Be it known that l, CHARLES 1V. Horr- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sausage-Stuer, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention consists of a novel sausage stuner, wherein novel means are provided forcausing the sausage or other material to pass into a skin, bag or other receptacle, under any desired or predetermined pressure.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, 1 have shown herein a preferred embodiment thereof, which in practice will give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is of course to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged andorganized, and that my invention is no t V.limited to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities, as herein set forth.

Each feed blade or paddle 32 is provided with a stem 33, which passes through the annulus 20, and has its inner end journaled in a hub 3,4, which is fixed to the sleeve 8, b y means of a key 3.5, whereby said hub and said sleeve r0- tate in unison. For convenience of illustral tion, l. have shown the annulus 20 as pro vided with apertures 36 through which said stems 33 extend, but it is within the scope of my invention to. form the annulus 20 in separate parts instead of in one part.
37 designates a shoe which is apertured as at 38, in order to permit a stem 33 to pass therethrough, said shoe being fixed to its respective stein, inthe present instance, by means of a pin 39, although if desired this shoe may be cast integral with the stem 33 and its, blade 32. Each shoe 37 is provided with an upwardly extending portion`40, preferably having a rectangular contour, and said shoe is also provided with a laterally projecting portion 41, which is also preferably of a rectangular contour. The adjusting screw 53 and the spring` 5G, and their adjuncts, form an adjustable tension device for the valve member 51, and thereby regulate the pressure under which the material passes through the delivery spout 45 into the skin or casing which is being lilled.

The operation of my novel sausage stuifer will now be. readily apparent to those skilled in this art, and is as follows: rlhe sausage or other material which is to be packed into the, skin or casing, is placed in the hopper 12 and the driving shaft 2 is actuated in any desired manner, and owing to the construction and arrangement of the gears 4, 5, and 7, the mixing or agitating blade 61 will be revolved in one direction, while the feed blades 3,2 will be revolved in a reverse direction. rif'he material feeds down between the blades 32, as will be understood by reference to. Fig. 2, so that the. material is fed through the lchannel 28, beneath the plate 23.` 'A slide or shoe. 37, has one of its operative faces, such as for example the lug orv extension 41, positioned to travel between the tracks 13, and 29, which will cause the feed blades 32 to assume a vertical position during their revolution, but as soon as the lug 41 reaches the beveled or inclined end 14 of the .track 13, the lug 40 passes up the incline space 16 on to the track 15, thereby bringing a feed blade at such time into a fnibstantially horizontal position. The material, such as for example the sausage, passes out the stationary discharge spout or opening 42, and through the removable discharge spout or opening 45, and into the skin or casing, which is to receive the sausage. This action is caused by the curved face of the block 47, so that the sausage or other material is guided into said Yopening 4:2. It will be noted that the top wall or face of the block 47, is at such a height that when a feed blade is passing vthereover in a horizontal position it will travel in close proximity to such wall, so that one face of the blade will be freed of any sausage or other material adhering thereto. On the further advancement of the feed blade it engages the valve or door 51, causing the same to open against the tension of the spring 56, and since the lower edge of said valve or door 51 is in contact with the upper face of the feed blade 32 passing thereunder, any sausage or material adhering to such face will be removed therefrom.
Special attention is directed to the manner in which'l am enabled to pack the material in the skins or casings under any desired pressure, since the adjusting screw 53' may be regulated to vary the tension of the spring 56, so4 that Aat any predetermined pressure, the valve or door 51 will move toward its open position and permit the sausage or other material to pass therethrough, instead of forcing the same throughthe discharge opening d2. By such construction, l provide a safety or relief valve which prevents the material becoming packed too tightly in the skins or casings, and which prevents the bursting open of the skins or casings during the filling operation, since, as iswell known some skins or casings will stand a much greater pressure than others. As the lug or extension 40 of a shoe 37, passes down the inclined end wall 17 of the track 15, the lug or extension 41 of said shoe will again engage with and be guided by the tracks 13 and 29, asis apparent.
It will be understood that the annulus 20 rotates in unison with the feed blades, and if desired the upper and lower ribs thereon,
` 18 and 21 respectively, and their coperating recesses or grooves may be dispensed with, since their only function is to form a better fit between the bottom of the casing 10 and the top or cover plate 23, so that there is less likelihood of the material passing between said annulus and said casing 10 and said plate 23.
lt will now be evident that in accordance with my present invention, 1 provide feeding or conveyer members which during a portion of their revolution travel in an upright position, and which when they arrive in proximity to the discharge opening, are automatically partially rotated, in conjunction with novel means for regulating the pressure on the material, so that such material may be passed into a container of any desired type, at a desired pressure, and I also provide novel means for removing from a feed blade any material which` adheres' It will now be apparent that have de` vised arnovel and useful construction of a sausage stuffer which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable-1n the statement of the invention and the above de-V scription, and while 1 have, in the present instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results', it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character' stated, a casing having a discharge port therefrom, feed blades mounted to revolve within said casing, means to'impart a partial rotation to said blades during their travel, and means to revolve said blades.
2.1n a device of the character stated, a vcasing having a discharge port therefrom, devices within said casing to form a feed channel communicating with said discharge during other periods, in a path at an angle` to their upright position.
4. In a device of the character stated, a casing having a discharge port, devices to form a feed channel communicating with said discharge port, said devices including a valve in said channel located beyond said discharge port to vary the pressure under which the material passes through said discharge port by permitting a portion of said material to return to said feed channel, and means tofeed the material in said casing through said channeland said discharge port.
5. ln a device of the character stated, a casing having a discharge port, means to feed the materialin said casing to said discharge port, and devices including a valve located beyond said discharge port to cause eov said material to pass through said discharge port, under a predetermined pressure by permitting a portion of said material to feed into said casing beyond said discharge port.
6. In a device of the character stated, a casing having a discharge port, an annulus within said casing forming a feed channel, feed blades mounted in said annulus, a cover for a portion of said channel, means to rotate said feed blades, shoes carried by said feed blades, and means common to said cover and said casing, and copcrating with said shoes to vary the position of said feed blades during their rotation.
7. ln a device of the character stated, a casing having a discharge port, devices to form an annular channel communicating with said discharge port, a spring actuated' valve forming a closure for said channel at a point posterior to said discharge port, whereby when said valve is open, the material will be returned to said channel, and means to feed the material within said casing into said channel.
8. ln a device of the character stated, a casing having a discharge port, an annulus within said casing forming a feed channel, a plate covering a portion of said annulus, a block in said channel in proximity to said discharge port and partially filling said channel, a valve closing the forward end of said channel, a feed blade, means to move said feed blade through said channel, and means to turn said blade to permit it to pass between said valve and said block.
9. ln a device of thecharacter stated, a casing having a discharge port, means within said casing to form a feed channel'in communication with said discharge port, a
valve forming a closure for the forward end of said channel and when open permitting the return of material to said feed channel, a tension device for said valve, means to adjust said tension device, and means to feed material into said channel.
l0. ln a device of the character stated, a casing having a discharge port, devices forming a channel in communication with said discharge port, a spring pressed valve closing the forward end of said channel, a plurality of tracks common to said devices and said casing, a feed blade mounted to travel through said channel, means to cause such travel of said feed blade, and a shoe carried by said feed blade and having operative faces coperating with said tracks to periodically turn said blade toward a horizontal plane.
ll. ln a device of the character stated, a casing having a plate spaced from its bottom forming an annular feed channel, and said plate being provided with an opening communicating with said feed channel, said casing having a discharge port communicating with said channel, means in proximity to said discharge port to direct the material thereinto, a valve pivotally mounted and having its lower-end normally engaging said means to close said channel at one point and when open permitting the material to return to said feed channel, afeed blade mounted to tra-vel in said channel, means to revolve said blade, and means to automatically impart a partial rotation to said blade during its revolution. v
