hub 8, passes through the plates and over the arm 10 against the tension of spring 12, and thence through the eyelets 15 and 17 until the proper length has been secured, whereupon the desired length is severed adjacent the base 1. Thereafter the weight 16 falls to its lowermost position thereby raising the free end of the cord to a convenient position above the counter or support, so that it will not interfere with articles that may be adjacent to base. It is clear that the plates 11, will automatically yield upon the passage of knots or uneven portions of the cord passing between them.

Inasmuch as merely the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, changes such as fall within the spirit and scope of the invention are reserved.
