Be it known that I, Joan F. OCormon, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Side Bearings for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a. full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a. part of this specifics tiori.
My invention relates to improvements in side bearings for railway cars.
The object of my invention is provide a durable and efiicient side hearing or railwev cars.
In the drawings I have illustrated my invention as embodied in a, side bearing ap plied to a passenger car.
' In the drawings-Figure 1 is an end elevetion of a body bolster and a truck bolster with the side bearing applied thereto enibodying my invention; Fig. 2 is s plan view of the side bearings; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a low gitudinal section taken on line iof F 1g. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 5, 5 represent body bolsters connected by the body side bearing bridge 6.
The numeral 7 represents a. truck side bearing bridge. A. bearing plate 8 is mounted upon one of said bridges, preferably the body side bearing bridge 6. A bearing 9 comprises a base castin 10, a cradle 11, a roll 12 and an axle 13. he base casting 10 is in general shape a hollow sphere truncatod above its horizontal axis, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. At its base it is provided with spaced apart downwardly extended flanges 14, 14% adapted to on age the sides of the side bearing bridge to w ich it is attached by suitable means, preferably the rivets 15, 15 passing through said bridge and thofiang'es 14. At either end of the recess 16 formed between the flanges 14 the base casting is provided with outwardly. e."- tended shoulders 17, each of said shoulders beim adapted to rest upon the up er face 18 o? the sideibearing brid e to w iich the bearin is applied. The hol ow base casting is pre erebly constructed with a comparetively short, straight, internal trace at either end, as indicated at the numerals 19, 19 in Fig. 2 of the drawings, to prevent the rotetion of the cradle 11 in a horizontal plane therein.
The cradle 11 is of a general circular with the curvature ol the internal adjacent faces of the base casting, the ends 21, 21 of said cradle being preferably straight, how ever, to conform to the adjacent internal end faces 19, 19 of the base casting. The cradle 11 is provided with a substantially central vertical openin 22 adapted to receive the roller 12. At either side the cradle is provided with a perforation 23 within which. the ends of the axle 1.3 are received, the said axle being extended transversely of the side bearing bridge and passing through the perforation 24 provided in the roller 12. At either end the perforation 24 in said roller receives a bushing 25, which in pref erable construction is cast integral with the roller 12. The bushings 25 are preferably of comparatively soft metal, and the axle 13 is preferably hardened.
The hollow in the base casting within which the cradle and roller are received is designated by the numeral 26. The opening 27 at the upper side of'the base casting is of lesser width than the diameter of the hollow 26 so that when the cradle is mounted Within the base casting it cannot be removed except through rotating the cradle until one end of the some is within the openin 27, whereupon the crii dle may be Withdrawn. The hollow 26 in the base casting is provided with a plurality of drain holes 28, 28 to permit the discharge of any foreign material that may enter the hollow 26..
In assembling the parts of the bearing the roller 12 is placed in the opening 22 in the cradle 11, and the axle 13 inserted through one of the perforations 23 in the cradle and through the roller 12 until the axle is in. its proper position, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the dra-win s, whereupon one end of the cradle is inserts in the hollow 26 in the base, casting 10, and rotated therein to a. horizontal posi tion. The base casting is then mounted upon one of the side bearing bridges, the brid e passing through the recess 16 between the an es 14 and entering the lower por tion of t e hollow 26, forming at either edge a shoulder 29 to limit the rotary movement of the cradle sufiiciently to prevent either end thereof from rotating into' the opening 27 in the base casting. The roller 12 is adapted to be engaged by the bearing plate 8.
It will be observed that the cradle 11 is in sliding en agement with the base casting 10 in the hollow 26 thereof, and adapted to automatically adjust itself in relation to the bearing plate 8 when the same engages the roller 12.
I claim 1. In a side bearing for railway cars, a bearing member comprising a hollow spherical casting, a slidable cradle mounted therein, and a roller mounted in the cradle.
2. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination, an open hollow base casting, a cradle rotatably mounted therein, an axle passing through the cradle, a roller mounted on said axle, the opening in the base casting being of a lesser width than the diameter of the hollow therein, the cradle being removable when one side thereof is rotated into the said opening in the base casting and held in position when the sides of the cradle are arranged below said opening.
3. In a side bearing for railway cars, an open hollow base casting, a rotatable cradle therein, a roller and an axle therefor, the cradle having an opening to receive the roller, the cradle having perforations at the sides of said opening to receive the axle, the opening in the base casting being of lesser width than the diameter of the hollow, the cradle being removable when one side thereof is rotated into the opening of the base casting and held in working position when the sides are moved to positions out of alinement with said opening.
4. In a railway car, in combination, a side bearing, brid e, a hollow base casting, a cradle rotata ly mounted therein, and a roller mounted in the cradle, the bridge passing through the hollow portion of the base casting and forming shoulders to limit the rotation of the cradle.
5. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination, 'a base casting having a substantially spherical hollow portion with an opening therefrom of lesser width than the diameter of the hollow portion, a cradle rotatably mounted in the base casting and in sliding engagement therewith, a roller mounted in the cradle, and means to limit the rotation of the cradle.
6. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination, a base castinghaving a substantially spherical hollow portion with an opening therefrom of lesser width than the diameter of the hollow portion, a cradle rotatably mountedin the base casting and in sliding engagement therewith, a roller mounted in the cradle, and shoulders in the hollow portion to limit the rotation of the cradle.
7. In a side bearing for railway cars, in combination, a base casting having a substantially spherical hollow portion with an opening therefrom the diameter of the hollow portion, a cradle rotatably mounted in the base casting and in sliding engagement therewith, a roller mounted in the cradle, and removable shoul ders in the hollow portion of the base cast ing to limit the rotation of the cradle.
8. In aside bearing for railway cars, in combination, a base casting having a sub- -stantially spherical hollow portion with an opening therefrom of lesser width than the diameter of the hollow portion, a cradle rotatably mounted in the base casting and in sliding engagement therewith, a roller mounted in the cradle, removable means to limit the rotation of the cradle, and means to limit the rotation thereof to the vertical plane of the axis of the roll.
' 9. In a side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a hollow base casting, of a cradle mounted therein, said casting and cradle having cooperating curved faces permitting slidable movement between the parts, and means for permitting removal of the cradle from the casting upon rotation of the cradle to a position substantially at right angles to its normal operative position.
10. In a ,side bearing for railway cars, the combination with a base castin having a hollow portion provided with sp erical surfaces, of a roller carrying cradle havin spherical ends mounted insaid, casting an bodily movable with respect thereto about a.
