Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, MICHAEL A. BURKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingman, in the county of Mohave and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in supports and more particularly to a device for supporting a candle or other lighting means, the object of the invention being to provide a supporting device of this character which is particularly adapted for use by miners and is to be carried in the mine and can be supported in any desirable place by engaging the same with any suitable object.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a supporting member which is provided with means adapted for engagement with various forms of objects to support the device in its operative position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a support of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved candle supporter; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the handle member; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the removable supporting arm; Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of the hook member; Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view ofthe candle retaining thimble; Fig. 8 is a plan view illustrating the application of my improved carbid lamp holder; and Fig. 9 is a transverse sectional view of the lamp holder.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the elongated body mem ber of my improved support at one end of which is formed a handle 2, the other end thereof being tapered into a point, as shown at 3, and adapted for engagement within the earth of the mine or in any wooden support, it being understood that the pointed end of the shank 3 is suificiently sharp that the same will readily penetrate into any wooden object. Formed integral with the body 1 is a substantially circular enlarged portion a which is provided with a similar shaped socket 5 and extending outwardly from the enlarged portion are the spaced arms 6 which form an elongated recess adapted to communicate with the socket 5. A retaining thimble 7 is provided and is to be formed of any suitable material such as aluminum or the like and comprises a circular body formed from a single blank of material which is preferably elongated in form and rolled up to provide the circular body. One end of the blank extends beyond the other end and is slit to form the outwardly projecting tongue 8, the other portion upon the opposite side of the slit being bent upon itself to form a sleeve 6 adapted for insertion within the socket 5 and thence bent rearwardly to form an arm 7 adapted to be arranged between the spaced arms 6. A transverse pin 8 is inserted through the arms to retain the arm 7 against longitudinal movement and a pin 9 is inserted down through the sleeve 6 and the socket 5, in order to securely retain the thimble 7 in its effective position.
The body member 1 is provided upon the side opposite the enlarged portion 4 with a socket 10 in which is arranged the lower end of a standard 11, the lower end of said standard being provided with a tapering lug 12 which is adapted to be inserted within said socket and having a head 13 formed thereon so as to securely retain the same in position. The upper end of the standard 11 is curved upon itselfv and provided with a suitable curved point let which forms a hook member 15 adapted for engagement with any stationary object to support the body member 1 in an uprightposition. The standard 11 is provided upon its inner side with an outwardly projecting lug 16 in which is formed a suitable opening 17 adapted to receive the lower reduced end 18 of the supporting standard 19. The supporting standard 19 is provided with a frame 20, formed integral with the standard and adapted to receive the standard 11 when in an upright position, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3. The standard 19 is further provided with a set screw 21 which extends through the standard and adapted to engage with the standard 11 to securely retain the standard 19 in position and al o to prevent movement on the part of the same relative to the standard 11.
The preferred form, as described above, is especially adapted for use in supporting candles, but should it be desired to use the well known form of carbid' lamps in use by miners at the present time, I provide an attachment in the form of a ring 22 which is adapted to receive the tapering shank 3 of the body member 1 upon which the same is b y oun ed.- orm nteg w t the sleeve 2st and projecting rearwardly therefrom, is a resilient bar25, the outer end of which is bifurcated and is adapted to receive a lug 26 formed upon the outer face of the standard 11 to securely retain the ring 22 in position upon the shank 3.

The upper portion of the body 27 is provided with an opening 30 encircled by a vertical flange having at its upper end an outstanding flange 31'. A second cover 32 is provided which is in the form of a circular plate supported in spaced relation with the opening 30 by means of the brackets 33 and is provided upon its periphery with the downr ly nding nge v h c preve s the draft from entering the opening 30. It will be readily apparent that while I have shown and described the thirnbles 7 in the present form, they may be formed in any other desired shape and of any suitable material such as aluminum or the like. The rings 22 may also be formed of any light weight material and may be removiibly'attached to the shank 3 in any preferred manner. It will be readily apparent that he cover 27 readily protects the flame of the candle from any strong draft and at the same time protects the same from the dropping of water from the roof of the shaft. It will be seen that the supporting member may be readily placed in position by inserting'the tapering shank 3 into the earth at any desirable point or into any wooden structures which may be at hand, but if there is nothing at hand with which it may be engagedfthe hook member 15 may be used to support the device in an upright position. The device as herein shown and described is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form'of myinvention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from thescopeof the appended claims.

A device of the class described including an elongated body having a handle at one end, a shank at the other end, a ring having a sleeve removably, mounted upon the shank portion, a resilient bar formed integral with the sleeve and having an opening in its outer end, and means carried by the body and adapted for engagement within said opening to retain the sleeve in position upon said shank.
