Be it known that I, MARTIN M. BoRnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Black Earth, in the county of Dane and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to gate operating mechanisms designed for the purpose of causing the opening and closing movement of a gate from a distance, primarily to permit the passage through the gate of vehicles without necessitating the alighting of the operator from said vehicle.
The invention consists in the provision of a rotatable member connected to the gate and operating means for imparting rotary movement thereto to swing the gate on its pivot, a locking bar carried by said gate being so disposed to be tripped upon the commencement of rotation of the rotatable member aforesaid whereby to free the gate for such swinging movement.
An object of my device lies in the provision of a locking means adapted to automatically engage the gate when swung into open position whereby to hold the same until the vehicle passes therethrough and which means is operable through the coiiperation of the operating means for swinging said gate to release the said locking means upon the preparatory closing movement.
A still further obj eot of my invention resides in the provision of an operating member for the gate having a shiftable journal to permit the disposition of said member at inclination without interfering with the operative connection with the rotatable mem ber hereinbefore mentioned.
With the above and other objects in View, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, wherein;

Throughout the following detail description, and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Specifically describing my invention, and rererring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a gate of any desired construction and conformation and comprising the end bar 2 which constitutes its pivot, being journaled in the lower bearing 3 and the upper hearing f secured to the usual gate post 5. The bar 2 extends upwardly beyond the top of the post 5 and has mounted thereon somewhat loosely near the upper extremity a rotatable member or gear 6, such mounting permitting a slight rotation of the gear member initially to the rotation of the gate thereby, serving a particular purpose, as will be hereinafter more specifically pointed out. This loose connection is obtained by forming the central aperture of the gear 6 with an inwardly projecting lug which is seated in recess formed in the end bar 2 which recess is suiliciently large to permit the lug free movement therein a proper distance in either direction before positive engagement of thelug with the end bar to cause movement of the latter with the gear. Secured to the upper portion of the gate post 5 and extending upwardly are a pair of curved brackets for support, 7, 7 connected at their uppermost extremities to the end of the bar 2, and it will be readily understood that said brackets may consist of separate and independent members or be formed from a single strap or bar shaped and cooperating with the post and end bar of the gate, as shown best in Fig. l of the drawmgs.
The peripheral portion of the under surface of the rotatable member 6 is toothed and has meshing therewith a pinion 8 carried by the extremity of the operating rod 9 which extends away from the gate post at the side of the roadway for a suitable distance to the post 10 on which it is journaled in the bracket 11, said rod having a crank 12 at this end of the same for imparting rotation to said rod. The rod 9 is journa'led at the inner end in the sliding bearing 13 mounted on the curved bracket 7 and the adjustment of this bearing upon said bracket enables the disposition of the rod at an incline so as to conform to the pitch of the roadway leading to the gate if the same is not on alevel. For this reason to enable such adjustment the pinion 8 having rounded or curved teeth is employed so as to maintain proper gearing relation with the large gear 6 on the end bar of the gate.
Pivotally secured to the gate 1 at 14: is a locking bar 15 curving upwardly from the swinging end and terminating adjacent to the rotatable member 6 and the end of said bar is adapted to cooperate with a cam or lug 16 on the under surface of the rotatable member, as most clearly seen by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings, in the operation of swinging the gate, as will be more clearly understood as this description proceeds. The lower free end of the bar 15 engages with a notched locking member 17 secured to the opposing gate post 2 when the gate is closed.
As it is necessary to provide operating means for the gate so that the same may be closed after passing therethrough, an operating rod 9 similar in construction and disposition to the rod 9, is provided so as to extend beyond the opposite side of the gate post 5, said rod having a crank 12 at one end and the pinion 8 at its other end for operating the gear 6.
In the use of the invention it will be understood from the foregoing that rotation of therod 9 by the crank 12 will rotate the member 6, the initial rotation of which, prior to moving the gate brings the cam 16 into contact with the end of the locking bar 15, and pivotal movement of this member frees the gate to swing on its pivot under further actuation or rotation of the gear 6, until it abuts with the stopping post 18 and this post carries a locking dog or catch 19 pivotally secured thereto, a lower hook terminal of which automatically engages over the upper horizontal bar 20 of the gate 1. After passing through the gate, the operator rotates the rod 9 by the crank 12*, the initial rotation of which rod causes the engagement of an arm 21 extending at right angles therefrom with an offstanding arm 22 projecting from the upper end of the locking catch 19, thereby raising the locking hook from engagement with the gate and permitting it to swing under further rotation of the rod 9 through the instrumentality of the gear 6 until the closed position is reached. The locking bar 15 being pivoted at one side of its center automatically engages the latch member 17 to maintain the gate in closed position.
In order that the gate may be moved on its pivot in a direction away from the operator irrespective of the side from which he approaches, the upper terminal of th locking bar 15 is formed or provided with spaced. adjustable plates 23. straddling the end bar 2 of the gate, the function of which is to enable the depression of the locking bar 15 by contact of one of the earns 16 with its adjacent plate according to which direction the operator rotates the operating rod. These plates are pivoted at 23 and formed with a slot 23 through which extends an adjusting bolt 23. and obviously they control the extent of'depression of the locking rod or bar 15. Thus the gate may be opened always away from the operator or toward him at will.
In order to admit of operating the gate from the top of a load, I provide a post 10 of suitable height and near the top of the same a crank 12 connected to a short shaft 9 which is operatively connected to the lower rod 9 by the sprocket chain 24 or any other suitable operating connections may be provided for this purpose within the purview of my invention.
It is obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts as hereinbefore described without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is r r 1. Ina device of the class described, the combination with a gate, of a rotatable member connected to said gate, means for operating said member for swinging the gate, a cam on said rotatable member, a locking bar for locking said gate against movement, an adjustable contact terminal carried by said bar and adapted to cooperate with the cam aforesaid, and'means intermediate the adjustable terminal and the bar for regulating the extent of movement imparted to said bar by said cam. V
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a gate, of a rotatable member connected to said gate, means for operating said member to swing the gate, a lock ing bar for said gate, an adjustable forked terminal on said bar arranged contiguous to the rotatable member, and a cam projecting from said rotatable member adjacent to each fork extremity for cooperation with the terminal to disengage the locking bar upon rotation of the rotatable member in either direction.
. 3. A gate operating mechanism of the class described comprising in combination with a pivoted gate, a rotatable member connected therewith for swinging the gate on its pivot, an operating rod operatively connected with the rotatable member, supporting means for said rod, a shiftable bearing connected with said supporting means in which said rod is j ournaled whereby to dispose the rod at different inclinations, and a gear member carried by said rod engageable with the rotatable member irrespective of the inclination of the rod.
4. A gate operating mechanism of the class described comprising in combination with a pivoted gate, a rotatable member connected therewith, an operating rod, a gear member thereon operatively connecting the rod with the rotatable member, a curved bracket for supporting said rod, and a shiftable bearing connected with said bracket in which said rod is journaled adapted to maintain connection of the gear member with the rotatable member when the rod is disposed at different inclinations.
5. In mechanism of the class described, the combination with a pivoted gate, a gear Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the member connected to said gate for swinging the same on its pivot, an operating rod for actuating the rotatable member to swing the gate into open position, a stop post against which said gate abuts to limit its swinging movement, an arm carried by the operating rod aforesaid adjacent the post, and a latch member on said post adapted to automatically engage the gate when swung against said post, said latch member being operable by the arm on the operating rod upon operation of said rod to disengage the latch and permit the gate to be swung into closed position.
