T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that CHARLES H. FARMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Amalgamators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to amalgamators and ore washers, and its object is to provide a simple, reliable and eicient type of apparatus adapted for amalgamating and saving flowered Quicksilver and fine and rusty gold, and which is designed to take the place of mill amalgamating plates.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus which may be used as a placer mining washer, for the concentration of gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead and other ores, and as a settler in the separation of all minerals.
rl`he invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanving drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of an amalgamator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the pan. F ig. 4 is a vertical section through the pan and nozzle. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the actuating crank and its bearing.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates a suitable frame structure including a floor or platform 2, arranged at a suitable elevation therein, which frame or platform may be inclosed to provide a casing or housing having a door which may be locked when the appa.- ratus is in operation, if desired.
Arranged in the space between the top of the frame and the platform 2 is an amalgamating, concentrating or separating pan 3 having a flat circular bottom 4 and a sloping side wall 5, preferablyT inclined at an angle of about 30o, and secured to a carrier ring 6. In practice the pan body may be made of copper plated with silver, and may be of any size suitable for the purpose for which it is designed. The ring 6 is provided with apertured lugs or eyes 7 engaged by the hooked lower ends 8 of a series of link rods 9, which rods have hooks or eyes 10 at their upper Specification of Letters Patent.

ends engaging eye-bolts 11 fixed to the top bars of the frame, whereby the pan is mounted to have freedom of swinging motion in all directions as well as an oscillatory motion about its axis.
Secured to the rim 6 are the radial arms of a spider 12 which are welded or otherwise united below the center of the pan to form a bearing 13. This bearing 13 is loosely engaged by a crank pin 14 carried by a crank arm 15 fixed to the upper end of a vertical power transmitting shaft 16 journaled in a bearing 17 secured to the platform 2, said shaft extending through thebearing and above and below the platform. The shaft 16 revolves at a desired rate of speed and in its operation the crank pin in its orbit of movement imparts a swinging motion in all directions to the pan, by which an efficient amalgamating, washing or separating action on the contents of the pan is effected. The lower end of the pin is adjustable in a longitudinal slot 1S in the crank and provided with a shoulder 19 and a threaded terminal carrying a washer 2O and clamping nut 21 whereby it may be secured in position, such adjustment permitting the throw of the crank to be varied to regulate the degree of swinging motion of the pan as required.
The lower end of the shaft 16 carries a bevel" gear 22 meshing with a. similar gear 23 on a horizontal drive shaft 21, said drive shaft being mounted in a bearing 25 and provided with a cone pulley 26 whereby variable speed motion may be communicated thereto from a drive belt operated from any suitable source of power.
For the use of the device in washing ore, etc., I provide above the pan 3 a water supply pipe 27 terminating at its lower end in a discharge nozzle. The said lower end of the pipe is curved downwardly to a vertical position and provided with lateral outlets 28 and a bottom deflector 29 to arrest the flow of the water and cause it to discharge through said outlets. Secured to and surrounding the apertured end of the pipe is an annular deliector 30 which prevents splashing of the water and directs the discharging streams of water downward against a dished spreader plate 31 supported by strips 32, said plate being of greater diameter than the Which an eficient supplyofthe VWater .to the pan is provided for;

In concentrating and amalgamating, the pan is coated with quicksilver in the usual Way and the pulp supplied thereto, whereby during the gyratory and up and down motions imparted thereto causes the contents to be spread over the surfacethereof and rolled over and over, thus causing thorough amalgamation and the separation from the air and collection of even the inestflower gold and other precious metals.
It will be seenfrom the foregoing vconstruction that an apparatus is provided in Which-the pan is mounted so as to be moved freely 'in all directions for an eiiicient amalgamating, concentrating, Washing or separating action, 'whereby the' apparatus is adapted -for the various uses set forth.
