- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON M. BAKER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in guards for use on ophthalmic mountings, and has particular reference to an improved construction of guard, and further an 1m proved method or process of securing the facing to the guard.
The leading object of my inventionis the provision of an improved form of guard which may be so constructed. as to eliminate the use of metal rivets, or the like, in scour.-
serve to prevent any metal from coming into contact with the face of the wearer.
A further object of my invention is the provision of an improved manner of' securing together or connecting the back plate and facing therefor so that the facing will'be securely butsimply attached without the use of separate attaching devices.
Other objects and advantages of my improved construction of guard and facing therefor should be readily apparent by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings', and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction. shown and described, or the specific steps in the securing of the 'facing to the back plate, within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.

In the drawings, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates the-bridge of a mounting supporting the usual'leuses 2, and provided with suitable guards for retaining the mounting 111 correct position upon the face of the wearer. These guards I preferably form of a back plate 3 of metal or like maformed therein.
Previous to my invention when it has terial, havin one or more apertures 4 been desired to place on the face of a inetallic guard a facing or contacting portion 5 of zylonlte shell or the like, has been necessary to make a special construction of blade 8, and provide thesame with perforations to receive securing rivets. With my nvent on, however, this necessity for a speclal construction of guardis done away with, in that I am able to satisfactorily secure the facing 5 to the blade 3 without'the use of said rivets and without in anywise varying the structure of the blade itself. This result I attain by forming the facing 5 with a portion 6 projecting through the aperture 4 in the blade and with the expanded, headed or flaring portion 7 which engages the rear face of the blade 3 and thus serves to securely retain the facing 5 in position, as is clearly illustrated in the several views of the drawing.
In that form of my invention illustrated in Figs, II and III, I have shown the guard blade '3 provided with two apertures, in Fig. II the material being continuous over the entire face of the blade, and in Fig. III.

In Fig. V, I have shown a section taken at right anglesto the view in Fig. IV, showing a slight modification of construction, in that in this instance the material in place of being sunkened in the center to provide the flesh receiving recess 8 illustrated in Fig. IV, the facing is slightly rounded and provided with corrugations to prevent slipping thereof.
In Fig. VI, I have illustrated a form particularly adapted for use as a holding pad, in that the blade portion 3 consists merely of a small ring, the facing material fitting within the aperture 4 of the ring, and also .curving slightly over the edge thereof to then laterally deflected or expanded to bear against the rear face of the blade and thus retain the same in position.

In securing;- the pad in position I preferably subject the same to sutlicient heat to satisfactorily soften the facing and then press the same against the blade, when a portion will be forced therethrough, it then being merely necessary to head or flatten out said rearwardly projectiug'portion to permanently unite the parts.
If preferred, the facing 5 may be suitably prepared before the heating for placing in position. That is to say, it may be shaped to desired configuration and rounded or indented, as indicated in the several Views, and formed with a tang or rivet like portion on the rear face thereof, in this event it being nierely necessary to press the tang through the aperture formed in the blade and to then, either from softening from previous wearer) ing in forming a blank with an aperture,
heating a facing therefor, forcing a portion of the facing While heated through the aperture, and laterally deflecting portions of the faeing to secure it in position.
2. The process of facing a guard blade consisting in forming an aperture in the blade,
pressing a portion of the facing through the aperture heating the portion projecting through the aperture and spreading the portion so passed through the aperture While under the influence of heat to prevent its Withdrawal when cooled.
